Animal Kingdom, Boardwalk or Old Key West

Hi Everyone! I am just in the very beginning stages of planning our next Disney trip and would love some opinions! We are thinking of trying to stay in one of the DVC rentals (first time) but are having a hard time deciding on which one because they all seem to have their pros and cons. In my family, there are two adults (my husband and I) and our two little boys (age 3 and 1.5 at the time of the trip). Our last trip was almost 2 years ago when we just had one boy and we stayed at Coronado Springs. I loved the Pepper Market there and was hoping to find something similar at the next resort we stay at. In fact, we used many of our sit down dining options at the Pepper Market instead of going to the Maya Grill. I loved walking around the resort with the stroller but did find that we were really far away from the main building and would have preferred to be closer if possible.

Some things that are important to us are good restaurant options. Our oldest has a dairy allergy and possible gluten intolerance (having him tested). We need a place where the kids will have lots to do on the days we don't go to the parks. We plan to go for 10 days but won't be going to the parks every day. I thought that a beach area or playground would be great, along with fabulous pools too! I would love to be able to walk with the kids in their strollers.

Here are my thoughts on the ones we are deciding on but feel free to let me know if my thinking is off and any other information you might have.
Animal Kingdom (Studio)- I love the fact that it has great restaurants and a wonderful quick service place to eat. We are thinking of just doing the quick service dining plan because of how little our boys are and their short attention spans ;) We went on a Disney trip when my oldest was 11 months and had the sit down dining option and LOVED the restaurants and food but did find that it was a little hard to entertain him while waiting for our food sometimes. We love the rooms themselves (the decor etc). The thing that I don't like is that we will be isolated here just in regards to the fact that we will have to take the bus anywhere we go.

Boardwalk Villas (Studio)- I love the area. The thought of being able to take the boat to Epcot and Hollywood Studios sounds so wonderful! The major drawback for us on this resort is that there doesn't appear to be many restaurant options for Quick Service. Has anyone stayed here and what were your thoughts on the food options. I see that there is a bakery and a pizza counter (both of which may not be options for our little guy). Does anyone know if there is a beach you can access here or a playground?

Old Key West (Studio)- I loved the buildings on this resort and the balconies. The fact that the rooms had two queen beds intriqued me because I was hoping to get bed rails from Disney and have our two boys sleep together. Still unsure about the baby and if he will be ready for that at 1.5. So, there is a chance we might have to have a playpen set up in the room as well. However, two queen beds may also make the room feel smaller? I like the idea of taking a boat to Downtown Disney on some of the days we aren't going to the parks. I liked that it has a beach area and playground. I hear that it is really large (probably like Coronado Springs?) and I worry that our room will be really far removed from the bus stop or the restaurant. Again, it doesn't appear to have great Quick Service dining. However, the sit down restaurant looks to be casual so that could work for us potentially. I read that it might be long waits for the bus. Would it be comparable to the Coronado Springs buses? We never found the wait horribly long but had nothing to compare to it either ;)

Thank you so much for any information you might have!

I love the boardwalk. It has a decent pool and is a great location. Im not sure about play areas, my kids are past that stage and I dont recall seeing one anywhere. As far as quick service dining goes there is no where better to stay, don't forget you are a few minutes walk from all of World showcase in Epcot and all of the restaurants there, also Yacht and Beach, Swan and Dolphin.
Old Key West has a good pool area. The resort is very spread out, the buses stop in 4 different locations, so you could be a bus ride away from the Hospitality house and main pool. Do not underestimate the extra space in the rooms at OKW. We stayed there last time (and hopefully again this October) and couldn't believe how much bigger the rooms are compared to Boardwalk.

Boardwalk is very nice (although that clown in the pool would scare my little one!), but you might consider the Beach Club Villas as well. We're staying there in June with our 2 kids, and the pool and beach are incredible. It's also the closest to World Showcase, and if you have park hoppers you can walk into Epcot to try any of those great QS restaurants.

We've stayed at AKL, and the dining is great - their QS is one of the best on property in my opinion, but if you're going to spend time at the resort, I personally would pick one of the Epcot area resorts.

Old key west is great too. Have stayed there twice and it's a nice little get away. However depending on where you are located could put you away from the main pool, and main house.

This July will be our 4th stay at the boardwalk. Love the buildings, area, and the walking distance to Epcot and Hollywood studios. As well as being around Swan dolphin beach and yacht club for me just puts me right in the middle of the magic.

The easiest resort that meets all your needs- animal kingdom lodge

The most affordable and most practical- old key west

The coolest, most fun, most interesting resort- boardwalk

True, boardwalk doesn't have a cafeteria style counter service. It does, however, have a lot of options close by that will get the job done.

I think BW is an excellent choice if you weren't interested in BC. I haven't stayed at BW yet, but did 8 days at BC last summer and the entire Epcot resort area is awesome... BC has a a great pool and your little ones will love the sandy shallow area if you decide to stay there. I think if your kids were older AKL would be a great choice for your family and the restaurants and service at that resort are really second to none. I don't know anything about OKW, but it looks like a nice sprawling resort and I heard Olivia's was good for dining and I think you can take the boat into DTD from there. If you aren't interested in BC I would select BW to be in the Epcot area because it would give you lots of options.

We have stayed at AKL I think three times, and love it! We stayed at the Boardwalk once and it was nice but I would not necessarily want to stay there again unless I got a great deal! We have never stayed at Old Key West. AKL is a favorite - we love seeing the animals and at night you can borrow the night vision glasses to see the animals! They also have a story telling session every evening. Love the restaurants at AKL - the food court one (forget the name) was delicious as is Boma! Boma was great for breakfast and Dinner! My kids who are not little kids anymore have to have Mickey Waffles everyday - but they did not have them at the Boardwalk - we went over to the Beach club to a character breakfast and had them there. I love the African style rooms at AKL and the rooms were nice at the Boarkdwalk, I just prefer AKL. The buses were quick at AKL and Boarkwalk seemed a little slower, it was nice to be so close to Epcot and the boat also takes you to Disney Studios.

People always say that AKL is "so far" from everything, but it isn't. It's like two minutes from CSR, where you already stayed. Take the reports of being "so far away" with a grain of salt. It's a beautiful hotel. But they do use busses and not boats.

OKW is a wonderful place to stay, but you're very correct in thinking that you could be a loong walk (especially with little ones) from the main building.

One of my "issues" with BWI is food. A lot of people think the food options are fine, but I find them lacking. You can walk to Epcot, but it will be 20-30 minutes to the restaurant. You can take boat rides, though, instead of busses, unlike at AKL.

I like AKL, OKW and BWI. And I like them in that order...but that's me. It sounds like AKL might be the best fit, followed by BWI. If long walks to the main area are out of the question, I would scrap OKW.

I can't really offer advice on which you should pick. It winds like you have done your research and have a good handle on these places and just have to make a decision.

Good luck!

Thanks so much, everyone! It looks like BW is not available anyway so we will be staying at AKL! I am actually really excited about it now. I agree with Luv who mentioned that it could take 20-30 min to get to the food places at Epcot. I think that will be a great location when the kids are a little older but they are at a stage that when they are hungry they want their food fast ;) And the room looks great at AKL. I am sure any place would be amazing though! Thank you all again for all of your helpful information!!!

I have only stayed at AKL out of the three, we rented a DVC studio and the room was very nice, loved it. Just to let you know, there is no dedicated QS location at AKL Kidani Village (unless i completely missed it). The Mara is excellent but you do have to walk over to Jambo house. Depending on where in Kidani your room is, this could be a pretty long walk. Lots of people complain about the bus service at AKL, but ours was not bad!
I've read that AKL has lots of activities for kids to do, like learning about the animals and what not. The pools are also beautiful! Hope you have a fabulous trip!!

Thank you! I did realize this and I'm not sure where our room will be located so it could be a big hike for us. Which is the reason why I am really thinking of getting the sit down dining plan now. Thank you for letting me know though :)

No problem! Our room was pretty much the very last room towards Jambo House, so our walk wasn't too bad. In terms of table service, we ate at Sanaa in Kidani and it was amazing!! I'm not sure how the kids meals are, but we absolutely loved our meals there.

That's great! Do you have children? Did you find the room big enough for all of you? I am sure it will be fine if I can just be organized a little better this time around and make sure I unpack our bags and put clothes in drawers etc. We found our last room at CS a little cramped with all of our bags and the playpen and then two queen beds when we only needed one ;)
