1956 Film - Aerial view of Disneyland

I think you are combining two noteworthy, and fascinating, stories of Disneyland yore.

Until the 1990's the nearby Marine Corps Air Station Miramar offered a seasonal employee base for Disneyland. Marines based there used to moonlight at Disneyland, and Disneyland was happy to employ them because they were clean cut and knew how to follow the rules. But when they were deployed or PCS'ed out of El Toro, they could often leave their Disneyland schedulers in the lurch in the name of national defense.

Meanwhile at Storybook Land, in David Koenig's Mouse Tales book he spoke of an infamous 1970's Attractions Hostess at Storybook Land that became a favorite of the Marines from El Toro who would go to Disneyland with the cheap tickets available at their base Morale & Welfare office. A gaggle of Marines would wait in line inexplicably to ride Storybook Land Canal Boats, perhaps the most effeminate and wimpy ride in all of Disneyland. The hostesses at Storybook Land would shuffle the queue around to make sure the Marines got a "private boat" with this one specific hostess, who would instantly modify her spiel to suddenly become R rated.

The trip through Storybook Land would being with the Marines enraptured as this hostess started her journey by guiding her boat of Marines into Monstro's gaping mouth. And then the boat would back up again and exit the whale's mouth. Then it would go forward into Monstro's mouth again. Then back up again. Before going all the way back into Monstro's mouth and entering Storybook Land where the versions of classic Walt Disney storybooks she would tell were not quite what Walt had in mind. I think you get the idea.
Yep, you're right.(except maybe El Toro vs Miramar down in San Diego?) I was too lazy to find my Mouse Tails to fact check my memory. Thanks.

It looks like this aerial footage is from the 1956 special "People and Places: Disneyland USA," which is one of the features on the Disneyland: Secrets, Stories, and Magic DVD of the Walt Disney Treasures sets that were released in the 2000s.

Great special, and on that particular DVD set it also has optional commentary by Tony Baxter!

And maybe some day remastered for D+ but they must already have enough content that they don't need to do this.

Perhaps. Eventually they're going to run out of big popular movies that they don't have the streaming rights to yet AND new content for their originals. Seems like that would be a great time to let loose all of that content that's been sitting in the vault and has hardly ever been available.

I was being a little sarcastic to be honest. It's taken this long to get just 2 episodes of Wonderful World of Color on D+ and the second is being released on May 22nd. This episode was remastered and put online with D23 last year so it didn't need anything but server space.

I remember when the main entrance sign used to be on W. Katella middle of the block. The bus drop off was right up to the main entry. All parking lot where DCA now sits. The junior high era, '87-88, family trip staying at the magic lamp, where even the fire works could be seen from the 3rd floor rooms. Having to check in every meal time with mom, to picnic on the left side of the main gate picnic area. Going again with my brothers 15 and 16 respectively. Driving down in his mustang, staying in cheap hotel going to Knotts one day, Disney the next and making a long weekend of it. The Disneyland Hotel, was the coolest place at that age. It was the only place Disney had at the time. Being 21 in '96 going with my best friend and "getting drunk at the happiest place on earth" for his 21st b-day. Used to be able to get the monorail at the Disneyland Hotel, after drinking at the Neon Cactus Bar. '98, going with my future wife. They had a big watch tower set up with a glass etching showing the future skyline of DCA. My first site of Down Town Disney was a company trip in '08, thinking this place is getting cooler. Last trip with Family in '18 finally seeing DCA.
The pre 9/11 days were a time of innocents. I say innocents because I was a chauffeur prior to 9/11, and the idea of heightened security was only something military bases and government facilities only worried about. I used to meet clients at the gate as an added benefit to help client navigate the airport. I miss the days of meeting family at the gate.

Not sure if you have seen these vids yet...they are apparently now allowing some flyovers of Disneyland. Below are recent flyovers of both DL and DCA. His page also has flyovers of other theme parks and landmarks.

TO OUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS

In a matter of days now, Disneyland will open its gates to the world and a new Orange County Tradition will be born.

As this event draws near, I am very mindful of another famous Orange County tradition... Friendliness... the friendliness you have shown us with your thoughtfulness, cooperation and confidence during the building of Disneyland.

To all of you, may we at Disneyland express a sincere and warm "Thank You."

As your new friends and neighbors, we are proud indeed to become part of the Orange County tradition.

Signed - Walt Disney<<
