Abbreviations

Im really tired of having to decrypt messeges on these forums. I know theres a list somewhere to check, I know some of you are just so used to them that you dont even think of it when you use them but for me at least when i start seeing posts with tons abbreviations it really drives me nuts.

Abbreviations were created so that a person doesnt have to type or write out something long hand multiple times, but you are at least supposed to have written it once thus leaving a reference to what you are abbreviating, and from then on you would abbreviate so to save time, but if you dont ever write it out longhand to begin with anyone who isnt fluent in Disney abbreviations or any abbreviations for that matter would be completely lost on the subject matter.

Once you see an abbreviation, usually it's Disney themed and not very hard to comprehend.

Initialisms are part of nearly every internet forum. If you chose to participate in a particular forum it is best just to learn the vernacular.

I just dont see the need sometimes, I understand its a sort of internet forum"language" but we arent on typewriters anymore, spend another second typing and it may draw in more people into the topic. I for one just skip over threads that lead off with a chain of letters I dont understand, which then leaves me out of the discussion.

My point in making this thread is not to complain, but just to remind some of the people who that have been on here for quite some time there are a lot of us that have no idea what some of you are talking about sometimes.

The really bad part is that a lot of bad spellers/typists use acronyms that are non-existent! Like PORQ or THM or IASM. Or they throw in some Universal acronyms in a Disneyworld forum. Arrrgggghhh.

Yeah, some are confusing. I had to look up DAK. Otherwise, how would I ever have figured out it meant Deutsche Afrika Korps?

I'm an IT professional, but I work at a company where the majority of the employees are engineers. We recently had a change in management, and the new management now puts out a weekly report that has a mess of engineering terms. Some of the non-IT managers asked the management to make this report easier to read - management replied by saying that since the majority of the company were engineers, that we were supposed to adapt and learn the terms.

I have the feeling that if I went to any other engineering firm that I would face the same challenge - just as you do with ANY Disney forum. I'm sure that if I developed an interest in Nascar or baking or gardening or medicine etc that no matter what forum I visited I would need to learn their terms.

Skipping over the threads with the abbreviations is only harming yourself - visit the pages I linked to and possibly bookmark them or print them out. Give yourself a few weeks of reading the posts and I am sure that you will learn.
