Because they are going to charge you this on top of park admission, so they need a yardstick for perceived value.

Against my better judgement, I booked this for the wife and I for our 10th Anniversary trip just for her. Straight up though, it wound up being the most fun I'd ever had watching Illuminations. You check in and get a bracelet, and then go off and do other things until it's time for seating. Notice the word "seating". There are four person tables all behind and around "Disney Traders". As we were being escorted to our seats, we were offered a choice between adult beverages. We sat with another couple from PA, enjoyed nice conversation(s), and had finger foods/desserts until time for Illuminations to start. There were a lot of different foods from fruits to fondue, many types of desserts to choose from, some Frozen themed, and it was unlimited. We had decided to skip out on dinner that night and the food was more than enough to make up for that. So, that was a good call on our part. They had regular can sodas and two types of "punch" drinks based on the theme. They also had a cash bar for additional adult beverages. You were also given special glasses to watch the fireworks, similar to the kind of glasses they used to give to APs for the Osborne Lights show. Remember the "seating" part? We got to watch the fireworks, unobstructed, from a chair and table setup that was very comfortable. Since EPCOT was our second park for the day, it was really nice to just be able to sit down and watch the show without fighting around people and waiting around for an hour or more to secure a good spot. Yeah, we waited regardless, but with a chair, a table, food, and beverages. Everyone at their tables remained there, seated, and then watched the show comfortably. For anyone with sciatica, you know what I'm talking about and why this is a big deal. Several minutes after the show, we were all escorted by staff with Frozen "wands" over to the ride, which was only open to our group, and went on the ride. We were at the back of the line and it only took a few minutes, it seemed like, once we got in the queue to make it on the ride. After that, it was over. This isn't something we would necessarily do every trip, but it was something given our anniversary and other circumstances that made it totally worth it. The only minor gripe I might have had with it is that Anna nor Elsa make an appearance, not even to smile or wave. I guess they are afraid they may get stampeded or something. But, we survived either way and I give it an "A" for a one off type of splurge.

To the left of Disney Traders. At around 6ish or so they start the check-in. At around 6:30-6:45, a small line forms to the right of the check-in and when you get to the front of that line, they verify your check-in a second time and then the next host/hostess escorts you to your table, explaining where everything is along the way.

I've been checking back periodically to book this for a trip in March 2018 but the availability stops the end of January. Has anyone heard if they are discontinuing this and/or bringing back the illuminations sparkling party? I know these special events aren't always available during the 180 day dining window but with all the hyper planning Disney is conditioning everyone to do, its weird that they dont. Thanks!
