Trip Report 4,225 miles and all I got was this ring ;-)

Hey everyone I thought i would get started on my first ever Trip Report whilst it's all still fresh in my head, and before i get crazy busy with uni work( i start teacher training for post compulsory education on Wednesday, eeek!)
I suppose i should start with a whose who this trip is slightly different than usual for me, I usually come with my family but its just me (Mel) and my fiance (Matty) (I can't get used to typing that yet!) this is my 5th trip and Matty's second. Believe it or not this is my first trip actually staying on site . I have been dying to do it for years and have been counting down since we booked last November.
Our trip dates were 06/09/14-20/09/14 and we stayed at the Art of Animation resort in the little mermaid section, i was far too excited about this the little mermaid was one of my favourites when i was a kid. we also decided to go with the dining plan. Being from the UK we are lucky to be able to get the 14 day ultimate tickets for quite a reasonable price, so naturally we had to have two of those:rolleyes:.
so I think that's all the background info, hope you all enjoy my TR:)

day one
We were up at 6AM to get to Manchester Airport, luckily it's only like a 20 min trip from where we live, don't ask me how, but I actually slept well that NEVER happens the night before I go on holiday. It must have been all the rushing around getting everything ready for both the holiday and going back to University. We had a pretty uneventful time getting through security, as there have been some issues with increased wait times with the new security measures in place in the UK (my folks were at the same airport heading to Greece the same day, and they queued outside the Airport it was that bad)
We flew with Thomas Cook this year it worked out like £400 cheaper than flying with virgin so it was a no brainer really, plus we have noticed a drop in standards with virgin atlantic since we first flew with them. overall we were glad we did, their new planes actually have legroom! Matty is pretty tall so he usually takes my legroom as well as his own!
The only problem is there was very little to watch or listen to and if you wanted the premium channels you had to pay, that was kind of stingy but not the end of the world.
a big bonus for me was the food was actually edible! being a vegetarian/ pescatarian for well over 10 years now i have been served some dreadful and actually unidentifiable options on planes.

after a pretty decent but tiring 9 hour flight we just wanted to get to the hotel to shower and get a change of clothes. we cleared customs/ immigration in record time, those little machine / kiosk things they have installed at MCO have really helped speed things up. Next up was the part that I was a little nervous about. Thomas Cook didn't seem to have a clue about how to get on the magical express from the airport, first we were told we needed to see our rep and get coupons, then we were told we didn't need Coupons but to see them anyway, then a third employee told us to just get straight on the bus, so helpful:facepalm:
turns out we just had to present them with the paperwork and the disney magical express peeps did the rest. I wish we had a picture of us when it was our turn to get on the bus we were just so excited! we loved that officer peabody does the safety announcements on the bus, I literally yelled at the screen when i saw it was him:oops:.

when we pulled up at our resort we were just blown away with the look and scale of the place, literally i still can't describe stepping in to the reception for the first time. i just had to pinch myself to check it was real! we picked up our bands( you don't get them posted to you on the UK, or get a choice of color) I was praying mine wasn't pink, i hate pink and always have done, so the thought of having to wear it for two weeks didn't appeal! luckily we both just got grey. we picked up our resort mugs and headed out to find our room.
we were like kids at christmas looking at all the decoration along the way, the lion king section is really cute IMG_1467.JPG
IMG_1466.JPG

When I got to the little mermaid section i was pretty much beside myself. it's so well done. my fiance was worried the resort may look a little too garish or childlike, but it exceeded both our expectations, and mine were pretty high! the garden areas are immaculate.
we were actually in the Ariel section, yay!:joyfull:
IMG_1463.JPG

and this was the view from our room
IMG_1596.JPG
It may sound weird, but we preferred this to looking out over the pool it was much more peaceful and private. we also requested the top floor, we live in a middle floor apartment so it was nice to have a break from hearing people above you, or them and their home gym in our neighbours case:mad:
we found our room with little difficulty, it was amazing opening the door for the first time, the details in the little mermaid rooms were so cool! i wanted to take home most of it, matty did threaten to check my bags on the way out just in case. like thisIMG_1593.JPG
or thisIMG_1585.JPG
It was safe to say i loved the room, and i think i had matty converted. I just couldn't believe we were there! its been kind of a long year with waiting to go back to university, then in February i had a very nasty accident at work which i'm still recovering from, so counting down to this trip has been keeping me sane!
so we had a quick shower and let the folks back home know we had got there safely, then it was time for downtown disney:)

we headed straight for splitsville, we were starving after the long flight so we got cracking on those dining credits ;). we ate there last year on our last day and loved it. We had been talking about eating there for ages and it didn't disappoint. I had the margherita pizza and matty had the pulled pork burger, we shared a side of loaded fries( with no bacon) sorry we took no pics of this one, our hunger pangs were just too strong! we also had brownies for dessert. we forgot how large american portions are, so were basically in a food coma by this point.
we had started to look round the shops and then jetlag kicked in big time, so we caught the bus back to the hotel and turned in for the night.
stay tuned for day 2....

Your trip report is enjoyable to read! Love your photo with the Mad Hatter and Alice. And your breakfast at O'Hana's made me hungry...especially for the biscuits. I'm a pescatarian, so whi,e the rest of the family is munching on the breakfast meats, the biscuits are all for me :). Sounds like AoA food court is really yummy...nutella Gelato?!
thank you, glad your enjoying it! I loved it there and usually I am in no way a breakfast person at home. ah cool I guess I fall into that category too but people always seem confused when I say pescatarian, like they have never heard the term. AoA is awesome there are so many non meat choices, the gelato was sooo good i'd kill for some now!

Right sorry for the delay folks been snowed under with uni work already, just finished my first ever lesson plan!. whilst I was taking care of that I happened to get my bank statement and we have been charged as if we were a no show at whispering canyon café!. I phoned up at got my money back, but not the fees as I have been charged for "using" the card abroad. I even asked on the day if us being seated early was an issue and the server said no. not impressed! anyway rant over here is the next day...
DAY SIX
Today was our first day at EPCOT I have a bit of a love hate relationship with this park, I think it's great how it goes into such detail about things like our history and culture, but I just find it a little dry sometimes. I think sometimes when i'm on holiday I would rather be entertained than educated, maybe that will change one day who knows! I think this was the weirdest day for me being there without my family for the first time, my folks love EPCOT I kinda felt guilty going knowing they were having a rubbish holiday themselves. But I digress. we were up bright and early so we could get there for ropedrop, we grabbed our usual morning pastries (we were totally addicted to them by this point, and really miss them now we are home) and headed to the bus stop. we got there about 25 mins before opening. the CM'S seemed really pumped that morning, one guy was weaving through the crowds picking out birthdays and other celebrations and getting everyone singing and clapping for them. As we were waiting to get in one of the CM's was asking about our engagement, he was telling matty he had set the bar way to high and was never going to be able to top it lol. it still makes me laugh now he was deadly serious when he said it.
When we got in we headed straight for TT as we hadn't got fp's for it. I'm not a fan of being limited to how many you can have now and this categories business, but anyhoo it was my first time riding the new version, we were there when it was done last year, but I kind of ended up in a wheelchair when we were due at EPCOT and I didn't feel up to riding it. I really like the new version, it's so sleek! it really reminds me of tron. designing the car was cool too.
After TT we headed over to the nemo area. I could mooch around that aquarium all day, especially the manatee area I don't know why but I think they are so cute. we decided to do turtle talk with crush, yes we were one of the few child free couples but who care, it's Disney right? ;)
Next up we had FP's for soarin' I wasn't sure how this was going to go, the MR isn't great with heights at all. to be fair it went way better than I expected he just said it made him a little dizzy but other than that it was good, success! it's so strange with that ride it makes so many people but not me which is crazy considering 15 mins in the back of a car does not end well for me:hungover:.
Next up was living with the land, this is my pops all time fave so we made sure to get loads of pics.IMG_0736.JPG IMG_0754.JPG I would include more but my laptop is not co-operating!
we were really hungry after we got off so we decided to get lunch at sunshine seasons, we had never eaten here and I was dying to try the beets salad. after months of waiting I loved it! dessert was yummy too
IMG_0756.JPG

we were pretty full after lunch we decided we really didn't fancy anything fast paced so spaceship earth it was. Judy dench's voice is so soothing, I wish I had taken a picture of our faces when they caption what your life should look like we looked like maniacs! it was getting pretty stormy out so we headed back to AoA for the afternoon. next up part 6 the evening...

Part 6 continued...
We got back to AoA after it being really stormy to bright sunshine, only in Florida! we had a nice relax in the pool then got ready for our evening at EPCOT. everywhere was still soaked by the time we got back, they must have had it really bad. we had a good look in mouse gears, I was on the hunt for presents for the folks back home but some how ended up buying myself a pin bag oops:oops:. Now I don't know what was going on with the drains in Mouse Gear this year but that whole area STUNK. I love that shop but I just couldn't stand it any longer in there. we had a little detour to First Aid to grab some Band Aids, though it took a little while as we kept calling them plasters ( the English word for band aids) the Cm just kept looking at us like we were crazy. luckily there was a british lady in there who reminded us. One of the CM's in there was trying to convince us to have our wedding there ( preaching to the converted there lady ;)) we slowly made our way over to our dinner reservations at Garden Grill, it was nice just taking in the view EPCOT is so beautiful at dusk.
The wait there was crazy and there were like a million kids running round with their parents totally ignoring them. This is a major pet peeve for me, maybe it's because i'm childless myself but I just can't understand why you would take your kids on holiday just to spend the whole time ignoring them. I don't remember my folks doing it to me, but maybe i'm just a lucky duck. Crazy lady rant over I swear! we were finally seated and we were in the tiniest section of a booth imaginable with a massive family like right next to us, if you didn't know any better you would swear we were with them! Our server found us and went to get us some drinks... he came back 20 mins later! we were actually considering leaving at one point. Then I had to explain that I eat fish but no meat, so any meat items needed to be served separately, I had to explain it a good 5 times before he understood me. all in all it wasn't shaping up to be the most relaxing meal ever! the bread rolls and butter were really yummy, I love the butter we serve there, I couldn't tell you what the salad was like because it still had bacon on:banghead:. mains were just ok, the highlights for me were the mac n cheese and the sweet potato fries from the kids menu! we were just finishing up mains when a new family were seated next to us, they were part of a Brazilian tour group that's when things got interesting. Their son kept trying to climb over the safety barrier into living with the land, some of the adults were clearly already loaded, and they would not stay sat down! they kept getting up every 2 seconds so we were trying to eat dessert with butts in our faces thanks to the close proximity of the tables! needless to say we ate up as quickly as we could and got the heck out of there! I think it was the second worst dining experience we ever had at WDW. The food was pretty ho-hum too so we won't be returning!
After the dinner from hell we decided to walk over to world showcase and grab a good spot for Illuminations. We had a look in at Canada along the way, Matty is a huge Maple leafs fan, and it's really hard to get merchandise at home so we were hoping to find some goodies in there. They had T-shirts but only in xxl, an improvement on last year when they had nothing, but we were pretty bummed as they weren't sure they would get any in his size before we left. We had a little look at the UK shops we were blown away at how much they charge for everyday items in there! was pretty tempting to set up an export business after seeing that!
we settled next to the rose and crown to watch illuminations, the show was awesome as always but the wind was not in our favour that night, the smoke headed straight for us! I was still picking gun power out of my hair the next day!
after illuminations we headed for home, I think we were starting to hit the wall and we had massive blisters so it was time to hit the hay.
next up day 7...

Just to update you all before I start day 7, after contacting Disney about the charges on my card they have refunded them and given me $20 for my trouble, and the rude agent I had to deal with previously. winner! Disney really are the best when it comes to customer service:D. Also I took my first ever lesson today, really on a high now it went way better than I expected! Anyhoo here's day 7....
DAY 7
lets see then by my calculations that would have made it Saturday, which was a full day at DHS. We managed to get there just after rope drop and made a beeline for RNRC. best way to start the day :). in typical form for us was a few( or more) rides on ToT. on one of the rides we had the two most hilarious Japanese girls ever. one of them was petrified from the library all the way to the ride exit, I just wish I had videoed them! she was hysterical by the time we sat down and rode the whole thing with her head in her friends lap! we were in stiches watching them i'm sure she was expecting someone to pop out on her the whole time we were in there.
After our free entertainment from the hysterical teens indulged in a bit of pin trading, love the pin boards at DHS we seemed to have some great finds there. After that we made sure to catch our favourites
IMG_1439.JPG

Jack Diamond was in fine form and picked us to help out with a magic trick or two :)
after our citizen stalking, it was time for TSMM I got beat yet again! luck was not with me on this trip!
we had a little time to kill before our lunch at Mama Melrose, so we shopped and took a few pics as we headed over. I love the little Christmas shop next door to MM I could buy everything in there, I actually had to be removed from the store by my better half... oops!
after a nice short wait we were seated and left with rolls and oil while we decided what to eat. I took me ages to decide, I love Italian so I wanted it all! we eventually went with the veggie flatbread and the campinelle (sorry I can't remember how you spell it) pasta. we both really enjoyed ours. Dessert was this bad boy
IMG_0763.JPG

OMG they were soo good! I have seen really mixed reviews of MM but we loved it.
after a lovely lunch matty headed to star tours while I relaxed and watched the world go by in the sun. that ride makes me sick at the best of times so there was no way I was going after lunch!
It was getting to be a bit of a warm one that day so we went to watch Indiana jones to get out of the sun,( I burn far too easily so mid afternoon I usually have to hide away, or cover up.) We saw the plant on the way in, its a shame they don't change who it is occasionally. the show was still cool though it will be kind of a shame if they do get rid of it.
we decided to head back to AoA for the afternoon, we had to stop for these guys again though
IMG_1448.JPG

I love sparky he's a cutie.
Our evening started with dinner at landscape of flavours, It was the usual burger for the Mr and I decided to (sort of) join him by trying their house made veggie burger. they are monsters, I could barely eat the thing it was that big! it was nice, I just wish it didn't have lima beans in I hate the texture of them. of course we had to indulge in dessert
IMG_1368.JPG

After dinner we headed out to watch Fantasmic! we got a seat no problem, the only issue was we were surrounded by very very loud south americans, at some points we actually couldn't hear the soundtrack:facepalm: not even joking! we noticed a lot of people this year that if a presentation wasn't in their own language they would just talk/shout all the way through it, I just hope I have never done that abroad because its really frustrating!
It was kind of a shame we couldn't hear properly after not managing to see it on a previous occasion, but no biggie. We weren't tired so we treated ourselves to a game of mini golf at fantasia gardens, and then headed for our hotel, so that's our trip half over. stay tuned folks...

Sorry to hear that you had such a bad time at Garden Grill. You can never tell which way the smoke will travel during the fireworks, once we camped out for the fireworks with the wind to our backs so the smoke would be pushed away from us but just as the show started the wind changed directions and blew every thing right at us. What was the name of that dessert? I will have to try that one looks so good:D. Following along.

Thanks we had hopes with it being over living with the land, but we had lots of other nice meals whilst we were there so it's ok. yeah it's one of those things, it really reminded me of the day after Bonfire night back in the UK, but far warmer!:). which one was it you were wanting the name of? I have so many dessert pics! I have a bit of a sweet tooth i'm afraid.

We love how unique the Garden Grill is, eating your meal while the scenery appears to roll on by............ unfortunately, we fell out of love with the food offerings and haven't returned since.

Keep on posting - great report

It's such a shame how poor the food is, because the actual setting is so unique you think they would want to do it justice. thanks I just need to get more than 5 mins to myself to finish it now!

The dessert I was asking about looks like a brownie with M&M's with hot fudge and marsh mellows. But you are right, you do have many dessert pictures and all look perfect to fill anybodys tummy
