My hope has always been for them to refurbish the roof of the castle with actual slate tiles like they did so beautifully over at Disneyland Paris as seen here: Castle Rennovation
If you look closely back at pictures from when they were giving it the 50th paint scheme on here, bioreconstruct, and blog mickey you can see the roof is in some pretty rough shape up close so I wouldn't be surprised if they were replaced in whole.
Also one more unlikely reason (but would be amazing) is if the roofs got integrated lighting akin to the holiday roofs at Disneyland and could be activated during the new nighttime parade Starlight as the castle seems to sparkle in every piece of concept art we've seen.

Even if they just repainted them to be more matte with subtle variegation between the shingles, it'd be a big step up.
The last year or two of the Dreamlights didn't have cranes visible during the day. They used retractable cranes and only worked on the Dreamlights when guests weren't there.
@wdwmagic reported that WDW was close to bringing them back post-pandemic last year (or the year before?) but then nixed it right before it was going to happen.
