I've been a member of WDWMagic for years and didn't realize that a Disneyland section even existed! I'm so glad as I'm planning my first ever trip to Disneyland this summer and I've read some great suggestions from so many of you on here (Actually its my first trip to California ever!! - btw you Californians have an amazing state). Even still I have some questions and want to double check some of my ideas with anyone willing to lend a hand. Unfortunately, it seems you can find WDW advice all over the net but not so much for Disneyland.

Ok here I go.....

1 - Just curious if anyone has ever stayed at the Anabella Hotel - Concierge level? I looked it up on Tripadvisor and the comments range from raves to outright bad reviews. We booked it as it had a nice pool as we intend to do some pool time and the concierge level building has great beds so they say.
2- We've been told the hotel is walking distance to DL and that you can take a short cut through the Grand Californian Hotel. Does anyone know anything about this shortcut??
3- Next and most importantly, at this point I'm just at a total loss as to how to navigate the park and what to do what day. We have 2 full days at DL as we arrive in the evening the day before on Saturday. We're going to be there on Sunday August 24 and Monday 25th.

My priorities are all the attractions that DL has that WDW doesn't (e.g. Matterhorn, Indy, Nemo), all of Fantasyland, and the attractions that have slight to significant differences (e.g. Pirates, Space Mountain, HM). And lets not forget the fireworks and Fantasmic.

With respect to CA, I'm torn. On the one hand, I'd like to take a peak and ride Monsters, Screamin, Soarin, Aladdin and Toy Story, but I'm not sure where to fit those into my trip. But at the same time, I don't want to take too much time away from DL given that i've never been there and dont want to spend the day going from ride to ride and forgetting to soak up the ambience and architecture.

The next rub is that the friend i'm traveling with is not a big Disney fan and agreed to tack on a few days onto our multi day California trip so I could see DL. His one request is that we return to the hotel in the afternoon so he can soak in the pool, have a cocktail and shower before returning to the park. So whatever I figure out in terms of itinerary has to include these breaks.

Anybody have any suggestions as to how to fit all this into a 2 day trip?? I read someone's suggestion that you should get to the park when it opens head to Indy, grab a Fastpass for that, then go ride Pirates, HM, and Splash, return to Indy and then head to I believe Matterhorn and Nemo or Space Mountain. On the other hand, I've read to get to the park when it opens and power walk over to Nemo and then Matterhorn. I just don't know if I want to spend my first day in DL running around like that. But then again i'm afraid if I don't i'll never get to ride Nemo. Maybe do the power walk to Nemo on Monday which should be less crowded? Any suggestions?

4 - For the fireworks and Fantasmic how much time prior to the show do you need to line up?

5- What are the lines like at CA in the early afternoon?

6 - I'd also like to eat at Blue Bayou for lunch and I think I'd like to do that on Monday when the park will be less crowded..good idea???

7 - Finally, any other tips, suggestions etc. for a WDW veteran visiting DL for the first time??
Thanks so much to whoever even attempts to answer one of my convoluted questions. LOL I promise if anyone has any WDW questions i'm there anytime to answer them.

3- Next and most importantly, at this point I'm just at a total loss as to how to navigate the park and what to do what day. We have 2 full days at DL as we arrive in the evening the day before on Saturday. We're going to be there on Sunday August 24 and Monday 25th.
Fortunately, DL is much smaller than MK and easier to navigate. And I'm sure you've read this, but Sundays are very busy. But...most SoCal schools go back that Monday, so that might bring down the crowds.

I'm torn, too. I usually tell people to go, because unlike a lot of people, I like DCA. But since you only have two days and want to take it all in, I'd say skip it.

A break is always a good idea. I always say this, but...I'd get to the park at opening when the crowds are light. Go on the big rides (Indy, Space, Subs) and stock up on some fastpasses. Hang on to those and go back to the hotel. Then when you come back, use those fastpasses and enjoy the park at night.

Things to hit in the morning are Space, Indy, and the Subs. And maybe Splash.

Matterhorn, Pirates Thunder, and HM's lines don't take long. They might look long, but it goes by fast.

Personally, I like to start in Tomorrowland. Go on Space while the line is short and grab a fastpass, too. Then do Matterhorn (and in your case, Subs). By that time, the fastpass time has arrived and I head on over to Adventureland to fastpass Indy...and ride it if the line is short. That's how I start my day.

4 - For the fireworks and Fantasmic how much time prior to the show do you need to line up?
If there are two showings of Fantasmic (I think there will be), I'd see the 10:30 one because there are less people. People start getting seats 3 hours early for the first showing.

For the fireworks, I like a seat right in front of the castle, so I get there an hour to an hour and a half prior to the show.

5- What are the lines like at CA in the early afternoon?
Eh, it all depends on the day. But they aren't too bad. I think for the big stuff you'll see 45 minute waits.

6 - I'd also like to eat at Blue Bayou for lunch and I think I'd like to do that on Monday when the park will be less crowded..good idea???
Sure! I hear lunch is better than dinner.

Hope this helps!

LOL Well I say this because we're spending about 11 - 12 days or so in California total and California just has so much variety. We're starting off in Napa for a few days, then heading to Muir woods and San Fran for 3 days. Then we're staying at a resort in Marina, about 15 minutes from Carmel for 3 days. During this time, we intend to explore the coast in that area down to Big Sur. Then we're heading down to Hearst Castle and Santa Barbara. And ending with our trip to Disneyland. We decided to do DL instead of LA and San Diego. I figure I'll do that in a future trip when CA renovations are done.

As for your suggestions thanks so much. But do you think I should skip Nemo that Sunday or try to see it so i won't have to worry about it on Monday. What do you think of the reverse idea about heading to Adventureland first?

Initially, I thought head to Nemo first and then get off and do Matterhorn. Speaking of Nemo, whats the best way to head to Nemo. Someone suggested that I should not cut through tomorrowland but continue to the next spoke in the hub that takes you into Fantasyland I think. Believe it or not I can't find a DL guide map anywhere on line. I've tried for days to find one.

Go Sunday first thing and see if you can get on, so if anything happens, you still have Monday to get on.

What do you think of the reverse idea about heading to Adventureland first?
It's a very good idea. Maybe do that Monday morning if you are able to ride Nemo on Sunday?

Most crowds tend to go to Tomorrowland for Space and the Subs. Adventureland and NOS are virtually empty first thing. It's so relaxing...I love it. So yes, definitely do it. Maybe one day Tomorrowland first and the other Adventureland.

http://www.intercotwest.com/common/imgs/resortGuide/disneylandMapLarge.jpg <- map. :) (it's a bit dated, but nothing has moved )

The idea you stated sounds good. To go that way you would pass the Tomorrowland entrance and walk towards the Matterhorn (so you're technically not going through Fantasyland). If you keep walking forward, you'll hit the Subs line. So looking at the map, you're going to the right of the caste toward the Matterhorn.

hmm never stayed there I always stay at Hojos, but it looks like a nice hotel plus its pretty close to the resort entrances.

2- We've been told the hotel is walking distance to DL and that you can take a short cut through the Grand Californian Hotel. Does anyone know anything about this shortcut??
When walking from Anabella walk north on S. Disneyland drive towards the hotels and the Grand entrance is on the right and you can cut through the lobby and then follow the signs inside showing how to get to DTD. It will take you to next to Club Libby Lu and the park entrances are to the right.

3- Next and most importantly, at this point I'm just at a total loss as to how to navigate the park and what to do what day. We have 2 full days at DL as we arrive in the evening the day before on Saturday. We're going to be there on Sunday August 24 and Monday 25th.

DLR has a huge advantage of being a smaller resort and everything is a lot closer.

I'd check out DTD on your Sat. night its nice to walk through and I like DLR's DTD over WDW's. I think the buildings/area are nicer.
Hmm I'd check out DCA, theres a lot there that some people and other sites dont give it credit for.

I think you'll be surprised how much you can get done with in the first few hours of opening. The suggestion is a pretty good one plus with getting a fast pass you'll have already secured a place in line.

But then again i'm afraid if I don't i'll never get to ride Nemo. Maybe do the power walk to Nemo on Monday which should be less crowded? Any suggestions?

Nemo is iffy with its line. I think it opens with Magic Mornings so those people are already in line, but I think magic Mornings are on Sun, Tues, Thurs, Sat. So Mon I think would be a good choice and if its too big of a line I would try back at closing makeing it the last ride of the trip or high tail it after the after fireworks.

4 - For the fireworks and Fantasmic how much time prior to the show do you need to line up?
Nicole already covered this but if watching from the castle isnt a priority then I recommend watching from Small World mall or even from the Innoventions balcony. From Small World you will miss out on the castle effects but you dont have to fight the big crowd afterwards. Innoventions you can see everything but Im not sure if they play the music though.

Like Nicole said watch the 10:30 showing of Fantasmic its less crowded than the first. The DL website is showing that there are no preformances of Fantasmic on Mon. But fireworks are on both nights.

The hours
Sun
DL-8am-12am
DCA-10am-9pm

Mon-
DL-9am-10pm
DCA-10am-7pm

5- What are the lines like at CA in the early afternoon?
DCA's lines are not all that bad. Many rides have single rider so if you dont mind being split up its always an option.
DCA's single rider attractions-
Soarin'
Grizzly
Tower
Screamin'
Maliboomer
Mullholland Madness
Toy Story Midway Mania

Theres a handful that I say you can skip like Muppets, Playhouse, Bugs land attractions, almost everything on Paradise Pier (do ride Screamin, and Toy Story)unless your a thrill seeker. Soarin if you've already been on the Epcot one are the same only it makes more since at DCA to be traveling over CA :)

Must dos are the ones you listed as well as the DCA preview center which should be opened by then too. Its located in the Winery.

6 - I'd also like to eat at Blue Bayou for lunch and I think I'd like to do that on Monday when the park will be less crowded..good idea???
Wow I havent eatten there since the new menu came out.

7 - Finally, any other tips, suggestions etc. for a WDW veteran visiting DL for the first time??
For you being a WDW vetran I think the biggest shock for everyone is the difference in the size of the parks. DL packs in a lot of them in its small area.

Another thing is how much history is really behind the park.

Hmm thats all I can think of for right now. But I'll be back later, hopefully everything I posted make since. lol

Yikes. If there is a Magic Morning that Sunday then it looks like heading to Adventureland first might be the better idea and saving Nemo for Monday morning or late Sunday night after the fireworks and Fantasmic. Plus it might be nice to ride Pirates and Indy first thing on Sunday that way I know I can fit them in again later that day or Monday as I must ride each multiple times. :sohappy: woo hoo

Still not sure where i'm going to fit DCA in. I'm thinking that I should head there after lunch at DL for 2 hours each day.

I've heard the complaint from WDW veterans that DL is so small. But I'm actually looking forward to that. I think the lack of space allowed the imagineers to spend more time on the architecture and I believe it makes the park have a more intimate feel...well based on the pictures i've seen anyway. I recently saw a video podcast where the videographer sat on top of a main street vehicle, I assume a double decker bus, and videotaped the entire ride all the way down to the castle and around the hub. I was, in a word, speechless. Main Street was so quaint and so detailed. And the hub around the castle was beautiful.

Again thanks so much for your advice. I really appreciate it. Both of you Rock!

A few more questions... sorry I can't help myself....

Is the Parade of Dreams worth it? Where does the parade route run through at DL?

I just forgot about Jungle Cruise..any significant differences? I do plan to see the Tiki Room of course, as I haven't seen the original since WDW's 25th Anniversary.

Any special snacks a la dole whips that DL is known for that I might not be aware of??

That might be a good idea then you can say that you saw DCA before its big makeover. :)

Yea theres a very intimate feeling at DL vs. the MK. I think Adventureland and NOS are two lands that packs in the biggest punch in such a small area not only the rides but all the buildings are all important to each other. Also something I noticed when I was at MK theres no trees well theres trees just not a lot. At DL the hub may have lost the old olive trees but its still every much still the Hub but with smaller trees. Same goes for a lot of the lands haveing a lot of nice big trees well maybe not Toontown after all no one wants the firework fallout burning it down haha.

I think if you liked that podcast video you might also like these 2 videos I found on youtube its from a DVD Im not sure which one though. There behind the scenes looks at HM and Pirates.

Is the Parade of Dreams worth it? Where does the parade route run through at DL?
I think its worth it but I think it all depends on if you like parades. I love Parade of Dreams the show stop is so wonderful. Speaking of parades theres also a Prince Caspian pre parade and the Grand Marshal pre parades. The first showing it runs from Small World mall to Main Street and the 2nd show goes from Main Street to Small World.
You can see the route on the map, since its a bit hard to explain :)
http://www.intercotwest.com/common/i...ndMapLarge.jpg (same map Nicole posted Im not sure why I cant find a newer one online, the newer ones just have more detail)

I just forgot about Jungle Cruise..any significant differences? I do plan to see the Tiki Room of course, as I haven't seen the original since WDW's 25th Anniversary.
DL's Jungle was updated just before the 50th, with a very cool water cannon effects, the guns are still there, and the end has some pretty cool parihanas. Speaking of Tiki Room its pretty much brand new it was just redone before the 50th it just celebrated its 45 anniversary and had a merch event this past Sun. So if your into merch like that there still might be some left in late Aug.
Incase your interested the merch for the event-

Any special snacks a la dole whips that DL is known for that I might not be aware of??

Ahh yes Dole whips from the Tiki Bar and then you can bring it in the the Tiki Room too(unless things have changed). Nothing like a dole whip while watching the birdies sing:lol:

I cant think of any others...

I forgot one more question...
what are the lines like at the Fantasyland attractions, in particular Peter pan, Pinnochio, Alice and Toad?

Peter Pan always seems to have a long line, Pinnochio isnt that bad of a line at night as goes for the other 3. Theres also Casey (my personal favorite loved it when I was 6 and still love it 14 years later) and Storybook.
Careful with the timeing though since Storybook closes until the parade is over(I think it has to do with walkway issues or the parade sound being so loud?) Also Pinnochio, Snow, Peter, Toad and maybe the Carousel all close prior to the fireworks and reopen shortly after, as goes for the walkway between the castle and Matterhorn.

Ahhh I wish I was there now. :(

^Me too. I never get tired of seeing the Pinnochio unit during the show stop.

Oh yea, I cant remember if MK has a candy store but you can buy freshly made candy from the Candy Palace on Main Street (I recommend everything! :D). You can tell which are made in park and which are shipped in by the packaging stickers, the ones made in park I think have a YOAMD's stickers on the front and also have no nutrition facts on them. Pooh Corner in Critter Country and Marclines Confections in DTD also have freshly made candy but theres nothing like the ones from Main Street.

If your big on merch. I think you'll like DL's Main Street.

Look up at the-
Firehouse window with the light on for Walt.
Above Snow White for the Evil Queen.
Jungle Cruse facade has a real bird in a cage
Above Pirates to see the Dream Suite which you might win :)
Above Cafe Orleans is Club 33

A few other things-
When walking through the castle theres a spike in the ground word has it that its the original center of DL(I myself dont think so I think the hub was since Fantasyland was once so little makeing the castle closer to the edge of the park(the area behind Casey is where the tracks once sat))

The Lilly Belle is one of the original cars that once went around the park was just redone for the 50th and looks great. To ride it I think you need to be on the "Walk in Walts Footsteps Tour". Speaking of trains theres 5 locomotives that go around DL although I think on is still out for refrub. Ward Kimball arrived just in time for the 50th.

At DCA-
The Disney Animation building is really a hidden gem.
Blue Sky Cellar (AKA New DCA Preview Center) opens in Aug. I think I posted that already.....
Free tortillas at the tortilla factory same goes for the bread across the way.

Thats all I can think of for now. Im sure Nicole will step in with more :)

Thanks for all your tips everyone and for taking the time to respond and help me out! Taking notes in my trip notebook to remind me of everything. Thanks so much.

Will definitely look into the candy and churros! YUM!

Based on the above, I think I've more or less settled on the idea of starting my first day, a sunday, by heading first to Adventureland and New Orleans Square. Then saving Nemo for the end of the day that Sunday or first thing Monday morning. If that Sunday isn't an early entry for Disney resort guests I might change my mind. I need to find that out first. Given that I want to soak up the atmosphere as much as possible, not sure I want to spend my first day running over to Nemo and the Matterhorn. As for California Adventure, I think I'm just going to play it by ear. However, if the drive that Saturday from Hearst castle to Anaheim goes by quickly, we might spend the money and get a 3 day park hopper and spend that first night at CA. We booked our Castle Tour at 10:30 so we should be done by 12:30 and will be hitting the road shortly thereafter. Fingers crossed, we don't get stopped by the cops speeding down the highway. LOL

Wow going on a tour on Cal how cool I'v lived here all my life and have hardly seen the whole state. In So Cal I'v only been to DLR, Knotts, New Port Beach, Corona Del Mar areas. Nor Cal pretty much most of the bay area covered.

Oh I can't believe I forgot about Bangel BBQ!!! its a little counter service place that serves really good BBQ skewers, there kinda pricey but well worth every penny :) its in Adventureland next to River Belle Terrace.

You asked about snacks, so I HAVE to chime in! Disneyland Churro's ROCK! I'm also all about some fritters and hot chocolate while waiting for Fantasmic to start. :)

Another great treat is a soft serve ice cream place in DCA on Paradise Peir, overlooking the "Take off" point for California Screamin'. :) They have a rather unique way of flavoring it that is AT LEAST worth a peek.

As for the Blue Bayou - Head in for lunch! It's less crowded either day.

I would definately do DCA. You can take your time with it if you do it on Monday. :)

Pretty excited about my trip. Unfortunately, we're really not covering much of southern california, past Hearst Castle, other than DL. Just gives me a reason to come back again. However, we are still debating whether to stop over in Santa Barbara or Solvang on the way down from Hearst Castle on our way to DL. Our castle tour is at 10:30 and should be over by 12:30, but I believe the drive down is close to 6 hours so it doesnt give us much time. We really want to get in that night, walk over to Downtown Disney for a few and get a good nights sleep so we can hit DL early the next morning.

The whole DL churros has me quite curious. I grew up eating churros in Miami and now living in Jersey I get them quite easily at nearby cuban restaurants. But my understanding is that these churros are somewhat different than the cuban version.

And thanks for the CA suggestion, I think I'm going to try my best to squeeze in a few hours of CA each day. Even if it is just enough time to see Aladdin and Monsters Inc. I heard the lines at TSM are crazy so I might just wait for that until my next trip to WDW, unless the single rider line is quick. I doubt I'll get a FP as the return times will probably be too late and/or inconvenient. I really don't want to be traveling back and forth between the 2 parks.

I vote for...

If you want a "California" experience, by all means, check out the beach and Santa Barbara.

If you want a UNIQUE experience - Solvang is my pick! I am (fairly) local and I go up to Solvang once or twice a year. It's crazy to see a dutch town right in the middle of California mountains.

Too bad you're not getting further south! A day at the Wild Animal Park and/or Balboa Park is wonderful (if a little warm) this time of year. Oh well! more for next time!

Well thanks for the vote for Solvang! I'm actually leaning more towards that than Santa Barbara. A co-worker recommended some restaurant in the vicinity that makes a great pea soup. Can't remember the name right now. The good thing about Santa Barbara too (well based on my guide books) is that its a quick drive towards the main part of town where all the sites are located.

Honestly my biggest concern for wanting to get in to Anaheim at a decent hour is so we can walk towards Downtown Disney that night so the following morning we will know exactly where we are heading. One of the earlier posts mentioned that from my hotel to DL I can take a short cut through the Grand Californian. But I recently listened to a podcast where some first time DL visitors were saying how lost they got trying to do that shortcut.

As for beaches, we'll be going to the beach up North. We'll be spending 3 nights at a resort on the beach in Marina, I think its called the Sanctuary Beach Resort. We plan to enjoy the beach there and cruise all around highway 1 and hit some of the beaches from Marina down towards Big Sur. I'm sure the water will be super cold. I just hope it isn't colder than the water here in Jersey. Brrrr

When CA is finished I will definitely return to California and travel through Southern California.
