A Dining Question...

I'm just curious...

My boss knows I am Disney crazy, so she came downstairs to tell me today that her and her husband are going to WDW for their 25th Anniversary, staying at the GF and going for 10 days. With all the options on the tickets.

Needless to say, I was incredibly jealous. Anyhoo, they're leaving on Sept 1st, and she told me they got the dining plan. I said, Is it worth $80 per day for the two of you?

And she said, No, it only cost $25 per person.

She double-checked to make sure.

When did they start doing that? I was very confused...

Don't know where $25 per day came from. I think it's about $37 per day for adults, and about $13 per day for kids under 10. If they had booked in time, they could have gotten it for $0 for the time they're going. Whether it's worth the money depends - for most people it probably is, but if you're not into eating a lot, I wouldn't get it.

I haven't heard of it being $25. It is $37.99 for an adult per day.

Also, it is worth it just for the sit down meal alone. I know I've used the dining plan and found it is a value. It depends on your eating habits. Clearly from your comment you sound like you are against the dining plan.

That's what I thought! She booked through a travel agent and got it for $24.99 a day - I saw the receipt. Still confused.

I'm not against the dining plan - I think it would be very cool. But if you add it up for me, it's not worth it. I go with family, and granted, we would get a TON more food. But we rarely have appetizers, nor dessert. We're just too full from dinner. So when we looked at the numbers and I detailed and added everything up, it didn't make much sense for someone (like me) looking to save some $$.

For ex. if I went to PrimeTime 50's for Lunch and the ABC Commissary for dinner, and bought a snack, I probably would've spent $29 or $30. (Figuring $18 at PT50's and $8 for dinner and $3-4 for a snack.) Granted, if I only paid ten more dollars a day, I could get appetizers and dessert with that. But if I go for 10 days, that's $100 I could save by not getting the plan. Since I recently got my very first job out of college...needless to say I'm not paid very much.

But I completely understand the DDP and think that for anyone who doesn't mind shelling out the extra $100 to get more food, it's totally worth it. When I have money, I'll definitely do it:)

Question, did you see the total she paid for the entire vacation or an itemized receipt? Disney Travel Co doesn't usually itemize their "receipts" they list all the things included in your vacation pkg and list a total; no individual prices. If you investigate the prices and factor in taxes, you can figure out on your own what you are paying for the hotel, the tickets, DDP and anything else included in your vacation. This is puzzling, but good for her!

She did it through a travel agent who works out of her home - they've been using her for years to plan their vacations I guess. She gave them a list of prices, etc. That's why I was so surprised...glad everyone else is confused too...

Did this travel agent book the trip for your boss at a net rate or at a travel agent's rate? That is the only possible scenerio I can think of!

It just sounded that way and I understand that they way you eat, it definitely doesn't make sense to get the dining plan. If I didn't have the DDE card, I would definitely do the plan, since it is so much easier for a family to get it because then almost all your eating is paid for and you don't have to worry about penny pinching and not getting something you'd really like because of the $$'s.

It's not about "shelling out the extra $100," but whether or not it is a value or works well for your family. Generally speaking you make out rather well with the kids because the price of any character meal for dinner is either the exact price of or surpasses the price of the plan. The dining plan takes away the worry of how much is food going to cost people when they go on vacation and prepaying it helps take lots of the worry out too because it's taken care of. Since many people don't go to WDW as many times a year as we all do, it may be a trip they do once every 2-3 years or longer, they figure they want to do this trip the right way and not worry they are going to run out of money because food was so expensive.
