From an article it said: "Under the Railway Labor Act, airline unions cannot strike without first asking the National Mediation Board to declare an impasse. If it does, a 30-day cooling-off period must expire before a strike or a lockout may occur." March 12, 2010

It also said they'll ask for an impasse next Tuesday, not sure how long the government will 'think about it' before granting or denying the request. But there's still 30 days after the granting of the impasse that they can't strike. Looks like you could be 42 days or so out. Hopefully the government will think about it for a couple of weeks.

Are you kidding me? We're going in about 37 days - April 21st to 27th and flying AA. We have frequent flier miles so it's free. I guess I need to look into a backup bit that's ridiculous. Going to seriously impact our budget for this trip.

I have been a Travel agent for 17 years. The last time there was even a hint of a strike was in '97. The president Clinton at that time wouldnt allow a strike. American is billion dollar buisness and they wont allow to a strike it would cost them more money to strike then to give in to the few last demands or at least compromise at the last minute. I have seen this time and time again with many airlines. The only ones I have seen actually strike is British Airways and Airfraince in recenet memory. I can remember any actually large us carriers actually striking. Lets hope that trend continues.......:sohappy:

*If* a strike does go through, you'll be fine. If you're flight doesnt go through, you have the option of having AA releasing the ticket to another airline (in very simple terms, tickets are certificates of cash - even though you bought your ticket on AA - it has a cash value associated based on what you paid that any airline can redeem. To do this though, AA has to voluntarily release it if they dont already give access to it to some airlines). At that point, you'll be able to take your ticket and go to any other airline which has capacity to fly to TX out of Orlando. My guess is that you are going to Dallas, in which case, you have quite a few options. You can either take Continental to IAH (Houston) and connect there to go to either Dallas Love or DFW, or Delta offers quite a few options to the Dallas area (both airports) through either their hub in Atlanta or Memphis. Then there's always Southwest which offers quite a few direct flights. Either way, dont sweat it.
