1995 Snow White Rennovation?

In 1995, they put this ride through a major rehab, changing the name from Snow White's Scary Adventures to just Snow White's Adventures. I know they changed the ending. Did they do anything else, like update the special effects, like they did with the 1983 Fantasyland rehab in California?

Actually the name is still Snow Whites Scary Adventures. They added statics of Snow White because of guest complants that they did not see her in the ride. (This is because originally you were Snow White and you saw everything from her perspective). Also animated Queen in the courtyard was moved and became static. Those are the major changes I know there were others just not sure if they were changed gradually or durring the rehab.

They added Snow White herself...which does not make sense if you are supposed to be Snow White, but maybe they changed that too.

The ending is very different too--its happy. Before you ran into the mine wall and, in cartoon fashion, they did an effect with strobe lights and blinking lights and funky shaped colorful cutouts that looked like a "freak-out...ala in the boat tunnel in the Willy Wonka movie--"What is this, some kind of freak out?!")

I also remember a small mine cart full of gold that quickly, abruptly, and randomly shot out at your ride vehicle.

I was young and absolutely petrified!!

If my memory serves me right, the original load area used to be different.

Currently, the vehicles make two U-turns before entering the main show building. I could be wrong, but I think that the U-turns were added in the upgrade (i.e. the vehicles went straight into the show building)

The first half of the ride was essentially unchanged during the renovation. I'm sure there were some small changes, but they wern't significant.

The second half of the ride (past the dwarf house) was almost completely overhauled. I don't remember much about it, but I do remember that you spent much more time in the dwarf mine. Like
surfsupdon, I also remember the cart that nearly crashed into your vehicle (and it scared me to death as well). I also remember the strobe crash room that finished the ride instead of the "Happily Ever After" scene we have now.

Anyone have more info or maybe photos or video?

Anything is better than the Disneyland version, where the Queen drops the boulder on you, then all of a sudden, Happily Ever After. It makes no sense.

Here there is the transition into the Happy part.

All I remember about the original is being bored stiff... This was Snow White's ride!... Where the heck was Snow White?!

I have been on the ride before and after the changes. I don't remember what is new and what is old. It is kind of blurred together. I do know the load area is different. And if I remember right the new end has a wedding or something, is that correct? I remember in the old one at the end the witch trying to pry a big rock or diamond or something to fall on you. Not sure what happened after that scene. Can any one else remind me of the ending?

Also, the one thing that I was affraid of as a kid was when the aligators which I think looked like logs or logs that looked like aligators came after your boat. I wanted to ride on the right side of the car because the attacked from the left. Does that sound right, or did my party days give me some freaky memories?

Well, DL's version had no room, but if you look, behind the Witch dropping the boulder, a flash of light with the shadow of the queen falling. But, still is cunfusing. I think Digital Disney has a video of the old version. For DL's changes, I think that the old version had boring dolls as the characters and no AAs.

Here's a desciption of it from another message board.

The less scarey version was done in the mid to late 90's. Guests complained that al you saw was the Witch throughout the ride. What people didn't grasp was you were taking the role of Snow White, somewhat. It was all the Witch and a scene with the Dwarfs going after her.

I loved the older version but I can understand parents complaining because it was a ride in Fantasyland and it scared the kids too much.

Here's what I remember of the ride:

The loading area looked like a castle courtyard and part of the surrounding area. A waterfall was on the wall using mylar strips that moved to simulate moving water falling from a mountain. The exit of the ride looked like the Dwarves' diamond mine. The cars are the same as the ones today: look like they are carved out of wood with a Dwarf's name on the front of each one. They have two rows fitting two adults in each row. The car takes off around the wishing well (you also hear Snow White singing the song, "I'm Wishing") and then turns toward the "castle" entrance. There is a window above the entrance that the Evil Queen parts the curtains and stares down at you as you approach. The loading area is pretty much the same as it was before the change.

Once you enter it all becomes very sinister for the rest of the ride. You are in a dark castle chamber. The car moves toward the Wicked Queen. Her back is to you with her arms raised. You see her reflection in the magic mirror in front of you. She says: "Mirror, mirror, on the wall..." Just as you get to her she spins and it's the Wicked Witch who cackles at you.

You travel into the castle dungeon. You see a skeleton in a cell with a huge spider descending on him (I always wondered if this was the same spider they use in the HM). You go by another cell where the skeleton's head is sticking out through the bars. He tells you to "Go Back, go back!" All around are blinking rat eyes. This was so cool because they were everywhere. You ride into another room where a huge cut-out shelf, full of cutout beakers and jars, tilts and you hear crashing glass. You then see the Witch holding an apple over her cauldron. Then through another door and you are in the swamp. There's a dark tunnel to your left that the Witch, in a boat, slides out and says "See the apple?". There are alligators on both sides of the car that move back and forth; but they also look like logs, as well. One of the alligators lunges and follows the car as you pass. Then you weaved back and forth as the creepy trees reached and lunged for you. Another neat effect was after the last tree these eyes floating up from the swamp and dissappearing like more monster rising up to get you. You turn a corner and enter the Dwarves' cottage. You first see all the anthropamorfied [SP?] furniture and woodland critters looking horrified. You turn a corner and see all the Dwarves on the stairs up toward a door. There is a shadow of a ghostly figure projected on the wall right in front of the door. One of the Dwarves, Doc I think, is saying something like "She went this way!" Dopey is at the end of the line holding a candle, looking like he's ready to bolt in the opposite direction. You approach one of those barn doors with only the top half open. The Witch slides into view cackling at you. You turn and leave the cottage. You see a sign pointing to the diamond mine. You enter and a cart full of diamonds rolls at you head-on. You pass by another tunnel and the Witch laughs and it echos as if she's waiting down that path for you. You make another turn and she's standing in front of you pushing a support beam. She says "Enjoy the ride, dearie!" and pushes the beam. Then other beams are tilting and you hear the sounds of creaking beams and rock caving in. You go into another room and the witch is on a ledge above you next to a huge gem. She has a large pole wedged under it and is prying it out to drop on you. As you approach the Witch says "Good-bye, dearie!" and the gem tilts out. You pass under it into a final, tiny room full of strobe lights and explosion shaped lights. You were hit by the gem and this is the result. This effect was one of the other great parts I remember about the ride. Your car then exits out to the unload area.

I know I probably got a few parts wrong but you get the basic idea of it. The Witch was always popping out at you; it was a blast. A classic dark ride with some well known characters and scenes. I was sad to see it go for a "kinder, gentler" version where you actually see Snow White.

Here's someone talking about the Disneyland version.

At Disneyland Paris they still had the replica of the Disneyland original SW ride last spring - and I sincerely wish they would not change it at all, because this Disneyland original has much more better-looking figures than the new ones at WDW. The WDW "remake" has a certain charm in it because of these figures who look almost like they would have been carved from authentic wood (and besides, I always hated the WDW original version of this SW ride, as described in the long post above) - but yet the Disneyland original is the most spellbinding experience because the figures seem almost alive, and the atmosphere is truly more menacing.

I've always said that the DL original SNOW WHITE'S SCARY ADVENTURES is much more scarier than all the Haunted Mansions put together - and I probably surprise every one by saying that EXACTLY AS IT SHOULD BE, since the attraction is only faithful to the original movie, which - let's face it - is NOT exactly a kiddie's movie despite of its genre.

The thing I don't get is this. The ride if I remember correctly was there when the park opened. If not when it opened shortly after anyway. If so why did they keep it for over 20 years before changing it? What, all of a sudden it is not right to make kids brown there trousers? It makes no sense.

As I remember right, they started the rehab after the Summer 1993 re-release of the film and then had it open in time for the video relase the following fall. Plus, they were always getting complaints about getting on the Snow White ride and not seeing Snow White (similar complaints were also made about Disneyland's Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland ride). I actually like the kinder gentler version of the ride much better than the original. It seems more in keeping with the feel of the film and better follows the storyline IMO.

Part of the reason it wasn't changed was because Walt Disney didn't care about the complaints and said something along the lines of "It's good for children to learn about being scared sometimes" or something like that. Marc Davis said the Haunted Mansion was made kind of kooky because Snow White was already scaring the daylights out of little kids and they didn't want something worse.

It's said that Walt wanted one scarey ride (SW), one beautiful ride (PP) and one funny ride (Toad) when he opened Disneyland Fanstasyland in 1955.

For some reason I remember the Queen "dumping" a bolder on the ride vehicles in Florida. It's been a long time ago though. Probably pre-1995.

i would love to see video frm the original version! i was quite young when i rode it... i remember riding with my eyes shut nearly the entire time! i do remember the effect at the end with the strobe lights, etc. i'm not sure why they didn't retain at least a little of that... instead of getting plunged into near complete darkness right after going under the witch with the boulder...
