You get more of the times you want by booking 30 days out. It's sometimes a real hassle trying to get all the rides you want when booking day of. Trust me I can usually ride about anything I want day of(mine train the exception) but it's really time consuming. Takes some of your enjoyment away cause your so focused on your phone.

Your best chance of scoring a highly coveted Fastpass is checking on the odd hour (11:00, 1:00, etc) as they seem to release a small quantity of them during those times. My last day there (Sunday) I was able to use this method successfuly (as a party of one.) After my prebooked @ 60 day FP (Pan, SDMT, Space) I was able to get Splash, then Frozen Ever After, Soarin and finally Spaceship Earth. Just refresh constantly when in line.

Do you always stay offsite and were they staying offsite?
I ask since its 60 days out if onsite.
I always book asap and only do day of for additional FP's.
People's plans change and based on how quickly the lines are flowing that day I believe Disney releases more times.
Also how many were in your friend's party?
Smaller parties have the advantage for snagging popular FP's the day of.
Basically its certainly possible to do but I've never gotten THE MOST popular day of like FOP and SDD.
