Adult at age 10?

Even though it would be nice to see the adult age change to a little higher like maybe 13, at least they go by age and not height. One local amusement park near me considers anyone over 48" an adult. A few years ago I was processing my season pass and there was a family in front of me with a kid who bought season pass vouchers at the end of the previous season (since they are cheaper then). When they went to process the passes he had grown to over 48" and had to be upgraded to an adult pass at age 5. The parents were not happy

Now that would stink....but I am pretty sure that is how our local theme park does it as well. My girls are short in height so we might have been able to squeeze past 9. lol

If dining funds are going to be tight take a good look at mousesavers.com for some good tips. Where are you staying? Are you driving or flying? Either way we always take one suitcase full of snacks and treats. I go to our bakery outlet store and buy the mini-muffins, granola bars, protein bars...things we can grab and go for breakfast. Then there are a lot of great counter service locations that offer 'better' dining options. Seasons is my favorite and I always get a kids meal when we eat at Seasons so I can split a treat with my husband.

If you do splurge for a character meal you could opt for breakfast or a late lunch for the cheaper prices. Another option you might consider at sitdown meals would be to order an appetizer for your meal instead of ordering off of the kids menu. When our girls were younger and couldn't eat a full meal they would sometimes order an appetizer as their meal because they didn't want hamburgers, chicken nuggest or pizza. My girls have never been 'kids meal' kids..but as a mom I made them eat whatever I fixed for the family...so nuggets and hotdogs were never an option at home.

I know it stinks that 10 is an adult...but try to stay positive and don't let it ruin your vacation. Plan accordingly and enjoy your time with your daughter. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for the info. Never thought of the appetizer. I already have a plan to bring breakfast and snacks down because southwest lets you have 2 bags free. And I do know how to eat cheaply at Disney, we have done it before. I guess it is the extras that are throwing me this year, like the character meals and some of the other things like pirates and pals or horseback riding. These are things we have never done before and thought would be fun but darn that extra money for her being an adult. I know it's Disney and I should just suck it up. lol We will still have fun. Guess I need to move on to the budget thread and find out how to earn some extra money before we go!

This is the reason why we won't be using the DDP for our next trip (our kiddo turns 10 two months before our WDW trip). More often than not, my son doesn't eat all of a kid's portion much less an adult portion, so it doesn't make sense for us to buy the dining package again. We'll probably still do a few of the buffets that my wife likes so we'll have to pay for 3 adults there, but otherwise, we'll order off the kid's menu. Not using DDP will probably help us eat less too! :)

Totally understandable, however, one has to realize that Disney cannot have a program for every scenario that might come up. They have probably done a study and determined that from that age up, kids tend to consume like an adult. At least it's fair, you've reached the age of 10 you pay the higher price and everyone 10 and above has too.

I doubt they did it based on any study of how much they consume. Look at every restaurant in the country that has kids meals and 99% of them have the age of a kids meal at 12.

Now considering how nasty the kids meals are at Disney I would personally not even waste my money on them. I learned long ago that my kids are better off with me simply ordering them something off the adult menu that they will east than and paying less for a meal they wont eat and then having to get them snacks later because they are hungry.

The cutoff is 9? Just tell them the child is 9. Kids don't have ID's do they? As far as food, I see adults order kids meals. I'd just split a regular meal with the child.

My daughter will be turning 11 while we are down there, I wouldn't lie about her age anyway. Also, you can't split a character meal. That is the only meal I am upset about, her being an adult makes the meal almost the same price as a ticket to the park.

If I had a child that did everything an adult did and ate a descent amount like an adult they should be paying adult prices I suppose,

Go for breakfast then. It is cheaper.

Why on earth would anybody think twice about lying? Especially if the child is only 10. It's hardly the crime of the century.
I don't lie because I don't want my kids to learn its okay to lie to get your way or cheat the system. It istechnically stalling on those park ticket. It may not be much but. Wouldn't let my kid take pencil from the store. That costs a lot less then the difference between a child and adult ticket. I would have to get my kid to lie too. I'm not going to ask my kids to lie for me.

With a character meal, you're not paying for the food as much as the entertainment.

I understand that. However, it's not like it's a dinner show, it is a few characters moving around table to table. $100 for 2 people is crazy and yet I will spend it and this is why they get away with it because for all the people that won't be able to pay there is always someone who will. I think that if it wasn't her birthday though I probably would have not done it.

Bit preachy that.
Of course it's preachy. Many see it as a morality issue. You learn to lie about the little things and you end up spending your life lying about everything when you think it is to your advantage. Preaching morality in this day and age is a good thing whether one believes that to be true or not. One of the reasons that we all lose so many good things is because it has become acceptable to "cheat the system" by whatever means we find doable. I guess we get what we deserve.

I am confused.. what is the problem with saying my child is 9 and they are 10? If it saves a couple of bucks I am saying my child is 9.
At some point some mid-level executive eyeing a promotion will realize that there is potential revenue being lost by people not being honest about ages. In response, he will sell Walt Disney World on some cumbersome means of verifying ages that will be a burden for all of us.
