A review of Ka wa'a luau at Aulani.
I don't know what this luau would have under non-pandemic situation. I'm sure there are a lot more that we would have received than what we got last night.
But for what we got, it was worth the money! It was a terrific presentation. It was entertaining, educational, and emotional. It is not your typical "touristy" luau, because there is a story and a very personal one involving the presenters, who were brother and sister. They told the story that was specific to the location, not just Hawaii or even Oahu, but rather to the Ewa plains in particular and how the area was settled by their ancestors and how it has changed. Nothing here felt contrived or pandering to the tourists, which is what I wanted.
There was more than enough food. The quality was so-so. The chicken and beef were excellent flavor-wise, but the beef was a bit chewy. The fish must have been caught in a desert, because it was dry dry dry dry. I think I enjoyed the appetizers more than the main meal. The poi was the milder version that didn't have too much fermentation, suitable for most palette.
On the whole, it was a fun and worthwhile entertainment, even for a pandemic version.
