Does anyone know of airlines giving price breaks to people who have had a family member injured seriously? I ask because my father wrecked his motorcycle in Florida and was run over by another member of his bike club.He is in ICU in Orlando Regional Hospital. I just know that usually if you buy a ticket at a last minute they tend to be pricey.Does anyone have any ideas or suggestion? Being 1000 miles from him makes me feel somewhat helpless and he has a long road ahead of him and I want to be there to help him.

My best advice would be to call a few airlines directly and see if there's anything they can do for you, particularly any airline you might have a frequent flier program with. Good luck, and I hope your father gets better soon!

Unfortunately they don't give you a break for illness, injury or death. In mid December my mother was admitted to Fawcett Hospital in Port Charlotte Fla and her situation became life threating very quickly (she was on life support etc.) I got a last minute flight but paid approx $250 one way (from New Jersey). Over the next 3 months I flew back and forth every few weeks always at the last minute because her illness was like a roller coaster, each time I paid $300-$450 one way( I always flew out the same day I made the reservation). Coming home was a bit cheaper because I would stay for 2 weeks and usually knew at least a few days ahead when I was going home. On March 14th she passed away and the flight (even with 24+ hours notice) would have cost me $508 round trip per person. My hubby and I decided to drive because the cost was just too much for our family of 4. The airlines told us that they used to give a 10-20% discount for funerals and you needed to provid them with the funeral home info. but, they stopped giving the discount a few months or so ago. I hope your dad makes a speedy recovery, he and your family will be in my prayers.

Thank you guys for your responses. I hate this helpless feeling I have being so far from him but at least I have the hospital on speed dial and they told me today he is improving but will be in ICU for another few days. I will check around and see what my best option is.

Some airlines still do. They might be more expensive than what you could get otherwise through another airline (Airtran) or that same airline from a sale.

You might really check into Airtran. I live in Indy, too, and we planned a last minute trip to Orlando in January and booked tix the day before we left at $118, round trip. If flying out of Chicago is a possibility, check direct flights out of there too, as more flights and airlines would be options for you.
