ESPN, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery to launch joint sports streaming platform

It's not a bad price. But you are still not getting all football games with Amazon, peacock, Prime, etc....
This still covers a huge chunk of sporting coverage in one place. Yes there will be needs to have other services if you want everything. But that would be the case if you just went with a single service, like Peacock, etc.

Also maybe its a typo, but Amazon and Prime are the same thing. ;)

LOL, is that really cheaper than buying each streaming service seperate? I'll be shocked if this goes well.
IIRC this includes essentially streaming of everything on all the ESPN networks - unlike ESPN+ which only has select (and much fewer) games. So I don’t think it is comparable to any individual service available (I don’t think FOX has any streaming for their sports either).

You know what's funny?

It’s what has been missing from streaming. But now we are essentially back to linear.

I think it is the final death rattle of cable. Really, it's sport subscribers and boomers+ that still have cable.

For the moment at least, it is more a la carte and consumer friendly than cable was. Therefore technically cheaper if someone was just in it for the sports. But not so underpriced that all the services will be leading a loss with this model.

Remember, Venu is not for everybody.

It's aimed at people who don't have streaming for entertainment, and don't want streaming for entertainment, and would like to stop paying $85 month for cable just to watch sports because they're hardly watching any entertainment content on cable to begin with.

I could get behind an NBC, Paramount, Bruins and a tennis bundle but sadly no. And sadly I would need to get multiple streaming services.

Depends on what you are looking for. I never had an issue finding hockey games (unless they were on NHL Network, which is a WHOLE different issue). Pretty sure I've watched ESPN versions for tennis and MNF as well. Fox, it's really for football, and I get that with an antenna. I don't know, maybe it's my groups of friends, but I don't think I've ever known someone who is big enough into EVERY sport to justify something like this.

The selling point isn't "every sport." It's not like they're leading with "The Ocho" and dodge ball.

Between Disney, Fox, and WBD, there is a rather plentiful provision of a majority of major league games. It's still mostly about American football, basketball, and baseball.

I'll add in particular that ESPN and FOX are big players for college sports - this offering seems like you would get most of the big games in college football and basketball and pretty much the remainder would be available by getting an antennae for over the air CBS and NBC.

Edit: which actually gets me wondering... does this offering include the broadcasts carried exclusively on conference specific networks? i.e. BTN (owed by FOX), SECN and ACCN (owed by Disney)?

That's my point though, I don't know people who are big enough into the 4 major sports that they will watch all of them (especially games without their teams). If you are a diehard basketball fan and watch even the games that aren't your team, most likely you aren't the same way with baseball or hockey. Hockey fans openly revolt against the national coverage of the sport, and very few care about like basketball. I don't know, I'm old, and after I was down to just hockey, they have really chipped away my fandom with how they are operating the league and reporting anyways so maybe it will work and it's just me.

So how would this work for NFL games on FOX? Since they are regionalized, would you be geolocked into whatever game your local FOX affiliate carries or would it include the potential for any game FOX is carrying anywhere? I assume not since that would seem to undermine Sunday Ticket.

Well, I have no 'inside baseball' on the success of the JV. I'm just parroting the marketing. I presume they did the market research to know if they have enough potential customers at this price point to be successful. Or not... after all, WBD is involved.

And then there was the NBA venture at DS....

And Fox sold all their content generation to Disney... and are trying to rebuild content creation from scratch...

;)

Well, except for News and Sports, which is why they are part of this venture but are the only major network without their own paid streaming service (since they largely bailed from general entertainment)
