1984 VS. 2024

I thought about this the other day and it made me laugh.

The year may have not been exactly 1984 but it was very early EPCOT and it worked for the title ;)

There we were in EPCOT in the 80's and we wanted to make a dining reservation, so we walked up to one of the many Worldkey kiosks. These were touch screen CRTs where after navigating the menus would eventually connect you with a live two way closed circuit audio/video connection with a cast member to make your reservation. It was really cool for the 80's, and it worked just fine.

Fast forward to 2024. We were in Animal Kingdom and we were trying to make a lunch reservation for Tiffins using the app. Nothing worked, we went to guest services and was told to try all the normal things we do today, make sure the app is updated, reboot phone, try wifi, try cellular data, exit and go back in, keep refreshing, etc. Even the guest services person could not get it to work and after about an hour of waiting and trying, guest services suggested we walk over there and see if we can get in. We walked over, we talked to the cast member at the podium out front and was able to get a lunch reservation.

So we went from fully functional in 1984 to totally non functional in 2024

The 1984 Hydrolators became 2024 Space Elevators.
Both were equally enjoyable and the Hydrolators are really missed. The Space Elevators are more visually exciting along with being technologically more advanced and convincing while still requiring some suspension of disbelief for either of them. So I would say that based on available technology for their times both serve the same purpose.
