Well, we can all agree there are several ways to do it, but the polygonal lasso tool is there for that specific reason. To select strange shaped items for using in a different layer. The most inconsistant thing to do is use the eraser. As shown in the tutorial above, mistakes are made. With the lasso, they are not. It's MUCH quicker.
