2014 ICS Elite Eight: Discussion Thread

They are loads of fun. Especially for an 8 - 12 year old. I gave a "collected works of Herge" set to my kid a few Christmas's ago. When the movie came out, she wanted desperately to go see it. That didn't work out, but we did watch it together on facetime (her in Maryland and me here in ATL, playing it on Netflix (or whatever stream I dug up).

It was ok...but we both agreed the books are better. They didn't pick the best of the graphic novel stories to base it on. Frankly, it would work better as a miniseries as opposed to a feature film, but I don't think Spielberg has done miniseries since Band of Brothers (he did do Band of Brothers, right?)...otherwise, since the 90s (which, if you are bored, his two 90s miniseries are on Netflix...Young Indiana Jones Adventures and Amazing Stories).
They should have go for Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon.

In fact, my two cents, one of the things I love (and hate) about SA is vacation days.

The schedule is part of the challenge, and having the comp drag on for literally months and months, while it makes it epic, is also quirky, as it's hard to pin down when people can rejoin the fray who have been eliminated.

That's why there have been suggestions to run multiple comps at the same time...though no firm plans that I know of.

I agree. I really enjoy the VD twist to the game, but I think I have mentioned this before- I think they aren't as valuable as they should be in concept. For example, for a lot of the time we at team land weren't too concerned about the due date, because we knew we always had those to fall back on. If there were fewer, it would be more of a strategy and helpful tool.

But, who am I to try and make changes to SA. That competition is remarkable:D

Nothing stops me from giving my two cents. <grin>

But yeah, it's a great comp.

I get why they are there (they weren't there until later in Season 1, and I remember when they got added and why), and I do think being able to push a day or two is important sometimes, but pushing WEEKS?

We literally had a challenge last year that went on for nearly 6 weeks due to both teams using vacation days. It was insane (ok maybe I'm remembering wrong and exaggerating a bit, but it was at least 3 - 4 weeks!)...

It was better this year.

As all who have worked with me know, I prefer not to use them (even though I have, and would, they are a strategic asset, but I think the goal should ALWAYS be to meet the date up front, and that should be considered as a team when planning out how to divvy up work and spend your collective time).

I think that would make sense in the summer when people are, for the most part, more free. But in a lot of busier times of the year, I don't know how practical that could be, because not everyone would sign up for everything.
Do any convo's know how many comps will actually take place in 2015? I'm curious now:p:D

I'll add, not being able to use vaca days for the final hurt my team a lot. I was having a really rough and busy patch in my own life, and while my team supported the heck out of me, just couldn't churn out nearly what was planned.

The only thing that came together the way we planned was the Frontierland video.

The reason why there was so much DTD stuff (which was part of what led to the loss) was that I didn't have time to encapsulate all the fantastic work @tcool did on that into something more balanced with the rest of the content.

We literally just ran out of time. Vaca days would have been useful.

That being said, I deserved the loss, cause we aimed high, and shot low. And, as Team Lead, that was my fault for giving that direction.

Yes, we all do.

I suspect jdm will post the tentative schedule in the ICS thread shortly.

The general idea is that we carve off all the silly ideas, then give it out to the rest of the community to figure out what works best for us all (including new ideas/suggestions)...

Personally, I didn't like to use them either, but more because I was just so excited for the proposal day to come to see the submissions and reviews, I didn't want to wait!:p:rolleyes:

I wholly agree. Submission days are amongst the highlights of my existance in Imagineering.

I may sometimes be hyper-critical, but as most of you have gotten to know and/or work with me, it's a personality quirk, not personal (and sometimes I play it up as a character gag, a "role" I fill, if you will).

It's always amazing to see how creative other people are and what they put together.

Even better when it's a group like we had for SA where we kept raising the bar each week.

I think everyone who did SA should be very proud of all that was done. Also, that was the first comp (that I recall) where NO ONE missed a deadline.

Exactly, I love those days. And SA really was great. Amazing and well rounded teams, and very high competition continually getting tougher made it so awesome.
