Would you pay this in the USA for gas (petrol). This is what I have just had to pay here in the UK, at one of the cheapest gas stations in the country.

No
I believe from my economics class last year was that the high taxation on gas in Europe drives up the gas prices encouraging people to use alternative forms of transportation. So it's no accident.

And I need my car to get anywhere, so I'd have to pay that.

I can commute by train, but it would send my commute to over an hour to go to my usual office and take like 3 hours to the NYC one.

It would more likely cause me to get a Volt or Tesla really quick.

Even though all the public car parks around my city have charging points, there is no where at work to charge up. So I would never get home again.

There's really no way to get around without a car where I live. Unless you want to walk to work (lots of people work 30 minutes away at least). And our public transportation consists of two local taxis.

It would shoot our economy back into the gutter (and then some). If people thought the recent recession was bad & hard to climb out of, just wait and see what $8/gas would do to us.

Disney/Universal (or any major U.S. tourism hot spot) would be wrecked, as not only would that high fuel cost impact drivers, but would also be shared with the airline companies, resulting in astronomical airfares that we can only imagine right now.

Any economic improvement we've made over recent years would be all for not if this were to happen, as it would spark a downturn that makes summer of 2008 look like Candyland.

So to answer the OP's question, I don't think this would happen because our country (especially still in economic healing stage) could not handle the impact of $8/gas. It would break us.

But at least we could BM.
I added your closing sentence, you must have forgotten it.

Even though its nice having your own car, everywhere in Europe has public transportation! That varies dramatically where you live in the states as most cities don't have that kind of transport an if we do, it's more of a pain to get anywhere without having to spend hours of traveling and waiting for busses...

$8 would literally kill the US as so many depend on cars to get everywhere! Hardly anyone would be able to get to work!

That's crazy that you have to pay so much! Is this a very recent change and what were you paying before? How scary! Is there a ton of backlash from citizens about it???

It's the first time that it has hit that price. It has been going up steadily for years now.

I actually used to run a gas station about 15 years ago, it was less than $2 gallon back then. There where some protests when the price hit $4, it caused massive panic because the fuel tanker drivers went on strike. These days everyone just gets on with it.

Not to mention the sticker shock of any item which requires delivery...a.k.a. EVERYTHING. Combine that with the fact that wages (overall) in this country are on the decline. Like I said, it would completely break us.

Ehhhh not in the UK it isnt. Rural links are being slashed by bus companies who play the system to get subsidies then cut services cause they claim there is no demand. Leaving Old folk and the young stranded. Trains are dangerously over crowded because they dont put enough carriages on, the timing are shocking. And prices a joke.
The reason we are paying stupid amounts for fuel is that most of us dont live or work in London and have no other choice, especially since the government made fuel protests illegal.

That price would cripple this country, we are built with people living in the suburbs and driving into the office, at least in the northeast us.

And by the way, I am showing my ignorance here, and want to learn; but do you not trade in Euros or pounds, rather than dollars? Is the $8 that you quote in US dollars? And if there is a difference to whatever form you actually use, what is the actual price in your currency?

As said the price we pay is around £1.40 per litre.
I converted that into the $ per US gallon. A US gallon is 3.78 litres. A UK gallon is 4.5 litres.

Thanks for the lesson. I thought you had converted it for us, but you never know these days. Now another question: Does your keyboard come with the pound sign? I would assume that it does, as opposed to our standard dollar sign. Do you have to use the character map for either one?

Hey, just trying to have global perspective, here! ;-)
