We are planning to be down Aug 15-23. 3 adults, 3 kids. Looking for a 2 or 3br villa on premise that won't break the bank but is still nice. Am I crazy? Better to just go off property? Any advice most appreciated (kids ages are 10, 8 and 4). Thanks!

Here is where we stayed 2 years ago. (Off-property).

We went with friends (another family of four), and split the cost in 1/2 and paid $450.

We've done on-property value (3x), moderate (1x), deluxe resorts (2x) and Shades of Green (military resort, 3x) and this house was our first time off-property and we loved it!

Yes we don't get Extra Magic Hours and we have to drive (10 minutes), but we couldn't beat the price and amenities (we split it cost in 1/2 with our friends).

We've done WDW various ways and this was the best on our wallet and we felt it was a greater value.

2 masters and 2 bedrooms both with twin beds, 4 baths, laundry, garage converted to game room, private pool and hot tub. Everything was in perfect working order and there is a gas grill for an extra fee.

Walmart, Walgreens, CVS and a 1-2-3 Dollar store are within 5 minutes.

The owner Qian, was wonderful to work with and we hope to rebook the same house when we go back in the next 2 years:

Late August is one of WDW's least expensive times of the year. Still, any Disney 2-bedroom villa will break most people's bank. The least expensive I could find was at Disney's Old Key West (OKW) and Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge (AKL). Rack rates (i.e. non-discounted rates) are about $700/night for your nights.

Is a discount possible? Maybe but even if Disney offers one, those rooms will still be about $500/night.

IMO, your best pseudo-onsite option is Wyndham Bonnet Creek (WBC). WBC is located next to Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort. For the nights you're looking for, you should be able to find a 2-bedroom condo (sleeps 8) on eBay for around $100/night.

Rent DVC points.

Checking the price through one of the rental broker websites (David's at www.dvcbyrequest.com), for the dates that you gave (8 nights) in a two-bedroom at Old Key West is $4438. Renting that direct through Disney (if no discounts) would be $5588. Though admittedly if you could get something like a 25% discount rate on that price, it would be cheaper than renting DVC ($4191)

As an alternative to a villa you could check out the Fort Wilderness Cabins. They are usually more moderately priced than the deluxe villas. Although, I do believe they only have one separate bedroom outside of the main room. However, they do sleep 6, and they have full kitchens. We've enjoyed them in the past.

On site I would go with Bonnet Creek. I love the cabins at FW, but with one bathroom it can get cramped. Off site I would recommend Grand Beach resort. It is less than 5 minutes from Disney property. You can get 3 bedroom (2 king beds and 2 twin) 3 bath with full kitchen, laundry, large living area and screened porch for cheap. I've stayed here 5 times in the last 2 years and have never paid more than 150 a night. There are 2 pools at the resort. It is part of a timeshare, but they don't hassle you too much. Kindly tell them no at check in and again on your check out day and you are good to go.
