A Wooden Coaster in WDW?

I don't know anything about Outlaw Run, but I steer clear of wooden coasters. Wooden coasters = pain....or.... = WDW's Space Mountain. No thank you.

I live really close to Silverdollar City. Outlaw Run is scheduled to be open in the spring. Its not a 100% traditional wooden coaster, it actually runs on steel in the majority of the structure masked by a wooded facade. It does have a huge barrel run and pretty steep sides. Looks pretty amazing. If everything goes right I can be on the employee tests (Im not an employee of SDC). here is an animated video of the coaster.

I may be mistaken but I believe that the planned Excavator rollercoaster for Dinoland was going to be a wooden coaster.

Here's the thing. Outlaw Run cost $10 million. Disney could build a coaster just like it with unbelievable themeing for what $50 mil? Outlaw Run started construction in February and when I was at SDC last week they are almost done with the whole thing. They are finishing up loading/unloading and some guest paving and themeing (however no where near what Disney could do). Ride testing starts in February (have to wait due to temperatures) with employee testing in March/April and open to guests in April/May.

Seriously... Why can't a company like Disney build an attraction like this. I don't think they have anything anywhere on the level as this.

I know they got the queue building done in a week and only took 5 months for the whole ride to be done. Now there doing pathway and bridge work to get there. Ok thread drift over:)

i would figure a nice out and back style "wood" looking coaster like outlaw run to ensure the smooth operation and ride quality ...while also showcasing what makes wooden coasters fun. That is the drops and wide helix's...im surprised you all mentioned frointierland when settlers went west they found wooden roller coasters? interesting...;) i would hazard the liberty square area/tom sawer island since wooden roller coasters are a huge part of american amusement culture. if they used an out and back they could wrap the majority of the ride out and behind that area since obviously theres no room for them to just plop down a coaster.

and if they use steel it wont have the noise that somehow destroys the ambiance.

Not sure exacttly where a wooden coaster would fit in WDW  Don't really like them though as they are too jarring I find. California Screamin' at DCA is the closest you will get to a 'wooden' coaster at a Disney Park :p Although I belive one was planned for Dinoland in Animal Kingdom called the Excavator or something.

Yes, it has been considered. The Excavator, a coaster planned for Disney's Animal Kingdom.

The humidity in Florida is a huge problem for wooden coasters in Florida. Just ask Busch Gardens.
This.^^^^
Wood coasters in a good environment go through a good bit of swelling and contracting requiring a large ammount of maintenance. When you put them in an environment when in rains 120 +/- days per year and the humidity swings as much as 50 points throughout the year they become a nightmare.

WDW would be much better off building a faux wooden coaster like California Screamin.

Outlaw Run is not wood styled. The tracks are steel, but the structure itself is still wood. Not steel with wood paneling or wood added on for show. All of that wood would still have to deal with the environment.

Liberty Square is not a generic celebration of Americana. It is tied to a time period and directly links to Frontierland, offering a east-west chronological and geographic movement through American expansion.

There are some amazing wooden coasters out there, and yes the new generation are extremely smooth. El Toro, Outlaw Run, The Voyage, Thunderhead. These are all fantastic, and the themeing really wouldnt be terribly difficult. I vote yay for this idea.

The thing is that wooden coasters are made now according to if it fits the environment of the park outlaw run fits perfectly in the landscape of Silver Dollar City is there any location at Disney where this could work?

As long as we are throwing out great ideas that will never happen, how bout this? A B&M flying coaster, see Manta, Air, Montu, etc, themed as a Peter Pan rollercoaster. That would be awesome, to fly over fantasyland on a B&M flyer!!!!!

These are all good ideas, and knowing Disney, they'd do a stellar job with theme & story to these rides rather than just steel track looping over landscape at random.

However, you're right about these ideas never happening. WDW doesn't go the extreme thrill route. The original Alien Encounter had to be revamped & scaled/stitched back due to massive parental complaints of it being too frightening for children. Even RnRC's opening had a bit of controversy because it (*gasp* heavens no!) went upside down. If anything, Disneyland Paris or Tokyo DisneySea would be more likely to get an Outlaw Run type of ride (though highly doubtful). But WDW...forgettaboutit. Not the type of attraction their target audience could handle.

(And yes...Outlaw Run does look amazing. I might have to make a trip out to MO next summer.)

If you want to go to a pretty good themed park, with good thrill rides, Dollywood is it. Great themeing, arguably better service than Disney, and amazing food. Plus they have some amazing amazing rides. Thunderhead is one of the best wooden coasters in the world, Tennessee Tornado is an Arrow looping gem, Mystery Mine is like nothing you have ridden before, and Wild Eagle is brilliant!!! Plus other rides like Sidewinder, Grizzly Falls, and Barstormer are great as well. Lots of family rides and shows to boot. Definately a great park!

I would ride this in a split second. Maybe Disney could pipe some western music in to the seats and call it a day.
