>>LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- (05/14/2019) – The Anaheim Transportation Network has awarded an order for 40 zero-emission buses to BYD (“Build Your Dreams”), a battery-electric vehicle manufacturer with North American headquarters in Los Angeles.

The ATN fleet order will increase the number of BYD electric buses the agency can deploy to serve one of the nation’s busiest tourism and employment regions. The buses range in size from the 30-foot BYD K7M to the articulated 60-foot K11M. One-half of the order will be the popular 40-foot BYD K9M. The variety of BYD buses will allow ATN to efficiently service a range of routes in the Anaheim Resort™.

“We’ve been operating four of BYD’s 40-foot K9Ms on our routes over the past two years, and based on their performance, we are confident in BYD’s quality product and their support of our efforts to electrify our fleet,” ATN Executive Director Diana Kotler said. “These new buses will provide ATN a 57 percent zero-emission fleet by 2020.”

A private, non-profit transportation management association, ATN was created to develop and operate the Anaheim Resort Transit (“ART”) for the Anaheim Resort™ District system and surrounding areas in the city with clean fuel shuttles.

BYD Coach & Bus Vice President Bobby Hill welcomed the opportunity to continue working with ATN, a valued client, partner and repeat customer.

“Residents and visitors to the Anaheim area will enjoy the benefits of a quieter ride, a cleaner environment and the reliability of zero emission buses manufactured by BYD,” Hill said. “We’re proud to help ATN reduce the region’s carbon footprint.”

Each year more than 9.5 million residents, visitors and employees use ART to connect with local destinations and the iconic ARTIC regional transportation center as part of the citywide #ElectrifyAnaheim program.

ATN was one of 28 California projects selected in 2018 to receive a grant from the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP), which provides awards from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund to help finance transformative, reduction-of-emission capital improvements. In addition to TIRCP, ATN was also awarded funds for this significant project from the State of California HVIP vouchers, Anaheim Tourism Improvement District and the City of Norwalk. The bus order will be placed through two existing statewide contracts in Washington and Georgia, which local governments and transit agencies can access to benefit from the leveraged purchasing power, convenience and competitive pricing of these pre-established contracts – saving time and money.

When it comes to zero-emission transportation, BYD brings innovation and cutting-edge technologies to forward-thinking communities and private enterprises. The only pure electric vehicle manufacturer in the U.S. to have an all-union workforce and a pioneering Community Benefits Agreement, BYD’s Lancaster, Calif., team includes a growing number of women, veterans and second-chance employees.

OK, one nice thing about the Resort Area is that it is flat. Electric Buses and hills have not got along so far, so Anaheim is the perfect place to have one of the largest fleets in the nation, and hopes to be 100% electric before 2028. And that the Anaheim Residents don't pay one dime in taxes to ATN. It is the 2% TOT fee and Resort Businesses pay the entire bill. (Well, some outside Anaheim businesses also pay for those routes in part).

Another reason to appreciate how well the ART system runs, clean, efficient and usually on time.

Also ATN has partnered with Anaheim Public Utilities to create a Solar Panel Farm at the ATN bus yard to help power the electric buses. This is showing how the city and the Resort Area are going the extra mile. And ATN is planning to expand its service area in town, filling in gaps where the OCTA doesn't serve.

I'm sure this can't be right. Disneyland is an evil corporation and all the business it brings to town makes Anaheim a living hell for its residents and ensures their early death.

Or at least that's what I heard at a city council meeting during public comments.

I hear that on a regular basis, even from a couple of councilmembers....

The International Pow Wow is expected to deliver to Anaheim an extra 400 to 500 million in tourism dollars. I guess none of that money will end up in the city's general fund.

All Disney wants to do is take from the city, not contribute to it, at least that is what UNITE HERE and other progressive groups like the ACLU have claimed for the last 10 years.

What is Anaheim's primary source of energy? For a majority of the U.S. it's coal.

I imagine maintenance is going to be a bit cheaper (and less messy).

It is a mix, Coal and Gas are the primary sources, but quite varied overall.

Thanks. Not sure if they considered going "green" as a reason for doing this, but even with Coal / Gas as the primary sources of energy, I guess it's still a step in the right direction.
