ADR question

The family (myself wife son6 and daughter3) are going this Sept. with another couple. Well we found out the other couple might not be able to go now since she is losing her job. Well my question is this: We know where we want to set our ADR, but if I make them for 6 and they can't go how hard will it be to change the reservations from 6 to 4? Some of the places we want are going to be hard to get like CRT and Le Cellier, so I don't want to miss them and would not want to take up 2 more spots then needed and screw someone else out of the opportunity to be there either. I plan on setting it for 6 and will wait and see about them. IF they can't go on the trip can I make a post for 2 others to join us?

Typically going down in number is not too much of an issue. In the case of CRT you are required to secure with a CC so you will definitely not forget to cancel if they cant make it.

On my trip a few weeks ago, all of our ADRs had been made for 4 adults because two other people were originally going with us. They eventually decided not to go, leaving just the two of us.
Apart from our dinner at Le Cellier where we invited along friends that live in the area to join us, when we checked in and they read off "4 adults" from the screen, I just responded that we'd only be 2 for the meal. They made a note of it, and it was no problem at all. Most times we were even seated at a table for 2.

Book your ADRs for what you need NOW.

If your travelling companions cannot go, contact reservations and amend your bookings to 4 thus releasing the two spaces which may allow someone else to book

Make the ADRs for 6 and let them know when you check in that you're down to 4 for the evening. If you call and ask to reduce to 4 they will force you to re-book which will likely result in a different time or no availability. Every time we have had to reduce and called to let them know, we've been told to do this, because we would otherwise lose the reservation altogether. I'm not sure about CRT, but we had 2 less for our Cali Grill ADR (also have to provide a CC number) and were told that as long as someone from the group showed up, regardless of the number, the card would not be charged.
