A Ride For A Modern Fantasyland

This ride would be the spiritual successor to the classic Fantasyland dark rides featuring Snow White, Pinocchio, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Sleeping Beauty all in one ride. It would be an E-ticket for a modern park that wanted a ride to focus on the classics, but with an updated ride system instead of the one used in the 1950s. The ride type would be trackless and feel like a mixture of the Great Movie Ride, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, and Philharmagic. It would start as a seemingly dry, narrated exploration of Walt Disney’s life before magically jumping into scenes from the classic movies. Each of the six movies listed would be represented by one scene, typically the one where its most recognizable song plays. The vehicles could even take on a Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway approach by being an actual train before they break apart in the ride to signify Walt’s love of trains. If this seems like reaching which it probably is then the vehicles could just be disguised as normal omnimover trains a guest would expect in a classic educational ride like those found in Journey into Imagination.

After boarding your ride vehicles you would embark on what seems to be an educational ride based on Walt's life and legacy. You would pass by lots of Walt memorabilia such as a recreation of his office while a calmly narrator describes what you're seeing and gives you a history lesson. One of the scenes you would pass by would be a giant illustration of the evolution of Mickey Mouse from Steamboat Willie, classic Mickey, and Sorcerer Mickey. The Sorcerer Mickey that you see would jump off the page (still 2D though) using projection technology (???) and walk alongside your vehicles to follow you into the next room. While the narrator starts talking about classic animated films in here, Sorcerer Mickey would wink and open a portal into the world of animation.

Your vehicles would then go off the fake track you were following and reveal themselves to be trackless. You would find yourself in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Walt Disney’s first animated feature length film. I would say the most iconic song from this movie is Heigh-Ho, but the scene that accompanies this song would not work well to represent Snow White as a whole because it doesn’t include the princess. So instead I went with the scene that uses the Silly Song. After leaving Mickey you would enter the woods at night through the dwarves’ vacant mine. Jewels would be shining around you and there could be small gags of animals playing with the minecarts, but the real focus would be of the dwarves' cottage that you would be directly facing. Silly Song sounds like it’s playing inside while many animals are watching through the windows . Two of the vehicles would head straight into the cottage while the other two would explore outside first. If you are in one of the two cars that stay outside first you would see the evil queen in her old hag disguise arrive on her boat and maybe even offer you an apple. Once you go into the cottage your vehicles would dance alongside Snow White and the seven dwarves while they sing their song. Then the sets of vehicles would switch and experience the opposite scene. All four vehicles would then make their way back through the cottage and exit on the opposite side of it. In the hallway of the cottage while you are funneling out of it would be LED lights and other “magic” effects to signify your transition into the next movie. This would happen between each scene.

The transition from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves to Pinocchio would be seamless as the backside of the cottage you just exited from would suddenly be the workshop and home of Geppetto. You would find yourself in the final scene of Pinocchio where When You Wish Upon A Star would be playing. Although this scene is very slow and Pinocchio has more exciting scenes, this song is the most iconic of all the songs I picked for this ride and would need to be featured. Through the windows of the workshop which would be enlarged for the sake of this ride would be Geppetto and Pinocchio celebrating that he is now a real boy. Inside all of his clocks and music boxes would be chiming like they do in the movie. On a different window sill, Jiminy Cricket would also be celebrating the conscience he receives in this scene. Opposite of the workshop would be a massive diorama of an alpine village like the one shown at the end of the movie. Above you would be a small planetarium with stars glistening in the night sky. The Blue Fairy would at first appear in the scene but then disappear using the Pepper's ghost effect. Her other form, the wishing star, would then appear shining the brightest in the planetarium above. Your vehicles would sway side to side in this very calming and relaxing scene.

Another easy transition would take place as you go from the outdoors at night time from Pinocchio into the same from Cinderella for the big transformation scene. You would enter a courtyard with a surrounding pumpkin patch with a giant pumpkin in the middle of it. The Fairy Godmother in the center of the room would begin to sing Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo as the pumpkin transforms into a carriage. This could happen using either a Pepper's ghost effect, having the pumpkin on a rotating belt to have it switch out with a carriage during a short period of darkness, or some other effect to achieve this transformation. The song would continue to be sung as you watch Cinderella’s dress change as well. This effect could easily be done by using the Pepper's ghost effect in the same way it was used for the Beast’s transition in Tokyo. The mice, horse, and dog could be looking with awe at all of the transitions, but I don’t think it’s necessary or even really possible to have them change too.

Moving on to Alice in Wonderland you would find yourself in the Very Merry Unbirthday scene. This scene would have the table at the center and your vehicles would circle and dance around this centerpiece. You would be surrounded by manicured hedges and the strange forest from the movie. Lanterns above you would illuminate the scene. The Mad Hatter and March Hare would perform this song while Alice claps along. Every teapot of the table would bounce around as well. Then she would blow out her candle on the cake which would send fireworks to project on the ceiling above you, sending you on your way out of this scene.

You would head into London for the Peter Pan portion of this ride while You Can Fly starts to play. This is the most iconic part of Peter Pan and definitely the scene I want to use, but I’m struggling with the execution. Trackless vehicles can’t fly, but guests would want to fly alongside Peter Pan, not just watch him from the ground. How I have the scene right now is to emerge from Alice in Wonderland into the Darling nursery. You would then emerge onto the rooftops of London. Then the two sets of vehicles could take different paths on top of the roofs. Peter, Wendy, John, Michael, and Tinkerbell would be flying above you somehow. Nana would be flying too, but in the manner she does in the movie, waving to guests. I would like the vehicles to feel like they are flying in some way, but I don’t think that is possible. If anyone has any ideas on improving this scene please do.

Moving on into the sixth and final movie, you would enter the world of Sleeping Beauty. Heading down a narrow transition hallway you would be surrounded by woods and hear the instrumentals of Once Upon a Dream, believing this is the scene you are entering. Once all four vehicles emerge (there would be two hallways to make this process quicker) you would instead be greeted with a giant animatronic Maleficent in her dragon form. Instead of experiencing a calming song from the movie like you are used to at this point, you are thrown right in the fight. Thorns surround you as you watch Prince Phillip fight Maleficent with the help of the three fairies. Chaos ensues as the vehicles dart around as if they’ve been sent into a frenzy. Each one gets a turn to be up close with the dragon animatronic like she wants you now. Sorcerer Mickey appears magically in the scene to rescue the riders since it was his magic that got youhere. You feel him pull you out of the scene like in Rise of the Resistance when Kylo force pulls you in and you are whisked out of the scene.

Sorcerer Mickey returns to a different painting in the museum setting that replicates where you began. The narrator makes a final speech on Walt’s legacy as your vehicles return back to the orderly line they started in as if you were here the whole time. This is very clearly a first draft so any thoughts/criticism would be very helpful!

How would you tweak this idea to make it a better ride? I'm not entirely satisfied with this and would love to see what other people do with this concept!

Mainly the Peter Pan portion; I really don't know how to go about that scene. I also don't know if sorcerer mickey letting you in this "world of animation" works in a narrative sense.
I think the sorcerer Mickey element does work well as a transition point!

In terms of Peter Pan I can see why that might be a little difficult to conceptualize because it's been done in most of the renditions of Peter Pan's Flight, what if you went with another IP scene instead of Peter Pan?

If your going for classic animation, may I mention 101 Dalmatians?? It’s a great story with great characters and is very cute and the littles will love it. I also recommend jungle book. The songs make you wanna move, the characters are fun and you could rlly tell the story well

I’d prefer a Renaissance-based selection; the Renaissance films are under-represented in this category. We have TLM and BATB, yes, but Aladdin is a flat ride, TLK has some shows, and the rest have even less. The ride is also too lighthearted, with the only intense content being the start and the end, which is what a lot of people complain about concerning the recent rides like TLM’s ride. The original dark rides could be really frightening. I’d prefer a successor to those; imagine the ride ending with Frollo about to strike down the riders before Mickey saves you.
