Has anyone done the African Safari Trek? I believe you get to go across rope bridges, hike on dirt trails, and eat some food depending on what time of day it is. I’m asking because my family is debating doing this when we go in June. Please share your experience with it if you’ve done it. Thanks!

Sounds like you are talking about Wild Africa Trek. My family has done it twice now, one of those being in June a couple of years ago and then this past February. We love it. It’s 3 hours, immersive, and wonderful for animal lovers. They used to have a discount if you did an afternoon tour in June. We did an 11:45 to get discount and it was perfect. Check the menus, as they offer different food for am and pm times. Included in the tour is a photopass of your experience too. They took over 250 pics each time of the entire experience and will also take pictures of anything you want, think a tiny lizard crawling up the safari truck. If you do it, hope you have fun!

Wild Africa Trek. My son and I have done it twice. It's amazing.

I recommend doing the first Trek of the morning. No discounts, but you have much better odds of seeing more animal activity. No guarantees though. Our last trek we had the lion up prowling the Kope and roaring a lot! The guides took tons of pics and said they'd never seen him that active. Other animals were also more active. They tend to slow down and rest the hotter it gets during the day.

Here's a few shots from our 2011 trek:

We had over 200 unique photos from this trek, it was back when they sent you a CD. Now they give you a webpage where you can download the pics they took once you're home.

If children are in your group, tell them the ages. These tickets are not like park tickets where 10 and up are considered adults. There’s also pass holder and DVC discounts too.

Question... when making your trek, are you in the same enclosed area as the animals? Or are all of them still behind fences/glass?

Also, do you travel with other families? Or is it private? Thanks!

You are tethered above the Hippos and the Nile Crocodiles, everywhere else, you're on a Safari truck [not the same as the regular truck, you have a bench around the outside of the truck instead of the rows] or at the lookout where you eat.

ETA: You travel in a group of I think 12, might be ten...

Are the vests part of the tour?

Yes, the vest includes your tether system for crossing the rope bridges and when you're on the overhang above the hippos and Nile crocodiles. Once you've finished those, you take off the vests and board the truck for the rest of the safari and meal. So it's only worn during the walking portion of your Trek.

OMG, if you can possibly do this, do it. Just got back and we did it on Saturday. AMAZING. also you get lunch with it that is really unique. I haven't had time to check out the photo's the leaders took but I'll post some of my own soon.

Also at every "habitat" there were a handler there that answered all our questions about the animals. The two young ladies who were our guides were "animal behaviorist" so they absolutely knew their stuff.

You also have an ear piece which makes it very easy to hear what your guide is saying clearly.
