The Indiana Jones Adventure is celebrating 15 years at Disneyland. The Disneyland Resort Line Magazine had a nice little article on it, I thought I'd share it with you guys here.
15 Years of Adventure
On March 3, deep in the heart of Adventureland, in an ancient temple, Indiana Jones Adventure will celebrate 15 years of transporting "tourists" into the Temple of the Forbidden Eye.
When Raiders of the Lost Ark premiered in 1981, Imagineers Tony Baxter, senior vice president of Creative Development at WDI, and Skip Lange were instantly inspired by the possibilities of creating an Indiana Jones attraction.
"I remember thinking Raiders of the Lost Ark would make the ultimate attraction," said Baxter. "As Fate would have it, George Lucas was excited about working with Disney. We went to talk to him about a Star Wars attraction in the mid '80s, knowing we would have to develop what would become Star Tours before we could take an even bigger technical leap to bring Indiana Jones into the real world."
One of the attraction elements that Baxter is most proud of is the final sequence that includes the rolling ball from the original feature film.
"It had to have snakes, but the rolling ball was at the top of my list," said Baxter. "How were we going to do that? One day I was sitting in a car wash where you put your car in neutral. You think maybe your car is in drive, but the room is moving around you. I figured 'there is the answer to our problem.' Sometimes the best ideas are around you and you just need to look at them in a magical way."
From commemorating the opening year with 1,995 skulls in the Skull Room to developing their own ancient script called "Maraglyphics," the Imagineers' details bring the adventures of Dr. Indiana Jones to life.
