Haha That was a different year, but yeah, something like that. They were the only undefeated team and beat the team that beat the supposed national champions. They weren't allowed to play for that trophy though, so we'll never know what would've happened. But they get the vote in my book.

Because it's an arbitrary system that doesn't allow all members access. It's really not much different from the BCS or even than the old system of different polls picking different champions. When the teams aren't all playing each other you're gonna get some weird results. Auburn and Utah went undefeated in 2004, with neither team being given an opportunity to play for the "national championship." In 1994 Penn State went undefeated, but so did Nebraska.
