Advanced Interships - A plethora of questions

I'm going to get right to the point here.

  1. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Advanced Internships are at the parks/resorts, but backstage?
  2. The Fall internships, anyone know what months its in? (eg. June-Dec, or July-Dec..?)
  3. Has anyone here done the Information Technology internship or know what that is like? Will I be stuck behind a desk?
  4. Are you placed at and part/resort they please, like the college program? Or can you choose where?
  5. What is the pay?
  6. If you apply while you still are in college, but graduate before the internship starts, are you still elligible? For example, apply in January, Graduate in May, internship starts in June.
If I think of anything else, I'll post. But THANKS

Some are backstage, but just as many are onstage such as the Management positions.
  2. The Fall internships, anyone know what months its in? (eg. June-Dec, or July-Dec..?)

    Jan-Jun and Aug-Jan
  3. Has anyone here done the Information Technology internship or know what that is like? Will I be stuck behind a desk?

I have no idea, but I assume that role would be mostly in an office but there is probably some traveling around to fix/install things.
  4. Are you placed at and part/resort they please, like the college program? Or can you choose where?

No idea; likely they place you unless it's a position where they have many roles available like Operations Management where they may ask you if you have a park preferance.
  5. What is the pay?

    From what I hear $7-13/hr.
  6. If you apply while you still are in college, but graduate before the internship starts, are you still elligible? For example, apply in January, Graduate in May, internship starts in June.

I know people who've done it the semester and even 2 semesters after they graduate. I graduate in December and I applied for the Spring A.I.'s.

If you're not a CP alum, then absolutely yes. I haven't met anyone yet since I've been here that's not a CP alum and on the A.I.
If you're a CP, it's simply based on demand. I can only hope it's "easy" to get, but I seriously doubt it is.

Anyone can get them. They do consider everyone that applies. However, they do give preference to former WDWCP and former Walt Disney Company Cast Members.

Coooooool good thing I'm a former CP! (hey, summer still counts!)

Anyways one last question I just thought of. Are the hours for these internships your typical 9-5? Or are they crazy like the college program? (2-10,11-7...)

I'm not a morning person :)

Again, I'm sure it varies by the position. People who work backstage may only need to be there 9-5. But onstage people like managers need to be there all hours the park is open and, from what the daily newsletter says, there is a morning, afternoon, and night manager (in operations, at least).

Some days they drop the midmanager, and its just open and close.

Even backstage can be a whole range of hours. When I did my A.I. in deployment at WOD, My schedule could have started as early as 7AM and ended as late as 1AM.

So when your a management intern, like out in the park kind, what are you doing?? Are you pretty much the managers helper? And this could be an attractions, characters, or custodial manager, right?

Nope, you're a manager, not a helper. You're THE manager of those cast members and that particular area. You report to the Area manager just like all of the GSMs (before you ask, that's Guest Service Manager). That's one great thing about Professional Internships here at Disney, is that they really put faith in you and give you quite a bit of responsibility.

I have a question. I'm not even thinking about doing an advanced internship yet since I still have a couple years left, but I was wondering, do they still let advanced interns (or professional interns now) stay in the college program housing like vista and chatham?

I was an IT intern in the summer of 2000. Will you be stuck behind a desk? Depends really on where you will be working and what you will be doing. I worked in support of an upgrade to an HR database system and once we went live with the system I spent more time answering/solving trouble tickets out on property than I did at my office. Others spent most of their time at their desk.

Choice wasn't an option when I did it. Things may be different now though.

What is the pay?
This depends on your experience (if you have any) and what year you are in college. I got paid $15/hr and I was a junior at the time. Someone here mentioned a range that started at $7/hr and went as high as $13/hr -- again things may have changed -- but I really doubt that is the case with an IT intern. Perhaps other internships but not one in the IT field.

There's also a common misconception that you absolutely have to do the college program prior to doing a professional internship. That is not the case (or again I should say *was* not the case when I did it). I never did the college program and neither did ANY of the other IT interns that I spoke with that summer and there were quite a few of us. I could understand that being a pre-requisite for a managerial position in the parks. Makes perfect sense that experience working in the parks would be benefecial to someone working in a managerial position. But experience in the college program would probably mean very little in helping you in your job as an IT intern.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I had a blast that summer. Good luck in your pursuits.

Their housing as of last year were very nice new apartments near the Millenia Mall. Not in Chatham/Vista.

Wow thanks for all the replies. I'm really debating between a Management or IT internship... I have no idea. Of course they don't start offering them until December so I have time :)

That would be cool if I could manage the people I worked with over the summer :D hah..

Were you stationed in a specific park or would you have to go anywhere on property when needed?

Hey!
I just got an advanced internship too. I'm really excited, especially since this is the first time working for Disney...
I'll be at Northbridge...anyone else there?
I'm working as a graphic designer...anyone have any info?

Thanks
Josh

So you need to be a CP alum to get in easier? Is that true for all positions? I was under the impression that they looked more at the credentials listed for the job description. (I'm hoping to apply for the MEngr. prointernship, but I am aware that they stress expertise in upperlevel course material)

Once they offer them check 'em out on the site and see the requirements. Most of the time it would say "not required but suggested" or something.
