Should I go out of my way to see a DLP showing? :shrug:

Depends on how far out of your way it would be. I think digital showings are the way to go when they are offered. The picture clarity is clearly in a different league than traditional projection and makes for a better movie-going experience imo. However, I see most my movies in theaters in regular projection and that is perfectly fine as well. If it is available at your local theater(s), go for it.

It depends on the theater. If the picture clarity of digital showings have clarity that is clearly in a different league than the places you've seen regular 35mm projection aren't doing a very good job of it. In a theater with good, well-maintained and well-run 35mm equipment the quality of a film showing will be slightly better than a DLP show. In a theater with the highest quality 35mm equipment run by people that really know what they are doing, the 35mm picture will be clearly better than a DLP show. DLP does not come close to the contrast and black level that a 35mm print is capable of. DLP may appear a little sharper and there will not be any dirt or scratches (but a well-run 35mm print won't have those either) but you have to trade that off with the lower contrast and black level and not quite as natural flesh tones.

In short, it depends on the theater that you normally go to. If the film projection looks fine than it is not worth going out of the way to see DLP. If the film projection where you are is below par than it is worth it. Specifically at AMC Pleasure Island 24, their film presentation is at least as good (and usually a little better) as the DLP presentation so at that particular theater I'd be more inclined to go out of my way to see it in Auditorium 1 or 2 (with the 65 foot screens and balcony) than to see it in DLP.

I've only seen digital showings at the AMC PI theaters, and thought the picture quality was definetely better. In fact, it was the first Pirate film during a repeat viewing that I, by accident, saw it digitally projected and was impressed with the clarity, which to my untrained eyes appeared to be in a different league imo. Perhaps I didn't notice the contrast differences, but the clarity is something that I immediately noticed. I'm with you though when talking about the PI theater, if I had my choice, I'd choose auditorium 1 or 2 with its massive screen over a digitial showing in their other large, although smaller than 1 or 2, theaters as well. However if I wasn't in one of those two theaters, I would want to see digitally projected.

Same here. I'm hoping a matinee might be easier to get into. I arrive on the 25th, but probably won't go over the weekend. I'm thinking mid-week might be best, if I can go at all.

You must have been seated pretty far back for that showing. Pleasure Island got the new 2k DLP projectors for Chicken Little in 2005. The first Pirates would have been on the old 1.3k projector which had lower resolution than standard HDTV. It wasn't until the 2k projectors (and more recently the JPEG2000 encoding) that Digital Cinema really started to shine.

I'm so excited!!!! I worked on this film over a year ago, I can't believe it's only a week away from opening, AAAHHH!!!! But now I'm currently overseas in Taiwan, touring with a show and no where near DTD anymore, hahaha. But I'm still hoping to find an english showing of it all the way out here, haha. I guess that is all the more reason for me to see it in digitial if I get the chance? If I was impressed by the old digital projectors, I'm sure I would enjoy the upgraded ones as well. I'm not sure if I've seen a digital showing at PI since Chicken Little came out.

Either way, the question initially posed was would you go out of your way to see P3 digitially projected. My opinion was yes. Obviously though there is a lot more to it than I initially thought, but I know I'd still personally see it that way, at least once, if I had the chance. But given everything you stated, would you say it's reasonable that if one of your more local theaters doesn't have digital, at least at this point, that there would be no benefit at all to travel a bit further to a theater that does?

I'm all set to sail for Thursday! I think it'll be in 19. (You know you're a WDW geek if you know which theatre that is, what the seating is like, and know exactly where it is in the building!) If so, that's where I first saw Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl! When I saw a long line of people dressed as pirates that morning, I knew this movie was going to be BIG!

You're talking about the first weekend showings? If so, you can buy tickets right now or when you arrive for the limited showtimes they've put up at the moment... the full showtimes should be up on Tuesday evening so you'll be able to purchase tickets for any showtime then.

They're still there - Virgin side ones are inside the lobby and PI side ones are outside the entrance.

Friday and Saturday night shows will no doubt sell out very early, but Sunday and Monday evening shows should be fine. That being said, I'd watch out for sellouts on Sunday and Monday during the day because of the holiday.
