Activity on River Country and old Discovery Island

On Sunday, October 28, I was taking a water mouse out on Bay Lake. We cruised by River Country and I was amazed to see people and boats on the dock that used to service this old water park. On the dock they were loading a boat with many silver metal crates. There was also another group of materials waiting to be loaded which looked exactly like the firework launching pipes I see on the barges in the World Showcase lagoon.

I then cruised around to the old Discovery Island docks and found similar activity. They were off loading another boat with many of the same silver crates. No fireworks had made it over there yet.

Does anybody have any idea what this activity is all about? I have never seen activity on either of these docks before. My thought is that either they were setting up the island as a secondary firework launch site (seems awfully far from the MK for that) or maybe starting the pirates refurb of the island that has been rumored for a while now.

Thanks,
B:wave:

I would love to think that they're finally gonna reopen river country, but sadly, i am well aware that is just a pipe dream, as for the pirates taking over river country? it can probably work, if done right, but to be quite honest i'm kind of tired of the pirates taking over like pixar, enough with the pirates already! i even heard they were trying to take out the swiss family tree house to replace it with a pirate ship,i reeeeally hope that doesnt happen, i mean its "adventureland", not "pirate land" if they want to add something, GREAT! but they shouldnt have to take something out in order to put something in, mk has more than enough room to place a walk-thru pirate ship

isn't Discovery Island a wildlife refuge?

Didn't Disney have Discovery Island declared a wildlife refuge years ago? If so, then they are probably very limited as to what they can do there. And I doubt launching fireworks would be very compatible with wildlife! :dazzle:

Mystery solved:

Someone had a party on the Ft. Wilderness beach that night and had a special fireworks show. We had to close that dock for about a hour while they fired the fireworks, and prior to & after that, we had to go north of Discovery Island to avoid the barges.

So I take it you work on one of the boats cruising Bay Lake and SSL?

Interesting. Does this happen often?

It happens every now and then. One occured when I visited on July 3rd. It's really kinda nifty because anyone at FW can see it, so it's like you get two fireworks shows for....free. :D
