Trip Report 2018-2019 A Year in the Land (Disneyland)...a multi-trip report

Hello and welcome to my trip report for my year as an annual passholder to Disneyland. Me (Amy) and my husband (Brad) have been passholders of both Disneyland and Walt Disney World but this year we decided to be exclusive to just the Land. It was a little painful to give up going to WDW this year, we consider it our home park but we also enjoy Disneyland too. I think I have a little more fondness to it than Brad, but anyway.... So why are we passholders for DL exclusively this year instead of WDW or both parks. Well financially it didn't necessarily make sense. Brad is a big Star Wars fan and I'm a big Disney nerd so with Galaxy's Edge opening in the Land earlier than WDW that was a draw. And the D23 Expo is in Anaheim again this year so it checked boxes for both of us.

So I'm going to begin this report a little in the past, 2018, that's right so long ago! :) We traveled to Disneyland over Thanksgiving 2018 and bought our annual passes so that is where we will start the trip report.

Upcoming trips:
A. late March 2019
B. possibly (most likely) a solo trip for me over Easter 2019 (Why solo?...well Brad is a pastor and the congregation kind of expects him to be there over Easter. I'm a teacher and have a nice little break over Easter and the hubs is too busy over Holy week and Easter so he won't really notice I'm gone.)
C. Late June 2019 to celebrate our anniversary and birthdays all in June and in the same week. This trip will include Los Angeles, Sequoia National Park, Death Valley National Park, Joshua Tree National Park & Palm Springs as well as Disneyland (and perhaps if rumors are true our first entrance into Galaxy's Edge)
D. our last trip late August for Disneyland and D23 Expo

By the way...if any of you are in Disneyland when our paths cross it would be cool to have any meet ups or say hi. I've met a few awesome WDWMagic members in Walt Disney World and it has been so cool. Don't be afraid to say hi if you see us walking around too!:)

So let's start the first leg of the trip report: November 20-25 2018

Tuesday November 20
Brad and I both had a full day at work. My day should have been full of students but since it is Deer Hunting week (or at least the big gun hunting week) in Wisconsin and Thanksgiving week, our district gives the kids the week off and teachers report for two days of inservice. So it wasn't a hectic day for me. However there was a little kerfuffle in the plan for today. It involved our beloved and spoiled minature schnauzer Kapono.
IMG_5529.JPG

My boss said that we could leave at 3pm instead of 3:30pm so hubby picked me up on the way to drop off Kapono at the kennel. Kapono has only spent 2 days ever in this kennel (good experience) usually she stays with my sister but she was unable to care for her this time. So it was the first time Kapono was going to be spending an extended time in a kennel. So we arrived at the kennel and no one is there, even though it is check-in time and the main building for the kennel is unlocked. So we go inside and wait thinking that maybe the owner is just busy at the house and will be out soon. After 5 minutes no one came even though dogs were barking in her house and in the kennel. So hubs gives her a call. And in the mean time I'm concerned that she left the kennel unlocked! Anyway, the lady was surprised we were calling and had lost track of time and was an hour away from the kennel. But more importantly she was surprised that we were there because she hadn't written down our reservation!!!! Hubs had the email confirmation though. Luckily she had one run left. She said it was luckily for us, but really it was lucky for her!!!! I don't know what we would have done if that run wouldn't have been available though. Although hubs said one of our church members would have pitched in for us. So I took Kapono out into the fenced in yard area and when I let her in she happily ran into the open caged run. I was glad she seemed happy to be there but a little concerned now at the professionalism of the kennel owner. Fast forward to the end of our trip when we picked her up...Kapono had been a good girl there and was safe (and clean). So it all worked out and this over-protective dog mom was happy, and the kennel owner apologized a few times.

So anyway, after we dropped Kapono off we drove up to Minneapolis to the airport for our flight. We ended up being pretty early for our flight but we'd rather wait safely at the airport than be stressed out in traffic. Check in and security took less than 15 minutes so we had a decent meal and drinks at the Minnesota Wild (our favorite hockey team) teamed restaurant). We hadn't planned on eating here but I guess it was fate since we were wearing our Disney Minnesota Wild themed shirts.

The seats we were in used to be 1st class but now the company is going more the Spirit route and these seats were $45 more to the base ticket price. So for that we thought it was a deal to have slightly bigger seats and more foot space for the flight.

Adios Minnesota!

We flew into LAX and took an Uber to Anaheim. The traffic was a little heavy in the arrival/departure area so it took our Uber driver a little while about 10-15 minutes to get to us, but it didn't seem too bad. We made it to Anaheim in about 40 minutes (our driver was a speed demon) but that was okay with us. We checked into our hotel the Best Western Park Place Inn, literally across the street from the entrance as seen below. We went to the ticket booth and purchased/cashed in 4 day park hoppers for our annual passes with Max pass and gleefully entered Disneyland with about 40 minutes until park close!

OMG! I love your DL holiday park photos!! Great decorations, floats, etc. I thought it was fun that they had the women wearing roller blades (to mimic ice skates) with the white outfits. And that silver and blue tree--wow! Really, all the decorations throughout the park and parades were awesome.

New Orleans Square was uniquely decked out as well.

Amy!! Your pictures of Disneyland really really makes me wish I was back there:inlove::inlove:! Thank you also for sharing :) Enjoy your weekend!

I'm glad you are enjoying my pictures. Any plans to go to a Disney park soon? I have enjoyed your pictures from DL Paris, I saw some pictures online of DLP with snow it looked really pretty. I hope that you too have a good weekend!

Thanks. It is fun to see the different ways that WDW and Disneyland decorate. I'm glad you have enjoyed the pictures. I too thought it was cool to use the roller blades to simulate ice skating.

:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious: That really made me laugh!

That Christmas tour sounds so nice thank you for sharing !

I'm glad I gave you a laugh, and enjoyed hearing about the tour. I have been on quite a few Disney tours and I haven't regretted any of them.

A few pictures to finish up the parade from our Holidaytime tour. The big finale with Santa was coming up and I'm glad we went when we did because a few weeks later the sleigh part fell (with Santa on it) in the parade so it had to run the rest of the season without this float which is really cool. You may have noticed that Brad and I were wearing the same Disney Christmas shirts. Brad bought them at Kohl's for like $10 and we got a lot of compliments on them. Anyway, while Santa was going past we ended up getting a shout out from him. He was going past and was Ho ho Ho-ing and he looked at us and pointed and yelled out "great shirts!". We were tickled! Santa loved our shirts, and we knew we were for sure on the nice list!

The toy soldiers are my favorite but I really like the dancing reindeer too. They have some crazy personality. One time the MK Brad was "attacked" by one of them in a funny way, so I always laugh a little when I see them.

After the parade was done our tour was officially over, so we thanked our guide for giving us such an interesting tour. And then decided to head over to the the Disneyland hotel for some tiki time at Trader Sam's. We could walk there but we decided to take the monorail over to the Downtown Disney station and walk the the rest of the way. Luckily there wasn't much of a line for the monorail and we only waited a few minutes until it arrived.

We had a nice view though as we waited.

Well we got into Trader Sam's and it was packed, no place for Brad and Amy. We lurked around for a couple minutes but we had clearly hit it at a time when most people were just starting their time there. We could have still ordered a drink and stood around, we could have gone outside but all those tables were filled up when we walked in. So we decided to head to a different lounge where we could relax a little. At least we got to see the Christmas decorations in Trader Sam's.

We walked over to the Lounge at Steakhouse 55. Despite it being near Goofy's Kitchen it is very low key and it is a relaxing bar. I enjoyed this lounge on my solo trip a couple years ago and we have enjoyed it together before eating dinner at Steakhouse 55. We thought about sitting at the bar, because if you sit at the bar you can order the full restaurant menu. But we decided we wanted to sit in the comfy chairs and we wanted appetizers instead of a full steak dinner. If you sit at the couches/chairs in the lounge there is a separate appetizer/lounge menu for food.

Brad got the ever exciting rum and coke and I went with a Lagunitas. I have enjoyed this beer quite a few times at the Baseline Taphouse in Hollywood Studios so getting it here was my cheers to WDW while in Disneyland.

We saw Santa again while at the lounge, he did not give us a shout out about our shirts this time.

At the Lounge at Steakhouse 55

If you remember we ate our Plaza lunch at a supersonic record breaking speed, so we were looking forward to enjoying a meal at a leisurely pace.

Here is an overview of what we ordered.
347100

Crispy Pork ribs with sweet and sour sauce and toasted sesame seeds. These were good, not Morimoto Ribs good but still good.
347101

We got the truffle mac and cheese, this one of the only restaurant items you can order anywhere in the lounge. I LOVED it! Good strong truffle flavor and nice and cheesy.
347102

Herbed buttermilk chicken wings. These were tasty but a little greasy. These could have been ordered in the Nashville hot style, and despite enjoying the Nashville hot turkey at the Festival of the Holidays we were a little nervous about ordering these that way so we chickened out and ordered a mild version.
347103

And a look at the decorations leading into the restaurant.
347104

On Thanksgiving the Disneyland Hotel had a large fancy buffet offered for lunch/dinner. We thought about going but decided it was too expensive it was about $100-$125 a person. No thanks, we get nervous about eating restaurant stuffing since we like the stuff I make the best out of any stuffing (it was my Mom's recipe) so we passed on this and I had made an early Thanksgiving meal before we left on vacation. Anyway, it was cute to see some of the decorations still up.
347105

There was also a nice display for the Santa meet and greet area, this time when we saw it Santa was meeting guests and it was full of kids. I didn't really want to look like a creepy adult taking pictures of children meeting Santa so I pulled this picture out of the files of my 2015-2016 trip report. The area was decorated the same this year.
347112

Then we hopped on the monorail and headed back to Disneyland. Since we had Maxpass we had been able to stack up a nice pack of fastpasses.
347107

Our first fast pass was for Haunted Holiday!

An evening in Disneyland

Here are some pictures (again) of Haunted Mansion Holiday. The goal was to get a halfway decent picture of the gingerbread house in the ballroom and the "tree" in the ballroom. I took one and Brad took one with his phone and here is what we ended up with...

347113

347119

Well at least we will have the memories in our brain of it since the pictures aren't fantastic.
347114
347115

After Haunted we went on Indy and then Big Thunder Mt.
347116

347117

347118

After Thunder we might have done Jungle Cruise, but shortly after Big Thunder we mobile ordered some ice cream from Gibson Girl (so nice not to stand in line, even though the line was small once we got there).

I got the peppermint ice cream hot fudge sundae. So good! I only ate a little of the waffle cone bowl which was chocolate dipped with crushed candy canes. I'm not really a waffle cone kind of gal, I really just wanted the ice cream and hot fudge.
347120

Brad went with a Mickey chocolate chip cookie sundae, I think the base ice cream was just vanilla.

After enjoying ice cream we watched Believe in Holiday Magic fireworks from Main Street. We enjoyed the show even more this time and enjoyed seeing the projections on Main Street. It was during this viewing though that we really appreciated the size of Cinderella Castle at the MK during fireworks shows, fireworks on Main Street at the MK is just better than Main Street fireworks at Disneyland because it is just so hard to see the castle with the fireworks and really the only projections you can see is on the Main Street buildings. After this show we agreed that it's a small world area and Rivers of America are our favorite locations for Disneyland fireworks. This may change with the new Mickey Mix Magic (or whatever) show when we see it in March.

Anyway, here are some Main Street area pictures...

Some more pictures of Main Street and holiday fireworks.

A blurry close up zoom of the castle from midway down main Street. I was playing around somewhat poorly with my camera here.

It struck us funny how people at Disneyland got so excited for the "snow". Both Brad and I were like, dude if you want snow you should live in Wisconsin! (Although to be fair until this past Monday 1-28-19 our ground was literally bare of snow, just a couple traces here and there in our area. But that is an anomaly.)

Coming up: another ride on a favorite and "shopping" at Disneyland

Anyway, Cheers to you! Keep up the great TR!!!🍻

Yeah I know it is a California beer that I've only had at WDW until this time so that is what it reminded me of, but I get what you are saying. Although I recently saw it for sale at my local grocery store so I'll have to make a purchase soon. 🍺 I'm glad you are enjoying my report, thanks for reading.
