What I usually do is use a photo I have taken or a piece of clip art that I have found on the web, save it to my HD and then upload it here using the custom avatar option.

I'm also having difficulties updating my profile. Once you have it set up, is it permanently locked? Or am I missing something?

How are you accessing it to update? If you click on "User CP" near the top of any forum page, then click on "Edit Profile", you should be able to change anything in there.
