With Fantasmic right there -- a Villains area/attraction is a good idea in HS. It's just a little disjointed with ToT in the middle of it...
Either way, this will be an upgrade over the Cars Show -- even if just initially.

That's always been what I assumed they would do when it inevitably loses The Twilight Zone branding. I personally do not think we'll see any movement on any sort of change at all until this ToT movie comes out and they see how it does. I think that will determine how soon the Twilight Zone aspect disappears.
That said, I don't see at the moment a reality where they completely change the theme like they did in Cali unless the entire surrounding land also has a change in theme which I see as very unlikely to happen in the near future (which could be optimism but I don't think with everything else going on at the resort that changing Sunset Blvd into something else is high on the list). They would be able to take out the TZ stuff without making any significant change to the ride, and that seems way more likely an option for modern leadership to take.

I don't even really understand why they'd need to change it. All of the attraction space is clustered at the Fantasmic terminus, so there's not much benefit to re-theming the front two-thirds of it.

See I don't expect the Villains show long-term in that space. I think it's mostly a beta test for what type of experiences they will have at MK.
By the time they would re-theme ToT, the show will likely be gone or transferred to MK if mega-popular.

The front portion of the park is The Hollywood That Never Was....which is perfect... There would be no reason to change Sunset Blvd or TOT... They work perfectly in their settings, They fit the theme of the park, They are perfect placemaking for Disney's Hollywood Studios Park... Now if they change the name of the park to Disney's Adventure Park, then all bets are off, but hopefully it will remain as it is...a beautiful love letter to Hollywood and the Motion Picture Industry that made Disney a household name.

The retheme would only be because of licensing rights for Twilight Zone more than anything. Paris' storyline was altered a few years ago so if TZ ever disappeared, it would still work.

You think characters like Hades and the Queen of Hearts will be “face” characters like in other stage shows, or the usual masked costumes?

Definitely think face characters. Queen of Hearts face character has appeared a few times, particularly at a Villains After Hours at DCA, and they've got an impressive Hades face character at Oogie Boogie Bash this year
There is a section on the map that highlights attractions that Disney wants to get more people to visit. It was muppets, and is now Vacation Fun.
