DHS Disney plans to reboot Voyage of the Little Mermaid stage show at Disney's Hollywood Studios

I saw her on stage back in the 80s in the out-of-town opening of the Broadway musical Smile... Sadly the show was not a hit...She had the lead role and sang the song "Disneyland"...about a young girl trying to escape the mundanity of an unhappy home life with dreams of Disney... Unsurprisingly after the Broadway run closed, Jodi was hired for The Little Mermaid...I don't think it was a coincidence that she was noticed by Disney executives...

Howard Ashman wrote the lyrics and book for Smile.

This looks like an excellent upgrade. From what I'm hearing, they are much more confident in this than the Villain show. But, maybe the latter will be a sleeper hit.
At 18 minutes I have no hope for the villain show. 40 would have made me much more hopeful especially with the concept as described.
I think this company throws around “Disney Legend” a bit too liberally but there’s no question about Jodi’s status. She’s a real gem. Her constant deference to the creatives and the new cast exudes class.
I've never heard anyone who's worked with her say anything bad about her. Always up for anything Disney related, and as far as I heard, absolutely jumped at being part of the hundredth anniversary film in particular.

I've been making this point elsewhere.

"Villains" just isn't a very good underlying/organizing concept. I don't really have high expectations for the show or the land as a whole.
Which I think is a large issue, because that it feels like that is the announcement that people are by far most excited about. They can miss on Monsters Inc land or Voyage of the Little Mermaid, they can't miss on Villains land. The show might be able to get by on less, but not the land.

I think they can still build a good land and attractions in the abstract -- I just think there are going to be a lot of people who don't get what they were hoping for from it and are thus disappointed. It's just way too broad a concept that encompasses wildly different characters and aesthetics.

40 minutes is pushing it. I can’t stand the FoP sanitation pre-show.

Disney used to regularly develop shows around that length or longer though, at least during the end stages of WDE and early DLE days (so 20-30 years ago). Not impossible to do that again.
I think about 20-25 minutes is the sweet spot for theme park shows. People start yawning by 30 minutes. VotLM was about 17 min and always felt truncated to me. Guessing the new one is closer to 20 min.

Depends on the show. Which depends on the writers. People certainly didn't care how long the DCA musical adaptions were (minus the AEA), but even shows like Mickey and the Wondrous Book/Magician/Magical Map were developed at 30 minutes-ish. The DCA musicals were anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Dick Tracy was 30 minutes. Big Band Beat between 25-30. I could go on. It's not a hard and fast rule by any means - just has to be a good show for people to actually sit and watch. And that's an open question these days.

18-20 minutes is too short to be meaningful (in my experience) but allows for more shows per day, as per the union agreement. Mermaid always felt like they could have added an extra 5-8 minutes and made it a better show. (Fun fact - it was designed to tour malls but never did.) It's probably the one of the two new shows I'll see without forcing myself to.

One time I let a pretty loud one rip while in the queue for Soarin’. Do I qualify?
No.
