Quick question in light of this mornings 35 degree weather (to cold for me) how does AK take care of their animals in the deep cold. Just curious. Thanks. little over 48 hours and counting till I am at MK and getting shots of COP and TK

I would assume that they have heated "sleeping" areas where they can move the animals who have a problem with the cold. Unless it is EXTREMELY cold, most of the lions, elephants, etc can be out during the day; they'll just find a sunny spot...if it's overcast and still freezing, they'll probably keep them in. Certain tigers actually enjoy the cold. The truly tropical animals (the Komodo comes to mind) will probably be off display, unless the rock is heated. The macaws would probably be kept inside. I don't know about the bats...it looks like they could probably heat that area, if needed.

I was a zoo docent at both the Jacksonville zoo and Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, RI, so have seen this first hand. I also remember going to the Toronto Zoo during the winter (with snow...for cross country skiing) and lots of the animals were still out during the day.

When it was below a certain temperature we would keep certain animals inside and "off show." Most of the things that were affected were the Macaws and other feathered animals. Marcia, you are correct that some tigers do like the cold but the ones that DAK has are not that species, unfortunately. I do not remember what animals on the Safari are kept off show in the cold mornings (I was always in the Oasis when it was morning.)

what species are those tigers? I alwas thought they were Amur (formerly Siberian) Tigers, which live where it is extremely cold. Interesting! As for the rocks being heated, I'm sure they are. Disney wants to keep the animals in the public eye whenever possible, so they would have done everything possible to make sure cool weather did not affect the animals. I think it would have to stay below freezing for a sustained period of time for them to have to pull all the animals off exhibit. You should see the behind the scenes areas where they keep the animals...amazing! I definitely recommend the Backstage Safari, and I'm sure they could tell you exactly how they keep each animal warm--specifically when you talk to the keepers or vets.

Kyle,
You are right that the animals have incredible back stage habits and they recieve the best care possible. Do you remember who led your back stage safari? One of the guys that I worked with does a lot of them.
As for the Tigers they are not Siberian, they are a hybrid and we do not know axactly what type of hybrids. We were told to tell guests that they are Asian.

The AKL is actually a fair distance from AK. The animals at AKL must be diurnal...they wouldn't make noise at night unless someone disturbed them. I've stayed at AKL, and with the balcony doors closed, A/C running, TV on, etc, you really can't hear the animals until you go out on the balcony, and even then they aren't very loud. As I recall, only the birds make any noise.
