Trip Report 2018-2019 A Year in the Land (Disneyland)...a multi-trip report

Hello and welcome to my trip report for my year as an annual passholder to Disneyland. Me (Amy) and my husband (Brad) have been passholders of both Disneyland and Walt Disney World but this year we decided to be exclusive to just the Land. It was a little painful to give up going to WDW this year, we consider it our home park but we also enjoy Disneyland too. I think I have a little more fondness to it than Brad, but anyway.... So why are we passholders for DL exclusively this year instead of WDW or both parks. Well financially it didn't necessarily make sense. Brad is a big Star Wars fan and I'm a big Disney nerd so with Galaxy's Edge opening in the Land earlier than WDW that was a draw. And the D23 Expo is in Anaheim again this year so it checked boxes for both of us.

So I'm going to begin this report a little in the past, 2018, that's right so long ago! :) We traveled to Disneyland over Thanksgiving 2018 and bought our annual passes so that is where we will start the trip report.

Upcoming trips:
A. late March 2019
B. possibly (most likely) a solo trip for me over Easter 2019 (Why solo?...well Brad is a pastor and the congregation kind of expects him to be there over Easter. I'm a teacher and have a nice little break over Easter and the hubs is too busy over Holy week and Easter so he won't really notice I'm gone.)
C. Late June 2019 to celebrate our anniversary and birthdays all in June and in the same week. This trip will include Los Angeles, Sequoia National Park, Death Valley National Park, Joshua Tree National Park & Palm Springs as well as Disneyland (and perhaps if rumors are true our first entrance into Galaxy's Edge)
D. our last trip late August for Disneyland and D23 Expo

By the way...if any of you are in Disneyland when our paths cross it would be cool to have any meet ups or say hi. I've met a few awesome WDWMagic members in Walt Disney World and it has been so cool. Don't be afraid to say hi if you see us walking around too!:)

So let's start the first leg of the trip report: November 20-25 2018

Tuesday November 20
Brad and I both had a full day at work. My day should have been full of students but since it is Deer Hunting week (or at least the big gun hunting week) in Wisconsin and Thanksgiving week, our district gives the kids the week off and teachers report for two days of inservice. So it wasn't a hectic day for me. However there was a little kerfuffle in the plan for today. It involved our beloved and spoiled minature schnauzer Kapono.
IMG_5529.JPG

My boss said that we could leave at 3pm instead of 3:30pm so hubby picked me up on the way to drop off Kapono at the kennel. Kapono has only spent 2 days ever in this kennel (good experience) usually she stays with my sister but she was unable to care for her this time. So it was the first time Kapono was going to be spending an extended time in a kennel. So we arrived at the kennel and no one is there, even though it is check-in time and the main building for the kennel is unlocked. So we go inside and wait thinking that maybe the owner is just busy at the house and will be out soon. After 5 minutes no one came even though dogs were barking in her house and in the kennel. So hubs gives her a call. And in the mean time I'm concerned that she left the kennel unlocked! Anyway, the lady was surprised we were calling and had lost track of time and was an hour away from the kennel. But more importantly she was surprised that we were there because she hadn't written down our reservation!!!! Hubs had the email confirmation though. Luckily she had one run left. She said it was luckily for us, but really it was lucky for her!!!! I don't know what we would have done if that run wouldn't have been available though. Although hubs said one of our church members would have pitched in for us. So I took Kapono out into the fenced in yard area and when I let her in she happily ran into the open caged run. I was glad she seemed happy to be there but a little concerned now at the professionalism of the kennel owner. Fast forward to the end of our trip when we picked her up...Kapono had been a good girl there and was safe (and clean). So it all worked out and this over-protective dog mom was happy, and the kennel owner apologized a few times.

So anyway, after we dropped Kapono off we drove up to Minneapolis to the airport for our flight. We ended up being pretty early for our flight but we'd rather wait safely at the airport than be stressed out in traffic. Check in and security took less than 15 minutes so we had a decent meal and drinks at the Minnesota Wild (our favorite hockey team) teamed restaurant). We hadn't planned on eating here but I guess it was fate since we were wearing our Disney Minnesota Wild themed shirts.

IMG_5764.JPG

The seats we were in used to be 1st class but now the company is going more the Spirit route and these seats were $45 more to the base ticket price. So for that we thought it was a deal to have slightly bigger seats and more foot space for the flight.
IMG_5766.JPG

Adios Minnesota!
IMG_5767.JPG

We flew into LAX and took an Uber to Anaheim. The traffic was a little heavy in the arrival/departure area so it took our Uber driver a little while about 10-15 minutes to get to us, but it didn't seem too bad. We made it to Anaheim in about 40 minutes (our driver was a speed demon) but that was okay with us. We checked into our hotel the Best Western Park Place Inn, literally across the street from the entrance as seen below. We went to the ticket booth and purchased/cashed in 4 day park hoppers for our annual passes with Max pass and gleefully entered Disneyland with about 40 minutes until park close!

The Final Chapter of the Year in the Land.....

Okay folks thanks to those of your that have been following along with my crazy adventures in Disneyland, but this part of the report will be the last of the Disneyland adventures. Our pass expires in November and I thought of maybe one last trip, a solo trip, in early November but it just isn't going to work out. So this August trip will be the end of this journey, but other adventures will be had.

So here we go.....

The dates: August 18-25

The reason: Disneyland and D23 Expo

The players: the usual, Amy and Brad

The hotel: Candy Cane Inn (a new one for us)

First a little pre-trip drama (nothing too bad)
So one of the main purpose's of this trip was to attend the D23 Expo and this year the attendees were going to be allowed to make reservations for some parts of the Expo. Reservations were to open up on Friday August 16th at 2pm (our time, Central). The problem was my niece would be visiting us this weekend, she always visits on this particular weekend because it is our town's festival and she likes different events. So when she arrived we told her about the reservations and how important it would be to us to take a break from whatever we were doing and get online for them. We didn't want her to be ignored but she is a big Disney fan and a big fan of us so she was okay with taking a break. We gave her a lot of options to do that Friday and the option she chose would have us home in time for us to make reservations and then make the next festival event that she really wanted to do.

So on Friday came and Brad went to play a round of early morning golf, and hurt himself playing so he had to seek some medical attention (nothing major). So anyway, when it came time to get online for Expo reservations Brad wasn't there to help. Luckily my niece was, so she got on one computer and I was on another. The pre-excitement of the reservations was getting to her too and she was excited for us and nervous, she didn't want to screw it up for us. I assured her she wouldn't. So 1:58pm came and we start hitting the refresh button like crazy. And the reservation system was screwed up....D23 sent out a message that reservations would open in ANOTHER hour. Ugh. So at 2:58 B was now home but resting so niece and I started hitting refresh again and AGAIN the reservation system was a failure! And reservations would now be on Saturday at 2 pm (our time). Ugh!!!! So frustrating, so now we would have to waste another day with this reservation thing.

The bummer was that it seemed like we were wasting all this time on D23 stuff and neglecting our niece. So again when we were planning our Saturday we would have to stop at 2pm and do this stuff. She was a good sport about it and what she wanted to do on Saturday was participate in the Bingo game that was from 11 am-2pm, and was just a couple blocks from our house. So I would leave a little early to be online and she and Brad could stay and play.

So Saturday came we played Bingo and it was wrapping up around 1:30 when I had to leave and she actually came with me and Brad finished watching our cards. We did not win. So again we set up the computers and the time came and right on the dot we entered the site and this time we were greeted with the virtual queue.

The green man.
IMG_9466.JPG

So while we waited for the green man to finish his walk she and I played Farkle. She was as excited as I was with his journey. The journey he took lasted about 40 minutes, and by the time I got into reservation all the Store passes for the whole weekend were gone and the big panels. Our priorities were Mickey's of Glendale store and the Parks panel. Gone, all gone. I was able to get at least 2 other panel passes a day, some were our back ups. But there were plenty of error messages and things that disappeared. In the end after texting another friend that was going to Expo and got into the system after me, I felt very lucky to get the reservations I got. After I wrapped up the green man still had some walking to do on Brad's computer so we decided to see what was left for reservations on his pass when he got in. It took the green man on Brad's computer an hour and fifteen minutes from the start of reservations to get in and by then there was nothing available, literally. We clicked on every option that had any inkling of interest to us and nothing. Well, at least we had some through my pass. Later in the week when we were actually in California when the reservations actually appeared in the app, we somehow ended up with reservations for four panels on Sunday that we had talked about going to but had gotten error messages when we tried to book. Anyway, long story (sorry) so now with reservations made we could relax and enjoy the rest of our visit with our niece. She was a rockstar by putting up with our crazy, and I did bring her home some souvenirs from Expo as a thanks.

A last thought about these D23 Expo reservations, I liked that the online reservations were offered. However I hate how it was set up. It seemed (from people we talked to) that some people got in right away and were able to snag everything. Attendees were allowed to make 1 show pass, 1 store pass, and 3 talent passes (for signings) per day, and there was no time limit for making reservations. Also I guess there was a way to get a direct link into the pass system and skip the walking man, so essentially line jumpers. I would like to see the online system come back but it should be somehow more fair.

Okay.....Sunday August 18

As I said it was our town festival and Brad had to be in the town parade, our flight left around 6pm. So as soon as he was done with the parade we had to leave for the airport. My sister and her husband always come down to watch the parade and take their daughter home. So this time they also got to take my dog with them and lock up my house as we high tailed it to the airport.

We got to the airport around 4 pm, luckily it we were flying out of the smaller terminal in Minneapolis so security wasn't a big hassle and we had plenty of time. We even had a nice meal at the airport.

Chorizo burgers
IMG_9487.JPG

And while waiting B fell asleep in the terminal. This was supposed to be a picture of him sleeping but he woke up and smiled.
IMG_9488.JPG

On the plane for the first flight. We had a 40 minute connection in Phoenix. The time of the connection made me a little nervous but we had plenty of time. I also figured if we missed the connection in Phoenix, it isn't too far of a drive to Disneyland.
IMG_9489.JPG

Finally we landed in California, we had flown into SNA/John Wayne airport. After getting our bags we got and Uber. That ride was interesting, the guy was interesting at first he was originally from Italy. So he enjoyed talking about that and then he starts talking about how Uber drivers don't make a lot of money and how much he has to drive to make enough money. He also starts talking about how bad people are about tipping and blah blah blah. This annoyed me because it was like he was basically telling us to tip him. I don't need a sob story buddy and it actually makes me NOT want to tip you and I usually tip the Uber drivers well, usually the top suggested tip on the app. But this time because he annoyed me I tipped the lowest amount suggested. I think he then rated me lower because my 5 star rating went down to 4.94 after that ride. Jerk.

Anyway, enough about that. We soon arrived at the Candy Cane Inn and our room was near the front of the resort like I had requested. We dropped off our bags and about an hour after landing we were at Disneyland. We decided to ride Big Thunder Mt as it was a walk on and after we had some time and Brad wanted to go to Galaxy's Edge.

IMG_9491.JPG

Smuggler's Run was a basically a walk on.
IMG_9495.JPG

Hello Hondo!
IMG_9498.JPG

Brad and I ended up being pilots and towards the end of the ride the system broke. We were in the pod for awhile and took a few pictures and enjoyed the little interaction that was playing on the small screens with Chewy and Hondo about the break down.
IMG_9500.JPG

IMG_9505.JPG

Eventually we were moved to another "Falcon". So basically we got two flights for the price of one!

We had to watch the safety spiel again and as I looked at the screen I noticed a hidden Mickey on the side.

IMG_9514.JPG

Oh and this was a picture of Chewy Brad took during the breakdown.
IMG_8840.JPG

Oh and this was us before we got into line for the attraction. Clearly we are a little travel weary.
IMG_8853.JPG

Once we got off the attraction we were escorted out of our pod and into the elevator. Apparently we were the last ones in there. When we exited the attraction the cast member behind us announced to the crowd of cast members in the front of the attraction that it was now clear. Cool! We were also one of the last people in the land and had security behind us making sure we got out but we were able to take a few empty Galaxy's Edge pictures.

The reservation system for D23 panels, etc., sounded very complicated, and even worse than that, if you're right about some people being able to access a direct link, etc. Good grief.

As for your Uber driver, any person in the service industry who sob stories about low tips, etc., is an immediate turn-off. Like yourself, I'd tip at the lowest level for someone like that.

Love your Galaxy's Edge pictures, especially the one with you and Brad as "pilots" at the controls!! :joyfull:

As we made our way out of Galaxy's Edge we both agreed we could use a little snack. It was only about 12:10am so Main Street was open for another 50 minutes. We ended up getting chocolate covered peanut butter sandwiches and enjoyed them on a bench near the Jolly Holiday. It was very enjoyable because there weren't many people and it felt like "our" park. Eventually we made our way out of the park and back to the Candy Cane Inn. Once there (it was about a 7-10 minute walk) we pulled out the clothes we wanted to wear the next day and our pj's and crashed into bed. Brad had been up for about 22 hours and me about 20 so we were ready for bed!

The reservation idea is a good one, they had passes before at the last Expo but you had to get those at the Expo. So this online reservation seemed like a good way to do it and not waste time at the Expo. I just wish it was set up like getting fast passes at the parks. Maybe it will be next time. My understanding from what I've heard and read, so maybe it isn't true is that it was an outside Disney company that was contracted for this reservation system and they weren't prepared for the traffic the site was going to get. I guess we'll see what happens in 2021.

The thought of that Uber driver still irritates me, his trying to guilt us into tipping big wasn't professional and actually came back to bite him in the behind.

Thanks for the compliment about us as pilots, B was really in his element!

Disneyland day!!!!

Good morning beautiful!
IMG_9528.JPG

Hello Walt! Hello Mickey!
IMG_3673.JPG

As usual we did our rope drop of Alice in Wonderland we were going to be the first guests on the ride when two teens made a last minute switch in direction and beat us to it. Oh well second is fine. We got our own caterpillars and enjoyed the trip to Wonderland. This is my favorite Disney dark ride.
IMG_9534.JPG

Then we continued on our magical journey around Fantasyland with Dumbo, Storybook boats, teacups, Matterhorn and Casey Jr.

And just me being a Disney dork.
IMG_8876.JPG

Since I had my small world ears on I wanted to go on small world and I knew that this early in the morning we stood a good chance of getting our own boat.
IMG_8885.JPG

And we did get our own boat, so with my annoying people yapping during the ride, it truly was the happiest cruise that ever sailed.
IMG_9542.JPG

We had recently listened to one of my Disney podcasts together and it was on the topic of the Roastie Toasties at the popcorn carts, and we had known about these before but this trip we made a special effort to look at all of them. Plus it is fun to say....roastie toastie, roastie toastie!

This is the space girl in Tomorrowland, which is where we went after small world. There we did Space/Hyperspace Mt, Star Tours, and Buzz.
IMG_9548.JPG

IMG_9549.JPG

On the way to Tomorrowland we had a practically perfect encounter with Mary Poppins. I have no idea by my head is at such an angle.
IMG_8895.JPG

We also took at look at the damage Matterhorn, a couple of days before arriving a chunk of the Matterhorn fell off. Luckily it happened before park open so there were none injuries. But that meant only one track was running so that increased wait times, which made getting fast passes a must! It was also a little scary riding before I kept envisioning a chunk falling on my.

Star Tours fun! Especially when it is basically a walk on!
IMG_3692.JPG

Rumor was that these rocks are going away (notice the green construction walls around the set on the other side of the walkway). I kind of like the rocks, but they are referred to as the french fries. So I thought I'd get some last pictures of them.
IMG_3695.JPG

IMG_3696.JPG

We headed to Main Street to catch the Dapper Dans. We had some extra time so I explored while Brad waited for his "friends". The candy shop was making English toffee. Yay! I was hoping for a free sample but I guess I didn't drool enough on the window!

Then it was off to Big Thunder Mt, except we entered Adventureland, no biggie we took the cut across to get there.

We lucked out with row 15!
IMG_9560.JPG

Then we were a little hungry and decided to grab one of the special snacks for the Haunted Mansion's 50th anniversary. At the Royal Street Verandah we had the fritters with pimento cheese and Ghost Pepper ranch dipping sauce. All of it was fantastic!

On our morning journey we also saw Ariel roaming around and met up with Minnie Mouse.
IMG_8887.JPG

IMG_8900.JPG

Then we went to the Riverbelle Terrace for lunch. We were doing the Fantasmic dining package. We did the same meal back in March and loved it. This time we just enjoyed it, my short ribs could have used some more sauce and Brad wished he had gotten the ribs again instead of the Cornish game hen. But with that said we didn't regret eating there. Although I felt bad for the guy that the next table, during his meal he got a bloody nose, it was a gusher. He looked really embarrassed and did his best to hide it even though by putting his head down that made it keep bleeding more. That kind of stuff doesn't bother me and I wanted to tell him that but I didn't want him to feel worse.

I had thought about buying one of the vests like Rey's but ultimately decided not to, I didn't know what treasures there were going to be at the Expo and I didn't want to spend all my money yet.

I really like the picture of you two with Mary Poppins. (Perhaps the tilt of your head was to acknowledge Mary's wide brimmed hat?) ;)

As for the Dapper Dans -- I can be oblivious at times, but I don't recall ever seeing them with those mikes before. Is this something for DL only? Don't believe I've ever seen them mike'd up at WDW.

Halloween decorations were fun, but in August?! :jawdrop: They're pushing the season!! :p

The Dans have been mic'd in Disneyland for quite awhile, which is good because it makes it much easier to hear and better for their voices too I would assume anyway. I thought the last time I saw them in WDW they had microphones too.

I actually was hoping that that the Halloween decorations would have been fully out on Main Street too because we hadn't seen it at Disneyland before. But alas only in Frontierland and in the shops.

Wow--it seems like you accomplished so much & it's only lunchtime!! I'm tired just reading about it!!

I think because of the size of Disneyland and with their maxpass system it is easy to get a lot of stuff done. Oh and we were getting tired too, there will be a nap in the future!

SAd to see things coming to an end at DL. I've never been to DL, but it looks amazing. It looks more "homey", if that is the right word? One day, maybe, I will get to go there. In the meantime, loving your reports! thanks:)

I think you are right Disneyland does have a bit of a homey feel to it, I hope you are able to get there some day. Thanks for the kind words about my report!
