Ah AE, my favorite attraction of all time. Thouh I prefer this vid better
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2961121530350290312&q=tomorrowland While I do like the character of Stitch the attraction in my eyes is a failure for certain reasons.
Story- When it comes to Disney, you got to have a good story. Stitch has a muddled story with plot holes and a very anticlimatic ending. We all know we are not supposed to bring food on any attraction yet Stitch steals a chili dog from someone. We know this is a prequel of the movie yet Experiment 626 calls himself "Stitch".
The theme itself fitting in- A space prison center doesn't seem to fit as well as a intergalatic convention center.
Trying to pull off a "Family friendly" attraction with effects that cannot be "Family Friendly"- This is the major reason why this attraction fails. I know Disney was trying to make a kid friendly attraction but they should have known kids don't like the dark and surprises they can't see. I know this is a slight improvement of being more kid friendly but I find it worse. With AE the smart parents could tell by the name and warning signs that this was not for little kids. But with SGE they pull off the biggest deception of them all! Parents look at the sign and see Stitch, they know Stitch is NOT a scary character to their kids so they take them on. But once the lights go out and the effects go off and their kids start crying they begin thinking "HUH?!"
The worse part about it is they watered down the effects so much that the teens and adults do get a thrill or just about anything, but for the little kids it's way too much for them. Another thing is since the jokes aim for the little kids at a young height and that they raised the height requirement repeatedly most of the target audience can't go on. While the rest of the target audience goes on and gets the soul scared out of them while everyone else is bored.
I know there are a few that like SGE but they are in the minority. Just go over to Themeparkinsider and try to look for a positive review of SGE.
Story - I have no problem with the story in Stitch's Great Escape! It's outlandish, granted, but that's what makes it humorous. Of course no one would ever make you a guardian of a level 3 detention cell on your first day to the center. Gantu's video expecting you to know every one of the aliens by the end of the day only goes to emphasize how silly the idea itself is. Next, plot holes. It's a "living" cartoon. You expected reality? I didn't. I always found the plot point in Alien Encounter ridiculous that the alien would run back to the middle of the room just because someone screamed loudly when it had plenty of people it could have eaten all around it still screaming their heads off.
"We all know we are not supposed to bring food on any attraction yet Stitch steals a chili dog from someone." - Hmm. As someone who worked in attractions at Disneyland I can say with 100% certainty that people sneak food on attractions all the time. People also stick food in their purses, backpacks, whatever. Stitch has a big nose. He'd smell it out and eat it.
"We know this is a prequel of the movie yet Experiment 626 calls himself "Stitch" - I've answered this before as well. First, logic isn't necessary when dealing with a "cartoon" universe. Second, I point out to you an incredibly popular attraction at the Disney-MGM Studios that doesn't jibe with the plots of the movies it's based on - Star Tours. Let me see, you've got C3PO and R2D2 working for a tour company (completely ignoring that they belong to Luke), they've obviously been through episodes 4, 5, and 6 by this point as they're discussing past visits to Hoth, Endor, Tatooine, etc. Now, once on board you start to make your way to the moon of Endor, which, interestingly enough, has another Death Star around it. This time, though, the Death Star has the same fatal flaw as the one in episode 4...an exhaust port. Also, there's the obvious question: what they heck are they doing offering jaunty excursions to Endor when the area is under attack by the Empire. Duh. Stitch calling himself Stitch is a minor thing in comparison.
I'll give you the location argument. You're right, an interplanetary covention center is definitely much more positive than a detention center.
I can't agree with your next argument, though. I would never have recommended Alien Encounter to my friend. He has two daughters - ages 6 and 9 - the elder of which is afraid of just about everything dark. Alien Encounter was frightening and gross to a lot of adults who went on it, the kids I heard in there were scared out of their minds. On the other hand, after going on Stitch twice, I called my friend and told him to go for it. Neither child lost it, because they understood it was an attraction with Stitch, and they would be okay because of that. Also, when he's prowling around loose in the theater, he's doing things like sniffing people, eating chili dogs, etc. It's all stuff that won't scare the daylights out of kids, and it ends with Stitch escaping into the Park, which for some kids might just mean they could find him and get an autograph (just a guess on my part).
No, it's not supposed to be scary like Alien Encounter. I think of it more along the lines of a high-tech Sounds Dangerous! or Song of the Rainforest, both of which I love to do, too. It's humorous, to me, anyway, and both times I exited the attraction, I heard comments along the lines of "That was cool." I am not making that up. Most of the extremely negative comments I see are from those who are just angry Alien Encounter was taken out. They probably would have hated just about anything that replaced it. Call it a theory.
