I'm having a Sweet 16 Party for my daughter. I've rented a hall and I have a band lined up. The band won the battle of the bands held at her High school, so they are popular. The hall won't let me serve actual food, so I was going to put out bowls of snacks and have individual bottles of soda for the kids. Can you please give me some ideas to help make this party the best ever? Thanks

I wish I could help..I'm almost 16...but chances, are I'm radically different from most of the party guests. I mean, I'd have my party tuned to Disney music and play "Pin the tail on Brer Fox"...

I know that teenagers like candy, parties, dancing, social games (like board games and such)...soda... I think a get together would be great and enough usually...

But it's VERY sweet of you! Congratulations to your daughter!! :)

As for something VERY special and different, I'll ask my friends at school tomorrow. :)

Thanks, I am planning on having bowls of candy and snacks. My daughter looked at me funny when I suggested games. :( She is not big on Disney like her mother is. She likes music like Lincoln Park and Good Charlotte and No Doubt.

Let me know what your friends say, I really want to make sure it's the social event of the year.

I'm not a teen but it hasn't been too long-

A lot of kids won't go for organized games. In small groups they probably would, but with a lot of people they would probably rather just goof off. The band is a good idea. Really I think good music and good food (even if only snacks) are the main things.

And try to keep whatever adults may be around from trying to act like 16 year olds

She has close to 80 kids on her invite list. I guess you're right about the games. I was going to do something like how well do you know Ashley and give away Cd's. But my husband and daughter kind of shot me down on that idea.

You mean I should leave hubby at home then huh? LOL!
Thanks Erika!

I'm not a teen anymore, but I have some ideas from a party I went to when I was 17 that I thought was the most fun a kid my age could (legally) have.

My suggestions are as follows:

1) Drawings for prizes. Like CDs or other things teenagers these days like. Raffle them off towards the end of the night, but keep the things on display so they get excited for the drawing.

2) A mini casino. You can buy decks of cards and poker chips rather cheap, like a dollar each, and have adults deal out games of poker and blackjack, etc, for chips that can go towards prizes at the end of the night.

3) Pop and snacks of all kinds. We had every kind of chip and salty snack you can buy, and every kind of pop, too. We also had tons of gummy type snacks, as well as cakes and cup cakes, too. We all were amazed, it was like going to 7-11 and eating everything there for free!

4) A band is nice, but a DJ is more fun. Kids can request and dance and goof off to the music, music they picked and that they like to dance to. We all got a kick out of the DJ, too. He would play whatever we wanted, and that was beyond great.

Have fun! Hope I was helpful!!!

Sweet 16's. There so much fun! Ive been to three this year. Teens juss like chips pretxles n candy. We are pretty basic people! oh and just remember we tend to dance, well, a lil provoctivly :o So dont get surpirsed if you see that non-scnse. My friends' parents were shocked..so we made them leave! hehe

IMO, all you need is a good venue, good music and good food. They'll sort the rest out themselves ;) If you try and organise too much, then they will feel in a way that they are being organised around. In my experience, just give us the basics and let us do the rest! :D

Yep, thats true. Just let them be. Organize the party, but when the party is going on, try and stay out of their hair (as long as nothing illegal is happening). She is 16, and she will want to feel independant. Let her be, for that night. It's a party, afterall!

Thanks everyone for the responses. I think I have a good idea of what to do now. I like the raffle idea. I am planning on having a vast array of junk food for the kids on hand. I appreciate all of your suggestions.

Food and music are a great mixture for a party! At least those are my 2 passions(well a side from WDW:lol: )! The raffle idea is cool too! Sounds like it'll be fun!

sounds like a great plan, Pam! and it's SO sweet of you to do this for your daughter! i agree with everyone else..the band and snacks sounds like a good plan as well as the raffle.

just curious on everyone else's thoughts here (i'm not into the main stream party type thing, i guess you could say, so i don't know what 'normal' teens look for in parties these days...other than booze, but that's definately a no-no! i wouldn't recommend it anyway) but what about a karaoke machine? they seem to be fairly popular these days... *shrugs* personally, i don't see why, but that's neither here nor there.

best of luck to ya Pam!!
