It was intentional, but gradual.
In the 1964 version...the first three scenes we all know were pretty much the same...father on stage...mother and family off stage doing other things.
In the original ending, Mother joined Father in the living room. It was christmas night. The children had gone to the nearby airport to pick up grandma and grandpa who were coming in from a community for senior citizens.
Mother did most of the talking, but appeared stupid and bubbly.
This remained the same for the 1967-1973 Disneyland version.
When the show came to Florida in 1975, many more changes.
Father appears stern, but Mother is layed back, but wise.
the last scene was changed to the basic layout we know today...whole family split across the living room and kitchen.
Mother was now working for the clean waters committe and even worked with the town mayor. Father was cooking a meal.
In the 1980s and current version she is more business-esque, smart, while father in the current version is not as wise and stern as he used to be.
