Epcot 2010
In this alternate universe we will explore what Epcot might have looked like if Brand new CEO Bob Iger had invested in a park wide overhaul the size of the transformation of Disney's California Adventure.

Epcot of 2006
In case we have forgotten the Epcot that existed when Bob Iger took over was a very different place than it is today or even when it opened. Here's what the Imagineers of Epcot 2010 had to work with:

The parks newest attractions are Soarin' which opened a year earlier in the Land and Mission Space which opened 3 years earlier and underperformed to the company's expectations. The wonder's of life has begun to operate only seasonally and the Living Seas pavilion has fell into disrepair with the Seacab attraction closed off. Also notable most current attraction sponsorships are coming to a close in the upcoming years and with the rise of new and faster moving technologies its likely most will decline to renew.
Stay tuned to find out how the Imagineers Revitalize Epcot

I think I have that map from my 2003 trip!

May the imagineers be greatly inspired in what they bring to Epcot!

So Guardians of the Galaxy is still happening in Epcot?
Not in this Universe, but I have a separate idea for an entire Marvel based overhaul of Epcot given Disney gets the rights back from Universal after purchasing Marvel in 2009 that I may post later.

From this point on whenever curious about the timeline of these additions refer to this post because the individual projects will not be posted in chronological order. This is due to the fact that this idea began as just a few individual pavilion overhauls before expanding into a park wide redevelopment. Thus certain projects that are further along in the timeline are already finished, while some earlier on in the timeline aren't. Sorry for the confusion but that is how it's going to work.

The Italy pavilion has always been one of Epcot's least built out pavilions, but in 2009 it will receive an expansion in line with the direction of world showcase at the time. In order to make World Showcase more appealing to children and families a Pinocchio ride will be added at the back of the pavilion along with a brand new restaurant.
italy_rend_1982_20120502_2072385510.jpg

Pinocchio's Daring Journey
A copy of the ride which was added to Disneyland back during the 80's will be built at the rear of the pavilion. The exterior of the Epcot version is inspired by the architecture of Rome, and is made to be a theater. Out front posters can be seen advertising Stromboli's puppet show. The queue and mural are both recreations of what can be found in Disneyland.

Via Napoli
A new Italian restaurant is added to the right of the Pinocchio attraction and features both a sit down component and a quick service pizza window. Seating for the quick service window can be found outside while seating for the sit-down restaurant is located on the second floor of the Via Napoli restaurant and above the façade of Pinocchio's Daring Journey.

Once completed this expansion brings Italy more inline with other World Showcase Pavilions like Mexico and France featuring multiple dining locations and an attraction. This expansion does effect the Magic Kingdom as well however as Pinocchio's Village house is renamed and redecorated into The Be Our Guest Restaurant. The menu however is left unchanged. The restaurant is then renamed and redecorated again in 2012 due to the opening of New Fantasyland to The Snuggly Duckling Restaurant from the film Tangled.

Sounds awesome!

I do have to say though, Pinocchio is a German folktale...

Development

When development started on the Epcot Revival in late 2006 the France Pavilion immediately stood out as a perfect location for a new family oriented attraction in World Showcase. Originally plans ranged from an Aristocats themed Impressions de France replacement to a Hunchback of Notre Dame dark ride, but once the Pixar film Ratatouille came out Imagineer's saw it as the only option for a France Pavilion expansion. As ideas were coming together an opportunity to bring the attraction to the real city of Paris was just to great to pass up. As the now 2 identical trackless dark rides moved forwards in development it was decided that the Walt Disney Studios Paris version of the attraction would be paired with a new signature dining experience and brand new themed area while the Epcot version moved ahead as a stand alone ride. The rides would also in a controversial decision to cut down on costs have the same bi lingual dialogue. The WDSP version would open first in the summer of 2014 and the EPCOT version would open a year later in the summer of 2015.

Attraction

1618937241735.png

When standing in front of the attraction the entrance can be found to the right of the pavilion along the banks of the miniature river Seine. The queue is mostly outdoors underneath a canopy between the river and Impressions de France theater. Guests queue in a small court yard complete with a small rat inspired fountain by the iconic flower garden across from the International Gateway before heading inside the show building. The façade of the show building continues the romanticized Paris look and feel. upon the roof of the building is the iconic Gusteau's sign.

la_place_de_remy-1024x668.jpg

Once inside the show building the Epcot and WDSP versions are identical until reaching the exit. The Epcot version of the attraction has guests exit down a long hallway before spills out into the same giftshop as Impressions de France.

Other Additions

b9c6a6e02a34cec1584d42029a38d0ea.jpg

Along with the brand new ride a few other changes occur to the pavilion. Firstly a French Bakery is added onto the exit of Impressions de France. The new Bakery is a sort of replacement to the restaurant found in WDSP as guests exiting Ratatouille Kitchen Calamity walk right past while exiting the ride. With new permanent homes in New Fantasyland the princess Meet and Greets offered in the pavilion are replaced by one with Remy and on very rare occasions his brother Emile.

Conclusion

Now the only pavilion with two major attractions the France Pavilion is a must do at Epcot for families look for a fun character based attraction or adults looking for a bite to eat and a look at the real France.

Also a few changes have been made to the timeline, mainly the Wall-e film for the Land has been removed. I began writing it and it just didn't work so instead the character will be part of the Innoventions replacement/refurbishment. The next project is a shorter one an should be posted soon.

A Brand New 4D Experience Coming To The Imagination Pavilion
Toy Story To Infinity And Beyond is a 4D film inspired by the opening of Toy Story 3. The film located in the Magic Eye theater at the Imagination Pavilion is all about how toys are a tool that bring a child's imagination to life. The attraction was designed for Epcot primarily but the film will also be played in the Cinemagique theater at Walt Disney Studios Paris and replace Muppet Vision 3D at Disney California Adventure. At Epcot the show will replace the Captain EO Tribute and open during the holiday season of 2010. Which is just about 6 months after Toy Story 3 opened in theaters.

Attraction Outline

maxresdefault.jpg

The experience begins with the waiting room which has been repainted to resemble the iconic walls of Andy's room. Guests then proceed to the pre-show which is a mini documentary about the making of the Toy Story films with interviews, including John Lasseter, Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and more. The pre-show ends with a montage of all the adventures the toys have gone on so far to the song You've Got A Friend In Me.
latest

After the preshow concludes guests proceed into the main theater to watch the film. The film begins with Andy arriving back home and rushing up the stairs to his room. He then picks up woody and buzz and begins to play. Then guests are shown the fantastical world inside Andy's head with Woody and Buzz rushing to stop a runaway train. The film then follows the duo as they stop the runaway train aided by Jesse before they are attacked by the Evil Doctor Porkchop. A climatic battle commences and while they put up a good our heroes begin to lose. Then just when Woody Buzz and Jesse are about to be disintegrated with a laser Andy's Mom interrupts telling Andy it's time for bed. The fantasy world quickly fades back into the reality of Andy's bedroom and the film closes with Woody coming to life for a moment to smile and wink at the audience.
toy-story.jpg

The film is 14 minutes in length and includes a number of lighting, water, wind, and bubble effects to immerse the audience further into the story. Also in addition to the film guests can now meet Woody and Jesse in the ImageWorks and Toy Story Topiaries now decorate the landscaping around the Imagination Pavilion.

Sorry This update took so long but I've been incredibly busy in real life. Expect more updates at an accelerated pace from here on out. The Japan Pavilion attraction should be the next post.

Background

When the EPCOT overhaul began the main objectives put down by CEO Bob Iger to add more attractions to World Showcase and to integrate popular Pixar characters into the park. Imagineers always saw the empty show building in the Japan pavilion as a great place to add an attraction to World Showcase but none of their pitches picked up steam until John Lasseter shared the details on the upcoming cars sequel to the imagineers.
Once learning the sequel would take Lightning McQueen and the gang to Tokyo the imagineers knew they could craft a story with the Cars characters and world appropriate for Epcot. The Cars attraction in the Japan pavilion began by borrowing assets from the already underway Cars Land project. Based on the IP and probable budget a Mr Toad esq dark ride thru the city of Tokyo made the most sense. However, things changed once some imagineers in R&D showed the Team working on the attraction an exciting new ride system. The system which allowed for two dark ride vehicles to race each other while on the same track was exactly the thing needed to push this attraction to the next level. The imagineers showed John Lasseter the pitch. He was immediately on board and supportive of the project and with John Lasseter on board the attraction quickly got the green light.

https://patents.google.com/patent/US7921781B2/en?q=~patent/US5623878A

Construction of the attraction started in late 2010 and it was announced to the public at the 2011 d23 expo. The attraction along with a new gift shop opened Memorial Day weekend 2012 around a year after Cars 2 and just two weeks ahead of Cars Land.

Exterior

The exterior of the attraction is almost exactly as it was before. Guests approach the feudal Japanese fortress except now a banner is hung above the gate featuring the name of the attraction. Another two banners are hung on either side of the gate showcasing some of the finest racers we’ll be racing against in the attraction.

Queue
After entering the fortress the queue is fairly simple and is themed to the pits of the race way. As guests weave around the metal dividers they can view advertisements for the many brands of the Cars world like Rustee’s and Dinoco along with monitors displaying the Japanese Lightning McQueen advertising. Guests then reach the boarding area and are briefed by Mater about the safety procedures using the overhead speakers. Guests are then clear to board the ride vehicles and join the race.

Ride Vehicles

The ride vehicles are really sets of two Cars that are connected but to guests boarding the attraction they appear as two entirely different ride vehicles. Each Car has two rows and holds 5 people 2 in the front 3 in the back and each ride vehicle has two cars with a capacity of 10 people. The ride vehicles are designed to look like Nascars and come in a variety of colors like blue, yellow, red, orange, and green. They appear very similarly to the ride vehicles of the Cars attraction of Walt Disney Studios Paris.

Ride Experience

Note: the ride features no audio animatronics. Any characters described in the rest of the post are either animated figures like the Jungle Cruise or static figures like the Fantasyland dark rides. Also the attraction travels at a top speed of about double the speed of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. The illusion of speed is created thru air and light effects. These effects are aided by tight turns and the ride vehicles’ rotation in order to make the race exciting.

After exiting the load area both cars come face to face with Lightning and Mater who wish the racers luck with the big race. These figures use the same projected mouths technique from Cars Land. Lightning tells off he’ll see us on the track and the vehicle takes off into the next scene.
dlLixNW0blcWWeki4uEonYvRp2CR2dMAS5t4rCDgLE_Is8rl-URQ8dp-dAbCZZT_dEstg1ZTkdvPLsXGFe7WJF03l4lcxN1ZhqzwvUrt45eIErN_li9dOvox07_24oarLCdaFJQk=s0

The cars realign to be side by side as they come up to the starting line. An announcer counts down ready, set, go in Japanese as the lights turn from red to yellow to blue. Once the light turns blue the vehicle takes off as screens either side of the vehicle show other racers taking off and passing the guest’s cars.
HvTcKjdVKAbO80FV9xwaPgSzCHrPeDqxitDX31gfG8m6eqib6SA-deHwD2gM6b-Ctw0RR3jBhxXz5OMMXU1nfgomuxagHAxuFRW_e_AHLZa8khTj0mHj68Zp7qotjCT2zqY3ZCHt=s0

The vehicles cross the starting line and drive thru a quick s-bend in the track before heading up an incline to a second level. As the vehicle progresses thru the track the car leading is switched to make the ride feel like a race that either vehicle could win. Around both of these scenes are high rise buildings decorated with colorful billboards and neon lights.

After reaching the top of the incline the vehicles take another turn and as they do guests aboard either car get an elevated view of the city of Tokyo and Mount Fuji towering over it. This is accomplished with a combination of miniatures, projections, and a large mural. Once completing the turn the track straightens out and the vehicles speed up before reaching another turn.
EtlGXdyMXw7HB2XQzpZKySy_u-pYj_0Bq4cMhmxxCo7f0MaeEjAGYsyMp7-gWe616u82D7VIcAorB1lIwmRDMYX6UOkjAEH0WInxJHa6UlhWxT8rWMK9uaQ0Qaq7A6g0f86ZnXKu=s0

After completing the turn guests see a massive pile up in front of them and the vehicle makes a sharp right turn. The vehicle then slows down simulating a slam on the brakes and riders crash into a high rise building. Then either car and experiences a unique show scene that the other one does not.

The first scene takes place in a bathroom as the car turns outwards to face a screen. The scene is quick and guests are sprayed with water multiple times simulating the experience of a Japanese toilet. The car then turns and rushes out of the bathroom.

The other scene takes place in a sushi restaurant and a chef car offers the guest’s car some wasabi. After a few seconds steam begins to rise from the guests car’s mouth and they take off out of the shop.
P-0JZlHusXn3_HxqLOZ38XZSF7MlWjxxbrxiztGcmP6BINvx7Ey7jJofz52M5-aFhubYyqVE2kBYAstBh4ODsewIaopJxAvvGjVIdUefkUgvJtIEs6sNILmbuiNrxaLk3jt6NPqR=s0

The racers then reunite and go through a couple of quick turns down city streets before reaching a long straight section of track. The ride vehicle drives over a miniature recreation of Tokyo’s Rainbow Bridge. As the cars race down the bridge they pass Francisco and Lightning McQueen becoming the leading cars in the race.
PA_Z8vu8mqM9knA6V5YmioZvB3DyDRNsQADJZNRlYY3eIlGePrwO2rMMD2MwNP7PgHQJYCEpBMgAZrV5BCgjDWuapAuz-6qKD6a76WJPuzkffbDSctTUUEjy0Kh0SZ3PoQTMT2BA=s0

The vehicles then spiral downward on a type of exit ramp before reaching the last straight section of track towards the finish line. On either side of the track are stands full of cheering fans. The ride then comes to a close with a checkered flag being waved and one of the two cars randomly winning the race.
JRBTLOHmPkZMK8-PKV5P2ITZ-E8lFcDJ2ey-xOJFVyD91BIuj1asZW79p_mm3aOXmXZ1BB2PB0j8XlPU-SdYXVnawcXOxYdzqXvv_ARqNCq4fy-qvIefTcbk5f1qkH8imOoIhUk8=s0

After slowing down the vehicles pass Lightning and Francisco who congratulate the guests on their victory and praise their driving skills. The vehicle then continues back into a pit stop and reaches the unload station.

Cars Pit Shop

The unload area leads to the brand new gift shop for the attraction that sells all sorts of Cars merchandise like diecast cars, t-shirts, hoodies, and much much more. This shop then leads into the already existing Mitsukoshi store.

Guest reception

The ride proved to be popular among families, especially those with young boys. However, most Disney fans found the attraction strange and disappointing when compared to the much larger and impressive Radiator Springs Racers. Epcot fans were especially upset because they believed the attraction disrupted the themes of World Showcase and didn’t belong in Epcot.
