Iconic Purple Directional Signs Being Replaced

How did they hit the sign but not the overpass? Very strange.

It is weird. Maybe the sign ripped off whatever would have come into contact with the overpass?

I imagine that after hitting the sign the truck stopped. I assume it was a truck with some kind of boom in the back and they didn't secure the boom in the lowered position.

My theory was that they backed up and turned around across the median, but this is also entirely plausible.

I still think it was a mad max style vehicle like pictured below. The turret came into contact with the sign and was sheared off. The family then proceeded to the wilderness campground and enjoyed their vacation only noticing the missing turret the next morning.

Ok… I’m done being weird now.

This makes me wonder if the large sign on I-4 how it is now when your leaving Disney somewhere after SeaWorld or Before. That sign got smashed too 😴 but less surprising as this.

That’s an older sign. Not the same shade of blue as the new signs, nor does it have the rounded corners. A few signs across property have alternate color schemes, such as the one for Bonnet Creek near Disney Springs.
correct it’s an older sign that has had the purple area changed to blue, there’s a few across property that have been changed like this. You can see this sign here below when it was purple albeit very faded.

There’s also some brand new signs in a few places that is completely the new blue and gold color scheme. The give away that it is complete new is that the back is all unpainted stainless steel, while the older signs are also painted on the back. Their poles are also blue and not the green/red like the original signs.

Finally the bonnet creek signs are completely different colors (maroon and orange) and do not feature the Mickey ear motif.

So they’re either changing their mind on completely removing the 90s directional signs and going with this hybrid look, or this is the in between for badly faded signs until the whole thing can be replaced.

They just replaced a 90’s sign in the median of Buena Vista Dr WB near the Riviera with the new design. I suspect the sign you posted is a temporary fix due to fading. CFTOD has entered a new fiscal year and I understand the signage budget was increased to $2 million, so there should be quite a few more replacements over the next year.
