10day Magical Trip at Port Orleans Riverside Royal Room & Discovery Cove (3/28-4/6)

I've been a long time reader of the forums and I don't post much but considering how much enjoyment I get out of reading everybody's amazing TRs (seriously, some of you are master story tellers :) ), I figured I should pay it forward and share our recent WDW vacation this past Spring Break. So, this is my very first TR so please bear with me if my report seems a bit hard to follow and lacks cohesion.

This was our 3rd trip to WDW and 1st trip for our DD6. Living in Seattle, which is about as far as you can be from WDW, we don’t get the opportunity to get to WDW as often as we’d like considering that Disneyland is only 2 ½ hours away by flight. Our last trip to WDW was back in 2004 before our DD was born when hurricane Charley, a category 4 hurricane went through Orlando at the end of our trip. We were one of the very few lucky people where we were able to rebook our flight out of West Palm Beach (as Orlando Airport was shut down) and secure transportation down to West Palm Beach.

DW: Deona | DD6: Madelyn | ME: Danny

Our WDW trip was a surprise trip for our DD which included a 10day stay at Port Orleans Riverside in the new Royal rooms with a day at Discovery Cove to swim with the dolphins.
Our planning for this trip started back in July of 2011 and we had a few close calls and slip ups but fortunately we were able to keep it a secret until the day we were leaving for the airport for a red-eye flight out of Seattle to Orlando, arriving at POR at 9:30am.

Before we begin our Trip Report, I wanted to share some general comments regarding our trip.

The “Left Rule”:
I remember reading somewhere that when you enter Magic Kingdom at rope drop and look down Mainstreet toward Cinderella’s castle, you’ll notice that more people are walking on the right side of the street than the left side of the street and they called that the “Left Rule”. Meaning that for whatever reason, people at WDW tend to favor right side over the left side. This was absolutely true during our trip where lines on the left side were usually less busy than lines on the right side whether it’s the ride lines, FP ticket lines, or food queue lines.

Speaking of FP ticket lines, here was an interesting observation. I’ve never noticed this before but it was a very common sight during this trip especially on the popular & busy rides where there would be a group of people that would have 1 person wait in each of the FP ticket lines and whoever got to the FP dispenser the quickest, all the others would join that person (I think they were part of a tourist group) with each having a stack of tickets in hand for the FP tickets. This really didn’t bother me at all but it noticeably bothered a few others in the FP distribution lines. I had more fun trying to pick them out in the FP lines and watching for other people’s reactions.

Weather:
The weather was simply AMAZING the entire duration of our trip. Average temperature was in the upper 70s when we arrived, gradually increasing to 90 degrees by the end of our trip with no noticeable humidity that we’re used to during the summer months. We did have 1 thunder & lightning storm on the day of our Discovery Cove excursion. They actually had to close Discovery Cove until the lightning storm passed. It was the typical torrential downpour that you experience during the summer months and then clearing out after a few hours.

Free WiFi:
There was free WiFi at the POR property (with pretty good signal at our room) and for those that care, this was what I logged on the average internet speed:
1Mbit download | 0.20 Mbit upload

Dining Plan:
This was the first time we used a Dining Plan through the free-dining-promo and I would have to say that this is a great plan for people that want a low stress dining experience without having to worry about the individual cost of the food items. It was very nice having your meals pre-paid and being able to enjoy any entrée/ dessert/ drink that you wanted rather than deciding what you’re going to eat based on the cost of the food items. While the Dining Plan is not for everybody, we will definitely add the Dining Plan to our future WDW vacations. Based on our eating habits when we’re on vacation, we most likely would have spent about the same amount on meals & snacks. Just the convenience of not having to worry about the cost of the food while on vacation and being able to order just about anything on the menu is a good trade off and worth it for us.

Most Expensive Counter Service Meal: $45 (lunch) – Sunshine Seasons @ EPCOT
Least Expensive Counter Service Meal: $22 (breakfast) – Riverside Mill Food Court @ POR

Most Expensive Table Service Meal: $130 (dinner) – Princess Storybook Dining at Akurshus @ EPCOT
Least Expensive Table Service Meal: $87 (breakfast) – The Crystal Palace @ Magic Kingdom

Total cost of Snacks, Counter & Table Service Meals (including gratuity): $1360
Breakfast meals by far were the cheapest so if you’re looking for the best bang for the buck on your meal credits, I would recommend using your Meal credits on Lunch or Dinners and using your Snack credits on breakfast.

Now onto the TRIP REPORT !!!

Wow you guys took Animal Kingdom by storm! The picture of you guys on DINOSAUR is fantastic! Haha!
OMG! Those pictures and your story of that boy in the wheelchair made me tear up.... Such a precious moment and so true what you said about how it really gave you a new perspective of your trip.
Can't wait to read about your family's day at EPCOT! :D

Lol. That is a great picture...I love your face but all the other faces of the people in your car was perfect. That little boy sitting in the middle looks petrified.
Haha. I love it when the ride pictures turn out good, especially when everybody has great expressions which doesn’t happen very often.

I'm following along, though slacking on commenting!
Beautiful family, and fantastic pictures.
You really "did" Animal Kingdom justice on your day there!
We stayed at POR in December '11, though not in the fantastic new rooms. Now we have to go back!
It was definitely a long day after having a couple of slower days. I’ve heard people say Animal Kingdom is not a full day park but we could have easily done another half day there. I would have loved to try out Flame Tree BBQ (which I’ve heard was really good!) and Character Breakfast at the Tusker House.

OMg I am loving your report, and your facial expressions are priceless.I so badly want to do Discovery Cove
It was definitely an amazing and unique experience from the moment you step onto the Discovery Cove property. You have to put that on your “bucket list” of to do’s!!

Your face on Dinosaur was absolutely great. My daughter and I had a good laugh. I have to keep going back and looking because it's just so priceless!!
This picture was definitely purchase worthy and I’m glad we got it. Good to hear others are enjoying it too! :)

Thanks! EPCOT definitely is one of my favorite parks and even though we did about 2 days worth of EPCOT we still missed out on a lot of attractions there and SOOOO many different places to eat that we never got to try out. And lunch at LeCellier was well…. Oh wait. I’m getting ahead of my TR. You’re just going to have to wait for the next TR update.
And it looks like you have a WDW trip coming up! I hope you have an amazing trip!

So I literally just spit my water out at my desk and laughed outloud at your Dinosaur picture. HAHAHAHA. Dinosaur produces some of the BEST photos!! Seriously. Some people look like they're going to die from fright!!

Such a touching story about the boy in the wheelchair. I work with some children from Make-A-Wish and a lot of them choose to go to Disney so it's stories like this that really touch my heart. Things we take for granted like a silly meet and greet are such huge things for these children.

You guys rocked AK! I agree with the Nemo show. Saw it for the first time last month and LOVED it! Also loved Flights of Wonder.

Glad I could add so much enjoyment ;)
It was definitely one of the more touching and memorable moments of the trip by far!
AK is kind of a tough park to experience in 1 day but I don't think it's really a "more than 1 day" park either, so you really have to power through it if you want to see all that AK has to offer.

It’s been awhile since my last update as I’ve had a lot going on the past few weeks with Madelyn’s school, Kindergarten graduation, hosting family for visit, start of summer vacation and I got a new computer so I had to deal with all the setup and configuration and copying all my pictures and files onto my new computer.

And what's the deal with the new layout??

Day 7 (Tuesday): It’s ALL About The Duffy and The Unintentional Rope Drop
Logged 8.72 miles on the Pedometer (20,501 steps) for the day.

We’ve had a string of amazing weather and today continues to be another scorcher of a day as it’s forecasted to be in the 90s. Our agenda for the day was to get to EPCOT pretty close to rope drop but not actually make the rope drop as we heard EPCOT really didn’t have a rope drop show. We were going to finish up Future World (since we spent a few hours there on our arrival day), ADR at LeCellier and then start on World Showcase, starting at Canada in a counterclockwise direction. We were going to finish up World Showcase tomorrow as we had ADR for dinner to Princess Storybook Dining at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall at Norway.

Our wakeup call was at 7:15am and we made our way to the bus stop and got on a full bus shortly before 8am. This was perfect as we would have missed the initial rush of people by the time we arrived at EPCOT. As we made our way to the entrance, I started getting worried as we saw lines of people crowding up all the way out to the monorail station…

IMG_5624.jpg

Well… It just turns out that rope drop for this particular day was 9am instead of 8am.
So, this turned out to be our first and only rope drop of our vacation.

Pretty much the extent of the EPCOT rope drop show.
IMG_5626.jpg

…and made our way through the gates and marveled EPCOT’s amazing icon.

Test track had eluded us in our past two trips to WDW due to hurricanes so we have never ridden TT before. On our last trip, they had actually shut down the ride as we were the next person in line to get in the car. Determined to not get foiled by any reason at all, we headed left straight toward TT. I made a slightly detour to grab FPs to Mission: Space while the girls got in line for TT.

Fortunately, TT was a walk on and we were finally able to cross TT off our list after 3 trips to WDW.

IMG_5638.jpg

After TT, we headed over to Mission: Space to turn in our FPs.

We walked onto Ellen’s Energy Adventure before making our way to grab FPs to Soarin.
IMG_5693.jpg

I remembered how busy Soarin was when we were having lunch at Sunshine Seasons on Day 1, so we decided to split up while I ran to get FPs to Soarin and the girls got in line to get pictures with Mickey and his pals.

As I made my way down to the Soarin FP distribution machines, the lines I saw were the worst I had ever seen on any DisneyWorld or Disneyland ride. As I stood in line waiting, I could literally see the FP times increasing by 5 minutes for every 1 minute of waiting. When I arrived, the FP times were already at 1:15pm and by the time I left, our FP times were for 1:55pm and this was like at 10:00 in the morning!

I met up with the girls and they were almost to the front of the line for character photos. Great timing!
For those hot days, this character photo opportunity is a great way to cool down and relax as the waiting lines are indoors and air conditioned.

Soon enough, we were in line to meet Duffy! Thankfully, the waiting line and Duffy was all under a shade as the temperature was in the upper 80s by 11am.

While we were waiting in line, I struck up an interesting conversation with Duffy’s “handler” and it turns out that she was there through the Disney’s college program till August. She was telling us how much fun she was having and what an incredible experience it was for her. They matched her up to be a character handler because her major was in child psychology and so she gets to work at WDW, be around kids, earn college credits AND get paid all at the same time. What an amazing opportunity. I wish I had known about this program when I was in college.

Afterwards, we headed toward Canada pavilion as our ADR to LeCellier was getting close.
IMG_5756.jpg

IMG_5757.jpg

IMG_5760.jpg

We walked into LeCellier and were seated promptly.

IMG_5761.jpg

IMG_5762.jpg

I really liked LeCellier’s wine cellar décor. The restaurant was dim but had a really nice and warm and had a familiar feel to it like as if I was going back to one of my favorite restaurants that I frequent back home. Having heard so much about it and drooled over their menu over the past few months, I had pretty high expectations of LeCellier. To me, this was the ONE restaurant that I HAD to dine during my WDW vacation.
IMG_5768.jpg

Lunch at LeCellier came to $97 and it met my expectations of a steak restaurant. I ordered the New York Strip Steak topped with butter served with cream cheese mashed potatoes, DW had the Sauteed Potato Gnocchi with roasted tomatoes, summer vegetables, basil pesto and parmesan. Madelyn had Hot Dog, carrots, and ice cream.

My steak was flavorful (as was expected with NY steaks) and had good char marks. I was a little disappointed with my steak as I had asked for rare and got medium to medium well. (I typically ask for steak temperature one grade lower at steak restaurants I’ve never been to before as I would rather get steak that’s slightly undercooked rather than slightly overcooked).
IMG_5775.jpg

DW’s gnocchi was very tasty with it being more “doughy” (which is what we prefer) rather than “bready” like dense biscuits.

IMG_5781.jpg

However, I would have to say that the star of the meal was their pretzel bread (I know… call me crazy!!). The pretzel bread was soft and warm like a freshly made pretzel and we ended up extra orders of the pretzel rolls.
IMG_5771.jpg

For dessert, I had the Chocolate on Chocolate Whiskey Cake and DW had the Maple Crème Brulee.

The standby time for Soarin at 2pm. Are people actually waiting 2 ½ hours to ride one ride!?

IMG_5801.jpg

After Soarin, we headed back out to World Showcase continuing with United Kingdom, France, Morocco and stopping at Japan, saving the remainder of World Showcase for tomorrow as we’d be back to EPCOT since we had dinner ADR at the Norway Pavilion for Princess Storybook Dining at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall.

For a quick snack break (and to cool down), we stopped at the France Pavilion’s Boulangerie Patisserie for some Napoleon and Toasted Ham & Cheese bread and an extra large lemonade.

The Napoleon was probably one of the best pastries I had the entire trip!

Pinky out! Madelyn practicing her drinking manners for dinner w/ the princesses tomorrow.
IMG_5858.jpg

Becoming quite the Duffy fan, Madelyn started collecting Duffy pennies at each of the Pavilions around World Showcase. Unfortunately, the Duffy penny machine at France was broken and Morocco didn’t have a Duffy penny machine.

We made it all the way to Japan before fatigue really started to settle in. The 90+ degree temperature certainly wears you down if you’re not setting aside adequate times for breaks and we had been going since 7:15 in the morning.

Sun was starting to set so we took some more pictures as we made our way out of EPCOT.
Photo0222FourBySix.jpg

Photo0241FourBySix.jpg

We were definitely becoming a Duffy fan so Madelyn got to choose a Duffy with 3 outfits: a pirate outfit, a sorcerer outfit, and the sailor outfit.

Madelyn was only going to get one Duffy outfit but of course Disney had their “special promotion” where if you bought 2 outfits, you'd get the third free so we had no choice but to buy 2 outfits so that we can get the third for free. Don’t you just love how Disney makes you spend more money by making you feel like you’re getting a special deal?
IMG_5925.jpg

We were still not quite hungry for a full dinner since we essentially were snacking our way through EPCOT, so we decided to have a light dinner with salads, fruits and drinks and bringing them back to our room to rest our tired feet and retire for the night.

Next up: Day 8: Time to Shop till we drop and our first fireworks show

Really enjoying your trip report. Hope you were able to see Illuminations the second EPCOT day of your trip. My family probably thinks I'm crazy, but I can't deny the goosebumps when the torches are first extinguished. Truly a magical moment for me. Oh, and I agree the Napoleon is extremely tasty!

Great trip report!

I think you sold me on buying a pedometer before my 11 day October trip. I would love to see how far we walk.

Can't wait for the rest! :)

What a fantastic TR and beautiful pics!

We have always stayed at the Poly because we are a family of 5. If it is the kids and I next year, I may have to have my 2 boys deal with the Royal room for their little sis and me. :)

What a great TR. Your daughter is absolutely adorable.
The royal rooms at POR look fantastic; it is on my list to stay at either POR or POFQ.
I also love the letters you had everyday. Definitely very creative.
