Loose Bolt Prompts Thrill Ride Inspection

<!--startindex-->ORLANDO, Fla. -- About 170 passengers riding the indoor roller coaster "Revenge of the Mummy" became stuck Wednesday night when Universal Studios theme park workers stopped the ride over a bolt found by a passenger.

Officials at the park said the ride was nearly completed when a passenger found a loose bolt in or near one of the seats.

A worker immediately stopped the ride as a precaution and security helped remove the passengers.

Universal inspected the ride Wednesday night and decided to reopen it to the public after no other problems were found. The attraction was closed to tourists for 30 to 45 minutes.

Officials said the bolt found in one on the seats apparently came from the padding in one of the seats.

There were no injuries in connection with the incident.

Officials said someone on the ride used a cell phone to call the Orlando fire department but the dispatched unit was canceled before arriving to the theme park.

Riders on the "Revenge of the Mummy" plunge into darkness at speeds up to 45 mph during the thrill attraction.

Revenge of the Mummy the Ride is located in an area themed after New York City.

Its good to see that they took the precaution of stopping the ride. Even though the bolt just turned out to be from the seat, it was good practice in safety to make the call to stop the ride just in case. Even though it probably inconvenienced some of the guests, safety always comes before everything else.

Its a rediculous thing to put in the news though. I like how they hid the part about the bolt being from one of the seats halfway through the article. Pretty sleazy.

It was a VERY SLOW news night. The CBS station lead with the story and they were live right outside Universal. I have been in the news business for about 10 years and I can't stand Orlando news and their sensationalism. It's flat out crazy.

It's good to see that the Universal employee cared to do something and didn't blow it off like some would. Kudos to that employee! Someone at Universal give them a free movie ticket!

I'm suprised nobody posted the whole "OMG! The news is so mean to Universal! Why even post this article?!" like everyone does when an article like this comes out about Disney...

Kudos to the TM as well! Now there's a Winning Momment!

Unfortunately evacuating an attraction due to this kind of circumstance is fairly common. Safety above everything else. It's no longer fun if someone gets hurt.

I know nothing about this ride, so bear with me...

How would an operator on the ride even know a passenger had found a bolt during the ride? If it's a high-speed indoor roller coaster - how would a passenger let anyone know?

Same question, posed two different ways :p

It appears that guest A found the bolt, then called 911, 911 then notified the the park, who then notified the ride operator. Said ride operator E-Stops the ride trapping guest A and everyone else on the attraction.

The wonders of technology. :lookaroun

Close--

Guest gets off the ride, tells attendant that she found a bolt and then hands it to him. Attendant E-Stops, trapping remaining guests. One of the remaining guests calls 911.

Unfortunately that's about all I am able to explain about the situation (because that was all in plain view of guests).
