AMC at Downtown Disney

According to the Save Pleasure Island blog the AMC Pleasure Island 24 is reportedly going to reduce their number of theaters down to twenty, merge several together, and add tables to those theaters. No formal announcements have been made regarding these changes, but presumably those theaters will most likely offer some sort of expanded consumption options.

In addition, the new name of the theater will be the AMC Downtown Disney 20. This reflects the changes made earlier to the Downtown Disney map's nomenclature which dropped references to the three distinct areas of Downtown Disney as well as a reduction in the complex's theaters.

As well the ticketing windows and lobby area adjacent to RideMakers and Wolfgang Puck's is currently closed for renovations. You will not be able to access the theater or purchase tickets from that side of the building.

I like the sound of those ideas. Definately will give the theater more interest.

Wasn't there also rumored that they'd add an Imax theater at some point?

I like everything about this. Better crowd control was needed I think. Also, the theaters with service plus larger screens including the rumored IMAX's. But there is also a bonus. If they are closing the lobby on the west side of the building they could be planning to use that space for something new. Compared to the other stores on that side it is a rather large area. If I was guessing......oh nevermind, I will wait for the announcement that should be coming soon.

Since the name of Pleasure Island is being dropped and replaced with something "nautical", the theater too had to rid itself of the Pleasure Island name.

Since that area of DD is some sort of Bermuda Triangle, I was afraid it was going to close based on the title.

Thank Goodness that is not the case. I will be watching Tangled there in a few weeks.

IMO the theatre needs some stroller control. Last visit, we were there for TS3 opening so we took the kids to AMC for the movie. My son uses a WC. ALL of the WC areas were full of strollers. We weren't the only WC family but all of us had to make a point to approach people and ask them to vacate the WC seats. They looked at us like we were crazy. Personally, I think all theatres could use more WC seats or have other areas as options. I saw a theatre once with a lift to the top of stadium seating for two chairs.

I wonder if they're going to be transforming some of them into a combination restaurant and movie theatre establishment. Those have become quite popular recently......

If I remember correctly, I believe the largest theaters have elevators so the all levels have easy access. I also think these might be the ones getting the IMAX upgrades.

What I hear is that the theatre will be split in half. The Pleasure Island side will be one theatre, and the West Side will be another.. Currently, the West Side entrance is closed during the extensive refurb, where luxury seating, tables, and a restaurant are being added. Tickets will be more expensive for the new West Side theatre. Guests will be able to purchase dinner and drinks at the new venue.

I am glad they are doing something. While I continue to visit the AMC Pleasure Island theater, I still hold the opinion that it is one of the worst designed theaters I have been to.
On countless occasions, I have sat in seats in various theaters and found that the view is pretty terrible. The worst was in one theater, there is a seat against the wall just behind high enough up to be the first above one of the side entrances. When you are sitting in that seat, a whole 25% of the screen is blocked by the balcony railing in front of you. (...if that makes any sense.)

Some theaters have tons of room from screen to back of the theater, but vertically it doesn't have much. Some theaters are really small. Some have awkward aisles mid-theater while others do not. I really think they designed it with the building height on the outside in mind, rather than what makes sense for stadium seating and screens on the inside.

The AMC @ DTD got excluded in the IMAX retrofit list. Since then AMC installed their own system called ETX (located at theater 1). Also projection all around has been changing from film based to Digital Cinema based (4K resolution projection).

I do see doing the Cinema Suites to some theaters. But other that that not so much.

Per AMC Site;

Enhanced Theatre Experience:
ETX Includes 20% larger floor-to-ceiling screen, breathtaking sound and digital projection that is higher resolution than HD.

Cinema Suites:It's the ultimate in luxury movie going at an affordable price. AMC guests age 21 and over can upgrade to a Cinema Suites auditorium featuring reserved seating and luxury recliners. Cinema Suites' premium, upscale in-theater dining and entertainment experience also includes swivel tables and eight-foot row spacing.

do you know what they charge for the Cinema Suites and do they serve beer?

The Cinema Suites, at least here in Kansas City, are an additional $20-$25 fee. However, you are given back that fee in the form of a voucher that is used towards the cost of your food and beverages. And yes, beer and alcohol are included. No one under the age of 21 is allowed inside.

They may also be adding Fork & Screen theaters, which are kind of like Cinema Suites except they allow children (and don't have the reclining leather loveseats that the Cinema Suites do). These theaters are an additional $10 fee, which is given back as a voucher for food and beverages. Beer and alcohol are also served in these theaters.

hmm then we weren't in the largest theatres. We didn't do the 3D version since that would have added another ~$40 to our cost:(

@AMC PI the 3D theaters are 1 (ETX), and the the ones by the 20's. The Old DLP's where at the 18 / 19 area.

But with the new Digital Cinema theaters, any theater could be 3D.
