Trip Report 28 Going on 8...A Birthday Trip!

Hi everyone! I’ve been home for a few days sorting & editing pictures and can’t wait to start sharing my latest trip:)

I’ve always wanted to spend my birthday in Disney World – who wouldn’t?! ;)
So when my sister suggested we go for my birthday instead of me flying out to Denver to visit (she just moved), I was in! Then I asked my parents if they would want to come and to my surprise…they said yes! They love Disney too, but we haven’t been as a family in a few years. It was later in the day when it hit me that they really said yes because it meant seeing my sister for the first time since she moved to Colorado  haha. But they really were excited to all be together and spend my birthday in Disney World too:)

We stayed Friday, July 8th to Tuesday, July 12th at Port Orleans French Quarter! My sister and I loved this resort the last time we stayed and couldn't wait for my parents to see it too, we knew they'd love the theming.

Here we are on our last family trip in April 2013

Mom- Phyllis
Me- Sam
Sister- Alyssa
Dad- Larry

There were a few hiccups in the week leading up to and day of the trip...

It was about a week before we were leaving when I found out that one of my admission guest passes was lost by a friend on our last trip. I knew I could replace it but after doing some research I found out it would take two weeks in the mail, or you could do it in person at a site in Celebration. But they close at 4 on Fridays, and I was going to be landing at 2:30, which would be cutting it too close. I decided to apply for a new pass online and hope it would come before we leave. I also started panicking about all the time I spent planning out our fastpasses and not knowing if they’d be able to be applied to a new guest pass. All was better when the new guest pass arrived a few days after I ordered the replacement and they assured me the fastpasses would transfer right over to the new pass with no issues. Crisis 1 averted!

Speaking of fastpasses…some of our fastpasses on my guest passes weren’t showing up, I called several times and everyone gave me a different answer and was told to check back in a couple days and the system should be fixed. That never happened. I was told I used all the allotments I had for my guest passes, I knew there wasn’t any truth to that, then finally a very helpful cast member made new fastpasses for those missing to match the rest of the ones on my main entrance pass. Crisis 2 averted!

And then the biggest problem…my sister flew in from Denver early on the 8th. I flew out from LaGuardia at 11, and my parents were on a 6:30pm flight from Newark. Around noon, my mom gets an email that JetBlue had cancelled their flight and put them on a new one 24 hours later. I’m on the plane and totally helpless (and freaking out). My mom was able to get them on a flight that left about 90 minutes earlier and would connect through Boston and still get in Friday night, just a few hours later. Well, that flight ends up being delayed more and more and eventually there is no way if they ever got to Boston, they wouldn’t even make their connection. So again start looking for another flight and JetBlue puts them on a 5:30am flight Saturday out of JFK. That was the best they were going to get and thankfully I live just outside of NYC so they had a place to stay overnight since jetblue wouldn’t give them a hotel or anything for transportation.
I was, and still am annoyed by the whole thing though. They blamed the weather. I’m a meteorologist. Don’t blame the weather when I see it is NOT raining at or near Newark. Of course safety is the number one priority, and if there had been storms at Newark I would completely understand. But to cancel a flight 7 hours in advance for the chance of a storm, which never happened...I just don’t get it. What is even more frustrating is that all the other airlines were flying out at the time their original flight was supposed to leave…ANYWAY knowing my parents were for sure on a flight first thing the next morning, my sister and I set out to enjoy our night together! We still felt bad they had spent all afternoon sitting around and dealing with the airport, but they were happy too just to be on a flight in the morning.

Sorry that was a lot, but NOW TO THE GOOD STUFF :)

I worked the morning before I left and when I walked into my office I was greeted with the best surprise! An early Disney princess birthday bash, complete with a blow up Mickey, princess figures lining my computer, a Frozen balloon and Disney music in the background. I’m so lucky that my coworkers are also some of my best friends. They know me very well and really got me good that morning. (ps. I’ve managed to keep those decorations up for over a week now ;) haha)

After work I raced to the airport where I learned I was upgraded to first class…woo! Then we were off to Orlando!

We landed early and I quickly made it on to the magical express and before I knew it, was looking at this!

Soon enough we were pulling into our home, I hopped off the bus and hustled to our room where my sister, Alyssa, was waiting! It was great to see her after being apart for 3 months, especially since we were in DISNEY! We had so much to catch up on, but had several days to do it- so we quickly changed, grabbed our ears and ran off to Magic Kingdom!

On our way to the bus we picked up a birthday button!:D:D

One of the things I was most excited to see was Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire and we needed to hurry to make the last show of the day! Those pictures coming up next :)[/url]

I am loving your report!
First of all, your family is so cute! You can tell that you all are having a wonderful time. Sorry your parents had issues with their flight, but am glad it worked out and you didn't even have to change any FP+ times :). Plus, it gave you and Alyssa some sister time which is always great!
We've used Memory Maker our last two trips. My sister and I took full advantage of it when we took our sister trip. That way we had pictures of both of us without them all being selfies. Most of the pictures came out well, but I've read a few recent reports where the photos were not so great.
Your photos of the sky at MK were beautiful. Actually, all of your photos are great!
Glad you liked Frozen Ever After. My daughter and I cheated and watched the video on here the day it opened. It looks like fun. I wish they would have built it in another park and kept Maelstrom, but at least it looks like it was well done.
Scavenger Hunt at Disney! Yes Please!!! Such a fun idea. I am trying to figure out if my family will love the idea or tell me I am crazy. I think I am going to try to convince them to do it on our next trip (whenever that will be, sadly no trip planned right now :()
Very fun that you saw Diane from Say Yes to the Dress. My daughter loves that show!
Flynn wished you Happy Birthday :inlove:! My daughter LOVES him. He is her absolute favorite. She would have been walking on air for the rest of the day if that happened to her.
It was sweet of your dad and sister to decorate the room for your birthday. POFQ looks like a great resort. I've never stayed there but after seeing it featured in multiple TRs it is on my radar for future trips.
Loved your story about the lightning.
Lisa! Thank you for all the kind compliments!:):)
I hope your family would be game for the scavenger hunt! Last time, we did different point tiers like - 1 point if you just take a picture of people in matching shirts, or 3 points if you pose with them. That was totally out of mine and my mom's comfort zone, but my dad and sister have pictures with all the groups they saw! My mom and I were not expecting that from them, it was so funny! This time we toned it back haha. But the stories and pictures we share from 3 years ago and this time always make us laugh. It's a fun and different way to run around the parks for a few hours :)
You need to plan another trip, and stay at POFQ! ;)

I love this - especially seeing all the different ears. I have such a hard decision to make when buying mine.

Diana from SYTTD! I probably wouldn't have recognized her - her voice probably.

Cute room decorations! And watching Wimbledon, too. Bonus! I think the US Open will be going on when I'm there - nice to see I'll be able to catch some when I'm in the room. :D:D:p
Thank you! So many ear choices! For my actual birthday which is the next day, I bought a new pair of the silver sequined ones to have something a little extra special :)
When I spotted Dianne, I was like "MOM I know her, I know she is somebody!" haha, then quickly realized that's who it was. My mom watches the show too but didn't pick it up until I said who she was. Her voice & hair stood out :)

The scavenger hunt is the cutest idea EVER!!! Seriously...brilliant.
Thank you!! It really was so fun! I'm glad we decided to do it again this trip. We had so much fun with it last trip, I think we all would have regretted not doing it again. Plus, my mom and I needed to win this time ;) And I loved comparing our strategies and seeing what different places we were ending up, such a fun and different way to spend a few hours around the parks!

Following!!!! What a great birthday!!

Can you tell me what kind of camera you used? Your photos are wonderful!
Thank you so much! It was the best birthday :)
Probably 95% of these are from my Nikon D3200. I have an 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm. I can't even begin to tell you how much I LOVE that camera :)

The hunt looked like fun! I vote that the parade was a great idea (thinking outside the box)!!!!
Thank you!!

I love the scavenger hunt idea! That seems like such a fun way to see the parks :) I'm super competitive so I would have definitely used the parade and would have been excited about my secret plan haha
You have to do it next time you go with your whole family!! We had come up with our "rules" and list of things a few months ago and just a few weeks before our trip it hit me that we should watch the parade so I called my mom and was like "I know how we can win!" haha
PS- just read in @blgauger report that both of your birthday's were last week too. Mine was the 10th! So fun we all share a birthday week :)

Once the storm passed the humidity spiked. Look at the steamy sassagoula! We were planning to go to Disney Springs for dinner but the boats weren’t back running yet so we waited for a bus.

My lens was all foggy :(

Mom was crazy for wearing a sweatshirt haha. We kept teasing her about it. Still not sure why she thought it was necessary, but she insisted!

This is the first time my sister and I have been to the Downtown Disney turned Disney Springs area in over a year, and it had been a few years for my parents. It is crazy how different it is from a year ago.

When we got there, it was PACKED. Way more packed than EPCOT or Magic Kingdom had been.

We were focused on dinner though so headed straight towards…Splitsville!

We all really love this place! On our trip a few years ago, my sister and I had surprised my mom and dad with a dinner at Fulton’s. So when they went there, we met up at Splitsville with some friends that work in Disney. Alyssa and I loved it so much that we went back with our parents later that trip! And since then, whenever we’ve made it to Downtown Disney, we’d stop at Splitsville at least for a drink.

Even though we’ve been there several times, we always choose the sushi. It is SO delicious! This time we all decided to just order something and we’d share since we were having a hard time deciding.

After dinner, we wanted to take the boat back to POFQ which was a great opportunity (or so we thought) to check out all that is new at Disney Springs on our way over to the boat dock.
Well, with it being dark it was really hard to get a sense of what it all looks like, except that it's so different than before. Also the crowds were insane. It was hard to walk, which made it even more difficult to get a perspective of everything. From what we did see though it looks cool and has a neat vibe. But I want to go back in the day and actually check out the stores and stop into a few of the bars for a drink, etc.

We were excited for our parents to get to experience a boat ride back to the resort, that would be a first for them!

Once we got on the boat, my mom decided it was time to take off her sweatshirt hahaha:rolleyes: It was SO humid, I have no idea how she lasted that long. She may have also dozed off on the boat hahaha;):D
It was so hard not to tease her, but I know she was exhausted after being up since 1:30am.

Dad and I though capped off the night with a drink in our room in our big kids cups ;) hah.

SUNDAY- JULY 10
IT’S MY BIRTHDAY! :D:D:D

I was so excited for this day! I always am, it’s my favorite day of the year haha, but especially excited to be on vacation in my happiest place.

I had tossed around so many ideas about what I wanted to do today…hop to all 4 parks? A little drinking around the world? I even mapped out a plan to hit all my favorite things from The MK welcome show, Tower of Terror, a Dole Whip with Coconut Rum in AK, Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire, Festival of Fantasy, Wishes, a Lapu Lapu at the Poly, and as much princess time as possible. While I think it was doable, I toned it back some to enjoy the day and not worry about rushing everywhere in the heat and killing ourselves. We made this a Magic Kingdom day with dinner at my (and my family’s) favorite place!

When we got to MK we headed straight to the mine train for our first FP+

So sunny and dad’s face hahaha:p

This is better :)

This was my parents first time on the ride and they loved it!!:D Alyssa and I couldn't wait for them to ride it because we love it so much too. My mom the whole time though, haha...she was like wait is this a big drop, what's going on?! She's not much of a ride person and I just kept telling her to calm down. I didn't sit with her the rest of the times we went on it ;) haha

The mine train is extra special to me too, the opening of the Mine Train was the first time that I was sent to Disney World for WORK.
Talk about dreams coming true.
I've shown them so many pictures and have shared every little detail about our whole work trip...everywhere we went and the cool things we got to see and do. They know how important that "work" trip was for me, sharing that with them in person was like reliving it all over again.

Back to this trip...we stopped so I could get some special sparkly birthday ears before visiting my princess friends!

I'm so mad at myself because I didn't make any notes with these visits:mad:

I do remember a few things though - Cinderella was up first and she had commented on my birthday and I had said Anna & Elsa told me to eat 56 cupcakes, or 28 cupcakes and a 28 layer cake but I needed help with all of that. Then she brought up Jaq and Gus helping if it were cheesecake haha

Aurora had said something about having fireworks for my birthday, but the fairies wouldnt be able to decide on a color, so they should just be in all colors

I don't remember anything with Rapunzel and Tiana besides loving them :( I asked my sister and parents so I hope they can remember!

As i'm typing i'm remember a little more haha. Rapunzel loved how sparkly our ears were, and said it was probably pascal out there throwing stuff from the trees to make them shine like that

Still nothing on Tiana, but I do remember her being great and clearly finding her funny:joyfull:..

I wish we could try it on our next trip but my nephew will be there and he will only be 15 months so I am sure we will be spending our time trying to figure out how to travel with a baby haha. Happy belated Birthday too! It is really funny that we all share a similar birthday. I turned 28 too actually :) I already told my family I will be spending my 30th birthday in Disney...it used to seem so far away....

My mom and I stopped for a photopass picture behind the castle

Pascal!

Then we noticed our photopass photographer, Mike, was from Bayonne, NJ...just two towns over from me!

Our turn at the sword in the stone...

And the wishing well :)

More photopass

Another pascal visit:D

Dad and Alyssa headed out just a few minutes ahead of us.
Mom and I stopped for our MK hat pictures

Back in the French Quarter!

And back to our room to see that my dad and sister took their extra time to decorate for me!:D

When we were reviewing pictures I thought it was so funny that in EPCOT, Alyssa and I both wore the Rapunzel hat and in Magic Kingdom we both wore the Elsa ears! So many choices, I love that we both picked the same in the same places haha

The scavenger hunt results…my sister was dying to hear what my plan was because I was so excited about it. When I told her we watched the parade she got mad and said that’s not fair. My mom and I disagree and I still think it was a great idea, there were no rules about not watching parades or shows, and we took the time to wait and watch the parade so we deserve every point for each character we saw during it.

SO with the parade character points...Team Best Day Ever is the winner:D
Without the parade points, Team Tiggerific wins by a small margin:grumpy:

After this we were all pretty tired, especially my parents after their early morning travels so we all laid down for a nap. Which for me lasted 10 minutes when I heard the craziest thunder and jumped out of bed to watch from outside our room. The lightning and thunder was incredible and one bolt was so close I was recording and when it hit I saw it out of the corner of my eye and jumped. I ran inside and was like OMG haha. My dad then came out with me and we watched for a while more with the lightning all around us. I recorded a ton of lightning strikes. We walked back inside and my mom and sister were like what is wrong with you, why were you out there?! Well, weather is my life, and so is Disney, and this was a pretty awesome combination of both and definitely cooler than the storms we get in NJ.
(also, even though i'm a meteorologist, this was stupid of me..don't go outside with thunder and lightning :) )
I LOVE the idea of a scavenger hunt! I laughed and smiled all the way through your photos and descriptions. :) I have to say, your Dad is just adorable! Great trip report! Love the French Quarter too!!

We had time before our Splash Mountain fastpass so decided to have an early lunch at Columbia Harbor House since we didn't eat breakfast and had an early dinner planned.

My dad has never been, but we’ve talked about it so much. When we walked in, we all knew what we wanted but my dad was looking at the menu and my sister snatched it from him and sternly said “you are getting a lobster roll.” He still wanted to look some more and she again was like “NO.” She can be so mean haha but we all knew she was right. My mom and sister went upstairs to get a table (my mom had no trouble today finding Alyssa haha) and while my dad and I were picking up the food, the CM was so excited it was my birthday she gave me a little chocolate cake! That was so nice of her, I never expected anything, I was just happy to be celebrating and wearing my birthday button.

When we sat down with my mom and Alyssa, they all sang happy birthday to me with a French fry candle haha. The not English speaking family next to us gave us awful looks. I didnt care, I was just happy to have a little cake!:)

I didn’t take pictures of our lunch…but my dad and sister had lobster rolls. Dad loved it! Mom and I split the fried shrimp platter. We always end up getting that, we love it so much- it’s a ton of food and a great deal!

At this point, Splash Mountain had gone down so we could redeem our fastpass at a later time. We had a later FP for Big Thunder Mountain so decided we’d hang onto it until then and hopefully it’d be up and running!
So we walked across the park and over to a family favorite…the peoplemover!

Mickey's Royal Friendship Faire was just ending when we walked through :)

Peoplemover time!!

We were laughing at mom taking the most unflattering pictures haha

I love this one!!

After the peoplemover, we noticed the wait for Buzz wasn’t too long so went for a spin!

I don't remember who won, it may have been Alyssa though!

Then one of the top things on my list was to watch Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire again...and get better pictures, so we walked over to the castle :)

While waiting, Move it Shake it was finishing up
