July 30th Continued...

I'm going to give a preview of the next section of the trip.

After we left Carlsbad Caverns, we had two options.
1. Go check into the the hotel.
2. Go to another national park, even if we wouldn't be able to see/do much in said park.

This was a really last minute add to my tentative plans just before travel. At first, I thought we might pop by Big Bend National Park on our way to our stop for the night on the 31st. After sitting on that idea for several weeks, I took a closer look at the map and saw that Guadalupe Mountains National Park was also close. What I didn't realize...at least not until we were somewhere in NM...was that GMNP was actually much closer to Carlsbad. In fact, the range that GMNP is in is part of the same range associated with Carlsbad Caverns. So, it made a lot more sense to see this one right now. This park has no areas, outside of the visitor center and the road flanking the park, so it really would just be a pop in to see what little we could see and go on our merry way. That being said, we were really impressed with what little we saw. It also was oddly familiar. Like White Sands, I'd realized that I'd seen this from the air...but unlike White Sands, I didn't know what I was seeing at the time. I'll show you better in the upcoming pictures. So, here's a preview...

Going to this one involved us crossing the border into Texas. It felt really strange to be back in Texas after nearly 2.5 weeks. It also didn't feel like the Texas we know, since we were all the way on the other side of the state. The only familiar thing was that we'd switched back to the central time zone. The visitor center was closing at 4:30, so we rushed in...kids got their stamps, I got my ornament, and we rushed out at 4:28.

While we were there, David had this crazy idea that we could ditch our lodging in Carlsbad and spend the night in El Paso. I think he just assumed our next day would be an easier drive if we were already in Texas. Aside from the fact that I'd be charged for my lodging in Carlsbad, El Paso is between 60-90 minutes farther from our next stop (San Antonio). So, we stuck with our original plan to spend the evening in Carlsbad, NM.

Coming up...pictures from GMNP and our evening in Carlsbad, NM.

July 30th continued...

So, here we are making the surprisingly short drive from Carlsbad Caverns National Park to Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

We were in Texas in just a matter of minutes.

51345879017_65c64fcf88_b.jpg

And the national park wasn't that far either.

As we approached the visitor center, I realized there was something oddly familiar about this place.

Some of it was just that the mountains reminded me a bit of things I'd seen in pics from Hawaii, but that end point (I'd later come to learn is called El Capitan), was a little too familiar to be a coincidence.

51345879797_828c46a1b0_b.jpg

Back in December 2018, that same trip where I took the pics of White Sands NP from the air, I also took a pic of some very distinctive looking mountains. Unlike White Sands, I had no idea what I was looking at. The pilot kept talking about people on the left side of the plane being able to see El Paso, but no mention of the right. So, I have 18 pictures from the air labeled "Near El Paso." It turns out, those pictures are of Guadalupe Mountains NP!

Of course, it was much nicer from the ground in the middle of summer. We weren't prepared to do any hiking. Our legs were already angry with us over the 750 story hike down at Carlsbad, but what we could see from this entry point was really pretty.

We did talk briefly about a small hike, but we were all in pants because of cooler cave temps, and it was in the mid to upper 90s. So, we drove back to Carlsbad. Things were really chatty during hotel check in. It also felt so bizarre because the place was loaded with softball families...and we weren't one of them! Well, we were...just not playing. Oh well, we made our way up to our room. Sam is helping with the beer. LOL

51363743276_679efc3a78_b.jpg

Of course it started raining in all of this. That's us...rain in arid places! We then tried to decide on dinner. We picked several places, but with this softball tournament in town, they were all packed. We ended up at some place in a modernized old school motel. It was OK, but David got a steak and potato with salad bar, so he was happy.

After this, we drove back to the hotel. Not the most exciting area, but as you can see, there are still storms around.

We then went inside. The kids went down to the pool while I decided to take a final look at all of the ornaments I collected on this trip...

You may notice that there are no Yellowstone ornaments. I decided to save my money. I already have four or five from Yellowstone, so I didn't see the need for any more this trip.

Coming up...we head to our final touristy destination of this trip.

July 31st-

I woke up feeling a bit sad. I was tired and ready for the trip to be over, but I kind of wanted to go back to some of the fun places we'd previously explored a bit and get some more time. Oh well, it is what it is. We packed up and went downstairs for breakfast, but it turns out, all of the softball people raided the food and nothing was replenished. It wasn't like it was late either. I'm sure some of the teams had 8am games, meaning they had to be at the fields by 7am, but by 7:30...there was nothing. So, we packed up our bags, I informed the front desk about a lamp in the room with a shade that was apparently just balanced in place, and went on our way. We picked up some food and gas at a local convenience store and started to head into Texas (a different way than the day before, but still pretty quick trip to get to the border).

We made a pit stop in Fort Stockton, TX. I was lagging a bit behind and by the time I got inside, I couldn't find any of my family. It was one of those larger truck stop type places with showers...and I accidentally wound up in the area with all of the trucker showers. Fun times. Took a few pics...

51364479649_ef14314bc0_b.jpg

And then we were on our way again. Next stop, San Antonio. We had previously discussed going to Big Bend National Park first, but it wasn't nearly as convenient as Guadalupe Mountains. Not counting stops and taking in some of the park, it would have turned a 6.5 hr drive into a 10 hour drive. It also would have meant spending no time wandering the Riverwalk. So, I begrudgingly removed it from our itinerary.

I was actually pretty excited to go to San Antonio. Before the kids, we used to go quite frequently and stay in some of the nice spots on the Riverwalk. Even after the kids were born and Sam was an infant, we stayed in the area over by Sea World, that's full of hilly areas and nice retreat style resorts. Traffic was a beast getting into San Antonio. I'm sure some is because we hadn't been around a larger city in 2.5 weeks, some was that it's been ages since I've fought rush hour (March 2020), and some was construction throwing off navigation. When we finally arrived at our hotel, this were kind of crazy...and not in the good way. The main entrance had no area to stop and unload, so David had to sit there illegally parked while I went in. Going in was also a challenge because it was card access only (would learn the whole area now has security issues), and even once in, I had to push through a crowd of people waiting at the elevators with some poor hotel employee trying to manage things. Check in was easy enough, but unlike our normal Riverwalk faves, this place didn't have parking (website said otherwise) and she gave me really sketchy directions to get to the valet area. When we finally found it and checked in with the valet captain, some guy...not in uniform...approached me to park my car. Considering all of the security concerns, I had to wait and confirm with the bell captain that the guy was legit...which I'm sure didn't sit well with him and may have been part of our next day issues.

The line to the elevator wasn't as bad when we got over there, but it still took us at least 10 minutes to get upstairs. At least it's a really cool looking hotel (more on that coming up), so that entertained us a bit. Once up to our floor, we settled into our massive corner room.

The kids were so young when they were last here that they have no memories of any of it, so our goal was to get back up to street level at the Alamo. I had no desire to go in and didn't bother booking tickets...which is probably a good thing since we didn't arrive until right when it was closing. At least the path to the Alamo takes us through what has always been my favorite hotel on the Riverwalk. I just adore how the water continues to flow through this area of the Hyatt.

My only beef...this used to be such a nice, clean elegant area. I guess it attracted so much attention that it now looks like a tacky shopping mall. In fact, a lot of the Riverwalk felt that way. Not that it's ever been some super snooty ultra classy sort of thing...nor is that what I wanted...but the vibe had changed and felt more trashy than it had in the past. Vegas may be my best analogy...like being in one of the nicer casinos/casino areas vs. some of the cheaper more hard core partying areas. Both have a party and fun vibe, but one is nicer than the other. At least the water areas leading out of the hotel to the front are still there and pretty nice.

Time to head back to the Riverwalk...

51364754515_41163ed2d9_b.jpg

51364754405_b6d3b23e7e_b.jpg

Kendall had started to complain that she wasn't feeling well. It was looking like a cold, but I wasn't really sure. Thankfully, there's a CVS on the Riverwalk that's pretty close to the Hyatt. So, I got her some meds. I debated about an Alamo holiday ornament, but I made the executive decision at that moment that I wanted my tree to focus on the national parks, and just the parks.

After that, we went in search of dinner. We thought about Dick's Last Resort since we didn't get to go in FL earlier the month, but it was crazy busy and with Kendall not feeling well, it wouldn't be very fun. So we decided Mexican or Tex Mex. I wanted Kendall to sit and get some water for her meds, so we really just went with the first place we saw. It's not the place we used to always go to, but I figured it would do. Check in was chaos, which didn't help, and we were seated in a really strange area...sort of under a staircase and very little view. The people near us paid the mariachis to come and play, so at least we got to enjoy some of that.

51349002978_ed4b95d355_b.jpg

The service was really slow and food took forever. Our server was a nice guy, and I was trying to cut him some slack because he was new and never waited tables before. Just a symptom of labor shortage issues. We did eventually get our food, and while it filled our bellies, it wasn't great. We also witnessed some kind of security issue where we sat there. Not a clue what happened, but something was up. We vowed we'd have to go out for Mexican again once we got home to Houston. We tried to get K some ice cream before heading back, but she was fading, and this place next door wouldn't clean any of their stuff to make it safer for her. Boo!!!

51349002998_e3ccef23fe_b.jpg

Kendall really needed to rest, so as soon as we finished dinner and left the ice cream/candy place, we walked back to the hotel. She complained a lot along the way, but it's not like I can carry her and getting a cab or Lyft probably would have taken even longer.

As soon as we got back to the room and got some meds into Kendall (I couldn't open them at the restaurant), it came up that she hadn't really been drinking. So we got the meds into her as well as some fluids, and she took a nap. Sam was content to play on her phone and watch tv.

So, David and I decided to go out and explore the hotel. You can really tell this was office space, because the floor had this little break area that screamed "employee lunch room."

Really nice staff and pretty talented/creative, but we decided to eventually go out and do some people watching in an upper area of the lobby.

I guess I haven't explained the hotel. If you couldn't tell, it's an old bank building...back from the days when banks were big elegant structures where important people do business. Yeah, I'm pretty sure our massive room was probably some executive's old corner office.

After our lobby time, we decided to head up to the roof to check out the view and the pool area. That's where I started getting the dirty trashy feeling again. We were on the elevator with a couple of guys who appeared to have gang tattoos...ya know, tears and such. So, that was fun. The view from the top was neat, but the pool up there was wall to wall people. Seriously, it looked like a crowded dance floor, but in the pool and I'm pretty sure there were some "adult" things going on in there. Needless to say, we left and went back to the room.

David and Sam walked around a little after that and I stayed with K, who was feeling much better, but we all did our final pack up for the trip and went to bed after that. I just took a few pics of the night view...and that was pretty much it for the day.

Actually, us relaxing and watching the Olympics was it for the night...

51349179323_5f13c4c992_b.jpg

August 1st

The next morning, we got up for breakfast. We must have waited close to 10 minutes for an elevator before giving up. We took the stairs and eventually found a spot to eat. It was then back up to the room to get all of our stuff together to make our way home. We got our stuff out of the room, but the rest of the process of getting out of San Antonio was a bit of a disaster.

It was close to 25 minutes to get an elevator. When we first got to the elevator bank, there was a guy there with his dog. He was worried about her making a mess, so I suggested that walking down might be his best option. We had too much luggage for that to work. When we finally got downstairs, checkout was easy enough, but there was this whole QR code digital valet thing to get our vehicle. They had a digital board, similar to the newer ones about Disney buses, so we could track our progress. We were at about 35 minutes when they finally had our car. We waited in the lobby during all of this, because who wants to sit in an exhaust filled garage drive thru area...right?!!? When we got out there, it was wall to wall people...most of which didn't follow procedure, but were still being accommodated. On top of that, you had gridlock because one family was taking forever loading stuff up. In the short time we were out there, I saw them rearrange bags at least twice and start moving around car seats. When I saw my vehicle pulled in, they kept it right on the entry point to the garage...so my plan was to back out as soon as we had things loaded up. After all, we're pros at this!

My joy over the vehicle arriving and being in one piece was destroyed by the coating of bird poop on the car. Not a single other vehicle in there had this happen, but mine had several areas where it was crusted in thick layers on there, to the point that you couldn't see the paint. I took pics, but they make me gag just looking at them...so I'll spare you. The passenger door was so bad that David literally had to grip a poop encrusted handle to get in. Thankfully, I had plenty of wipes, hand sanitizer and bags for garbage inside the car. Like I said...I have pics, but no need to share.

We hoped we could get it washed before driving back to Houston, so after getting out of downtown, we went in search of a place along I-10 that also had a wash. We ended up driving close to 15 miles before there was even a gas station that was easy access. Of course, they also had no wash (second one we tried). So we resorted to the window washing squeegees and paper towels to try and at least remedy the handle situation. It was so bad that the car pumping gas next to us stopped to ask about it. You know when you think it looks bad, but everyone else says it's no big deal...well, this wasn't one of those cases.

We kept hitting backups from accidents and construction along the way home. We wound up having to stop in Katy, TX, just outside of Houston for a potty break, just because it took so long. We eventually got home, got the dog...and I got the car washed...although, I had to get the guy go back to it multiple times for everything he missed. He still did a cruddy job with the bugs.

Once she was cleaned up...I found the one piece of damage from the trip.

It still works and I managed to not get any windshield damage, so I'd say we made out pretty well!

CLOSING THOUGHTS :)

I usually do some long drawn out closing thoughts, but we've been home for nearly 2 months and it's time to be done with the TR. LOL So, here are my thoughts...

1. While I appreciated not having to pay pricey airfare costs to get us to a small airport in the middle of Montana as well as not paying insane prices for 2 weeks of rental car fees, the time it took to get from Houston to Medora and from Carlsbad to Houston definitely took its toll. I think it's clear from our crankiness that we hit several points where being on the road like this was just too much. The goal was originally to get to Glacier and build in a big road trip around it...which I did...but it became so much more about the length of the trip and getting everywhere. That's not to say that I wouldn't do something like this again, but for as long as we were gone, it felt rushed.

2. Before leaving on this trip, I had a goal of getting to Alaska in 2023 as well as several other national parks in the continental US. Everyone has asked for a break from national parks. No matter how I spin it...even devoting lots of time to San Francisco, Portland and/or Seattle...nobody else is onboard. We also aren't sure we want to bring the kids with us to Alaska, so we may just push it off some more. The kids have since come to their senses and don't see staying with Grandma and Grandpa as a better alternative to vacations with us, but their still a bit flat on anything with future travel in general.

3. I think it's safe to say that the new vehicle that replaced my lemon VW Atlas did a very good job on the road trip. I worried about cargo space, but it wasn't an issue. I've decided that any reservations I still have about the vehicle are really just that it wasn't my first choice. So, at least I know going forward that we're set with a road trip vehicle if anyone wants to drive anywhere. I am considering a different tire at some point so we're better equipped for more rugged roads and winter weather.

4. Yellowstone is still our favorite! No regrets about visiting, but if we took it out of the trip, we could have added Washington and Oregon into our list of states visited. We would have just gone to Spokane after Glacier and then traveled through part of Oregon to get to Shoshone falls in ID. I'm still questioning if I should have skipped adding states by going the eastern route vs. going through Rapid City on the way to Medora, so it's probably for the best that I left Yellowstone in the mix.

5. I still feel crazy insane for going through with all of this. I really thought David would say no when I first showed him my huge road trip travel map. I really never dreamed we'd actually do this. I know it's not all that uncommon to see people on cross country trips, but it's still pretty wild to look at the map...when you're at your "farthest from home" point of the trip and think, I drove over 2300 miles to get here, and the path home is going to be even longer. Just wrapping my head around going from Gulf of Mexico area to almost the Canadian border...just still is wild to me.

So, what are we up to next? Different stuff. We're still looking at DC for February, but with the travel involved during the year for softball and costs of Kendall becoming a licensed driver in the next year, we may scrap it. David is still pushing for it, but I just haven't had any time to research it. We have booked a cruise for late July out of Port Canaveral. Houston/Galveston has its own cruise port, but my dad wanted to do something as a family for their upcoming milestone anniversary and the kids wanted Universal. So, now 10 of us will be on the same ship...a big ship. LOL I know many on this site are all about cruising DCL, but it's just never appealed to me. Actually, cruising has never really appealed to me, but my brother has gone a number of times and up until Covid, my parents were going on something like 4-5 per year...sometimes more! I think they achieved Pinnacle Club of Royal Caribbean's Crown and Anchor society a few years ago. In light of that, we'll be sailing with RCCL. We're supposed to stop in the Bahamas, St. Thomas, and St. Kitts/Nevis. I'm really not a beach person, but I love pretty blue water and things involving sea life. After the cruise, we plan to go to Universal for a couple of days. We'll see how it goes, but we may pop into Disney on our first day. David and I wouldn't mind an evening in Epcot going around the WS and we could get Genie+ for the kids so they could do attractions. We'll see.

Thanks for following along!!!

@HouCuseChickie , thanks for sharing your family's summer vacation trip. Guess you all had your "fill" of national parks for a while! ;) Although some parks were fairly similar, others were very unique. Your photos (and detailed commentary) really captured all the highlights and nuances.

So I'm curious -- which one was your favorite?

Of the "new to us" parks, Zion was the favorite and I'd consider visiting again. Part of me wouldn't mind revisiting Glacier, since we may have better luck with wildlife and crowds if we go some time other than peak summer. I also wouldn't mind going back to Salt Lake City at some point...maybe for skiing for David and the kids and just mountain time for me. LOL Yellowstone is still the overall favorite of the parks.

Thanks for sharing your trip with us. I loved seeing the National Parks. Seeing your pictures of Zion has intrigued me, so that is on the list for maybe 2023/2024.

You're welcome! I can't see myself ever doing the big hikes, but I'd just like a solid day where we can get on the shuttle into that part of the park that restricts personal vehicles and just get a taste of what else is in there.

I haven't read updates on this in awhile and just had a whirlwind trip along with you! I would definitely give Glacier another chance - there is so much you didn't get to see and maybe continue North to Banff? Thank you for taking the time to do a report on this big trip. I'm sure your daughters will revisit this in the coming years and be very grateful for having done it. Looking forward to the next adventure!

We wanted to cross into Canada and go to Banff, but I think the border opened right around the time of our trip. So, we didn't bother with getting passports updated. That is definitely on the wish list of places. Thanks for following along!
