Swan & Dolphin story?

What do you want to know?

They are both hotels on WDW property but they are not run by Disney. One has a swan on top of it and one has a fish. They say it isn't really a fish, it is some type of rare dolphin, but you and I both know it's a fish.

There is a darker area on the sides of the buildings. This is so Disney can remember where to put the monorail track when they finally expand the monorail system.

That's all you need to know about the Swan and Dolphin.

(edit: I'm kidding about this stuff, really!)

Well there was a nice story about the S&D being visible from inside of Epcot. Supposedly when Eisner realized that you would be able to see S&D from inside of Epcot...a big no-no at the time, he asked one of the superintendents about what could be done to remedy the situation. The super replied "Dynamite"

I have serious doubts that this story is true but it is funny none the less.

.

LOL love that myth. It is of course not true. The monorail plan was to run along the side of the Swan Dolphin, between those two hotels and the Yacht Club. It was never meant to go through the hotels. The black box is actually just a Michael Graves design element.

It's a Mahi-Mahi, which is commonly known as the Dolphin Fish.

The story I would like to read about is that they were supposed to be owned by Disney but they had to sell them in the late 80's.
Never heard of that. It is my understanding that they have never belonged to Disney. There might have been plans at one time for a Disney owned resort on the same location but plans like that come and go all the time.

Steve, just so you know I was trying to be funny. I know it is actually a type of dolphin and I also know the dark area has nothing to do with the monorail. I guess I should have used some kind of smiley icon so everyone knew I was just kidding around.

I don't want you to think I really believe that stuff! Especially the monorail one, that always makes me laugh when someone actually believes it. I understand there is a monorail right-of-way nearby but to think they would have to make that part of the building a different color so they could someday drill through the building is mind-boggling to me! How can anyone actually believe that?

Anyway thanks for straightening me out but honestly I knew better! (so embarrasing...)

No, times were tough financially for Disney and Eisner did not want to spend the money building two more delxue-type hotels.

And from reading that article he was able to bring conventions that were larger than the WDW hotels could accommodate at the time onto the property without having to break the bank investing in the new hotels. Kinda smart.

I still don't like that you can see the buildings from World Showcase. When we had lunch with an Imagineer back in May '08 we were discussing what the fans liked/disliked in the parks, resorts, etc. Our host was very interested and entertained by the things we told him were regularly said (ie. the LaL "tombstones"). In turn, we asked him if there's anything that the Imagineers (in general) don't like. He said, "Absolutely!" The first thing on the list was the Swan & Dolphin Resorts. Second was the BaH. I knew I liked Imagineers. :D

That is absolutely not true! I was born and raised in Irlando. The monorail ran through the Swan& Dolphin hotel while it when it first opened. I as well as my 80 year old father rode the monorail through it. It is NOT a MYTH!

You are joking right? The monorail has never ran through the Swan and Dolphin.

Former Monorail Pilot here. 100% NOT true. The only resort you or your father ever rode through at WDW was the Contemporary.
