AKL-Unusually booked up in early December - what gives?

So I'm traveling to AKL for my honeymoon December 5-10 this year. We've been trying to get an upgrade to club level but so far there's just none available.

Just out of curiosity I checked the resort's availability for both our week and for surrounding weeks, and the results are a little.. odd. I checked Saturday-Thursday to have like-for-like results with our week there.

Here's what I'm seeing right now:

11/21-11/26: All room classes except Standard Club level and 1BR Suite available
11/28-12/03: All room classes except Standard Club level available
12/5-12/10: Only 2BR Suite Available
12/12-12/17: Standard View, Pool View Bunk Bed, Savannah View, Savannah View Bunk Bed, and 2BR Suite available
12/18-12/24: All room classes except Standard Club level and 1BR Suite available (Week before Christmas!)

That's right, AKL is almost COMPLETELY booked up the week I'm going, and far more booked up than even the week before Christmas!

Does anyone know what's going on that week that's so special? Why is the resort so full? I had picked our honeymoon for early December because I thought we'd avoid the crowds, but it looks like we've stumbled right into the middle of them somehow!

Early December used to be the low season, prior to the internet. Now that many people have read about how nice the weather is, how uncrowded the parks are (were) how the decorations are all up, and many of the Holiday activities are starting (Osborne lights, MVMCP) it has become busy again.

There is another thread asking the same question about September/October.

The values and moderates are also being flooded with Pop Warner that week. AKL is the cheapest deluxe so some people are going there to avoid the teenagers at the lower level resorts.

Last year we went that first week of Dec and my parents decided they wanted to go as well. They wanted to stay at GF and tried to book in Sept/Oct. They had no availability for the full week and they tried for pretty much any of the deluxe resorts for the full week and couldn't get anything so they ended up booking what they could at GF and the rest at CSR. They kept checking daily online to see if there were any changes and by the time they left in Dec they had the full week booked at GF, I guess b/c someone cancelled or they opened up more bookings, I'm really not sure why. That said sometimes you just have to be persistent.
PS it wasn't really that busy when we went, but who knows w/ free dining this year.

Well there goes our plan for our quiet romantic getaway.

Thanks for the replies all. I'm worried this won't be the honeymoon we planned for any more, but I suppose we'll make do.

A vacation is what you make of it. You can be at the most fantastic, romantic resort in the world, but a bad attitude can ruin it. And you can be staying at a Motel 6 with the right person, and it will be paradise.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, and just relax and enjoy yourselves. There are always places at WDW to get away from the crowds.

So true.

A 'glass is half empty' person could stay in a suite at the Grand Floridian and still find things to complain about.

While the 'glass is half full' person could get their wallet stolen while staying in a gardener's shed at the Pop Century, and they'd still talk about what a great vacation they had.

Be part of the 'half full" crowd!:sohappy:
