A ship nicknamed DOC

I heard a story many years ago that I’m sure some of you can verify or refute.

The story goes that Walt and Lillian Disney were asked to commission a ship of the U.S. Navy during, or right before, World War II. The ship was a Destroyer Tender, a base /repair ship for Destroyers and Destroyer Squadrons, listed as an AD on the naval registry.

At the commissioning ceremony they broke the bottle of champagne etc and as part of his speech Walt stated “that as this ship will fix other ships it should be call “Doc.” For the entire time the ship was in commission, which I was told was into the 1970’s, the ship bore a painting of the dwarf Doc on its funnel.

Is this true?

What was the ship?

Thank You
