Airplane explosion on Fort Wilderness Beach...(UPDATED WITH PHOTOS)

...My younger brother is over at Fort Wilderness Campground right now and I thought I 'd pass this bit of interesting info on to all of us here.

Last night on Clementine Beach at Fort Wilderness (the beach near the boat dock and the Hoop Dee Doo Revue), there was a huge explosion that shook the entire nearby Trail's End Restaurant. Apparently the entire area was ropped off and all that he could see last night was part of plane and lots of fire balls. Don't worry, a plane didn't crash into FW or anything, turns out it was all a practice for a convention being held tonight according to a guy working on the effects that my brother talked to.

Around 6-7:30pm tonight, there will be an ESPN convention with over 300 people being held over at the Backyard BBQ at Fort Wilderness. The attendees will be coming in on a boat first where they will witness a little show...The entire evening event is being centered around Disney/ABC's hit TV show LOST. The folks on the boat will first hear a plane coming in using loudspeakers and then they will witness a decent size explosion on the beach at Fort Wilderness leaving behind what appears to be a crashed airplane (much like on the TV show). Then they will take people off the boat and onto the beach, take them around and past the destruction and then into backyard BBQ.

My brother said that they were re-setting up things today after last night's practice and that there are a lot of propane tanks and what appers to be "dynamite" being put into the sand. He's hoping to catch a video and/or photos of it tonight. Unfortunately, he won't have access to download them until next Monday when he returns home..but when he does, I'll try and get them up as soon as possible :).

Oh Good Lord... Another marketing tactic by Disney... sigh... Although this one sounds cool... Anyone betting on a Wisteria Lane land in MGM?

Due to an upcoming private event, there will be pyrotechnic effects on the evenings of Tuesday, January 18 beginning at 7pm and on Wednesday, January 19 beginning at 6:45pm in the Magic Kingdom resort area. These effects will last approximately 5 minutes.

"Lost Island"

alright... but did anyone just have an epiphany? as in realizing how cool this effect might look... and thinking how can normal day guests get to experience this??? how about good ol discovery island, left cold and deserted.... uh huh... think about it... if this test event goes well we could see renewed use of this old island by creating a synergistic tie in with the world of Lost... forget myst island... here's sumthin disney already HAS the rights to.... it could be HUGE!! and it could all start with that VERY effect as guests make there way to the island via ferry!... OH the creative juices are flowing! just maybe...

I would hope that the resort was warning people when they check in about this. It could be something that can disturb someones stay.

^^Although my brother didn't get one, apparently they put flyers on the RVs/cabins about the "explosion" as others around had them...

brilliant marketing play for lost.. have a plane blow up on the how.. at the island... and hear monster sounds.. and see sometihng move in the water.. that will boost the ratings...

I could see at night having a show. Start by having guests on the ferry and pulling them near the island. Get some fog machines going and a few pyrotechnics later...bam you have a plane crash. Play some of Lost's eerie music, get a few polar bears, have a monster effect moving the trees, and don't forget about Lock throwing a knife on the ship missing you by a hair. Okay, I have no idea where they'd go with this but it would make a good show (nothing permenant of course).

Hello, this is CTXRover's brother. As you can see I just got back from Walt Disney World and have put the photos from the ESPN convention onto the net.

Hmmm, does anyone know if "NX-211" is anything significant?

Yes, It's the Ryan NYP that Charles A. Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic. You might know it better as "The Spirit of St. Louis"

Kinda an odd choice of airplane... but I guess they had one laying around the prop shop.

Chales Lindbergh's plane "Spirit of St. Louis" had the call numbers N-X-211. In fact the plane kind of resembles Lindbergh's plane.
